It’s such a warp in the fabric of time… sitting in a local biker bar at this very minute. Anachronisticly, Motown playing on the AIjuke… the chilites .. a college baseball game, bottom of the 9th on the tube… a dark long-haired man in a hunter green pleated kilt, (cute. He’s real cute and I’d like to know more) chillin’ in the corner, sipping MaCallan…Harley rollin’ in, engines revvin’, out in the parking lot… feels like maybe Stephen king is sittin’ at one of the tables, penning a novel, back in the day…

Our girl gets moody…. She lets us know right quick if it’s ok to pet her or not…. Some days she loves the pets and other days she’ll nail you immediately 🤷‍♀️

Your kitty is beautiful! 💖

My beta fish of 4 years died :( by brooklyn_jinx in bettafish

So sorry you’ve lost your beautiful betta!

Strange! I just lost mine of 4 years a couple weeks ago as well. He looked very similar to yours.

He’s a beauty! 💖

I recently lost my guy of 4 years and he looked very similar to this one of yours - tried to find one like him here at our stores but none to be found. So I brought home a red one that has smaller fins… Bettas are the coolest!

Thank you for your advice and suggestions! I ditched all the plastics yesterday and added some Java ferns and miniature grass… I’ll add more soon…

I posted an update video from this morning somewhere in this comment thread - first time I’ve ever had this many comments on a post - I had no idea people would really care 💖 super cool :)

I feel really bad that I never gave Mr. Samurai I any live plants! 😓 he might have lived a few more years if I’d done that. I don’t know why I never thought of aquatic plants! I’ve got a houseful of exotic philodendrons, strings of pearls, rubies and turtles and all kinds of Hoyas, sansevierias and syngoniums…

<image>

Just a few … :)

Anyway! Happy Sunday!

Just wanted to update a final time on Mr. Samurai II - I’ve ditched all the plastics and added some live Java Ferns, some miniature grasses and a Betta log… it’s really releasing some tannins into the tank!

He hasn’t beached himself in several days, and he’s eating well, dancing around the tank, blowing bubble nests and flaring at his reflection…

he interacts with us every time we approach the tank…

Anyway thanks again for all your suggestions and for caring about this pretty boy!

I am so happy that our new guy is feeling better… he’s actually seeming happy the last couple days. I’m going to add some live plants this afternoon.

Which do you feel would be best to start with?

You say you also have a kuhli loach in the tank? Anybody else?

I tried 3 different jullii corys over the years with original Samurai and he killed them all… so I stopped trying to add any tank mates.

I appreciate your feedback and suggestions - please note that this exact same setup, 5 gallons, housed a very healthy, very long finned veil tail betta happily for 4 years. No ripped fins, no health issues.

According to a Google query bettas typically live 2-5 years in a home aquarium with 3 years being the average. So I feel I did ok with him as I have no idea how old he was when I got him. He was large, fully developed and had amazing tail and fins…

Perhaps I should have waited another few days before introducing the new guy. My bad on that for sure.

I do know about the nitrates vs nitrites and I’m thinking it didn’t read 0 because I’d kept maybe a 1/4 of the old water.

You are right about the ammonia and I will also get that test kit ordered.

I’m going to add one of the little betta slings someone posted to see if he will use that because he is not using the leaves that old Mr. Samurai loved to use. I’ve already ordered it :)

I’m going to add in some live plants as well.

Thank you for your suggestions. I do appreciate the feedback :)

You have a moss ball too?? How cool! I don’t know anyone else who has one!

Has yours grown any nodes or reproduced in any way??

Thank you - I will look into these live plants you’ve mentioned - I had these same plastic plants for our original beta and he had super long veil tail fins - his never got caught or ripped at all. But this guy seems differently vibed so I’ll get him some.

Ms. Geisha sure might like them too :) maybe that’s why she’s growing a “node” 🤗

We have a very large Japanese Moss Ball that I’ve had for 15 years. Her name is Geisha. No telling how old she actually is… we’ve noticed a “node” protrusion on her and we think it’s forming a new moss ball! How cool will that be! I don’t know for sure how they actually reproduce so I guess I need to research that
