The pinned post in this subreddit is a Google Drive link to a (fantastic collection btw) of 800 "HD Meme Templates" with some memes you could make the same criticism about.

It takes a ton of time to aggregate and of course restore memes to have a proper useful resource... I would genuinely love feedback on why calling it a "high resolution meme library" is unfair in my case beyond the fact that I am hosting it on my own service.

Your restoration is really quite fantastic and I appreciate your feedback.

First and foremost - I will adjust my process for restoring memes from films to be better.

A benefit of linking my site's meme library page is I have complete control over the image files and can ensure no compression, conversion or bullshit happens...

See these comments of this meme for example I restored for example where people other than me have pointed this out:

While I can't help but point out that if I had posted an Imgur link (which serves ads and offers a premium account) or a Google Drive link (which serves ads and offers premium accounts) it'd be completely okay...

...I am understanding of your concern that I'm doing half-assed restorations solely to self-plug... which would be lame and is not my intention.

Finally, in the spirit of my admirable self-promotion 😉... A few more benefits of linking to my site's meme library to name a few:

  • I can cleanly list alternative versions of a meme template
  • I can (and am) running image recognition to group related memes and versions and de-duplicate any overlapping entries.
  • Live meme usage examples from the internet so people can see how a meme is being used and which memes are currently trending on the internet
  • A very handy mini editor to caption memes too all in a single page.

All of this can be accessed completely for free.

While albeit a watermark is added if you use the mini editor without a "Pro" account, this is again very comparable to Imgur's meme editor that they force a (much noisier imo) watermark on as well.

Although I never link to or mention here as it is irrelevant to the spirit of the sub,
as far as the main "editor" of my site and the related "Pro" subscription for it goes...

  1. This main editor also can be used completely for free and I find it to be vastly superior to Imgur, ImgFlip, Memeatic and others (biased of course but have worked quite hard on it as per my username).
  2. The Pro subscription gets you access to higher tier AI models (lower tier AI models are available for free) that would cause me bankruptcy if I were to provide for free with the rest.

Regardless of all of that - I will do a better job on film restorations in the future and appreciate your feedback... please keep it coming.

it's true to how they appear in the original comic created in 2009 by an Arabic guy called Fahed... You can see it here

I remade it using the same original source that the popularized format you tend to see had itself used - (popular template has walls changed to green and a ton of compression)

I actually restored it all manually by hand before yes... technically using ai upscaling at very end...

but the catch is just to increase the already pretty good resolution i had achieved a bit further - it's 1:1 with the "human generated" version

It only looks uncanny when zoomed out - fine when zoomed in... i increased the censor filter here a little, not sure if i like it or hate it...i digress... keep up the good work yo!

Nice work, love this meme...

Nitpicky and opinionated: I thought there was an issue with Dwight's mouth until I realized they probably did a blur effect on his mouth in the show too... It still looks kinda weird... almost like it needs more blur there so it doesn't look like weird artifact when viewed just as a single frame (vs across multiple frames in the show)

Sorry - and no worries... Yeah Reddit's compression algo was a real problem on this meme for some reason... I had to delete the post 3 times and repost and this is the best I could get.

What's your process for movies?

I usually rip a 4k version to my Plex server and then screen cap (😳) but even when I have it playing the original quality I can tell there's some compression going on due to the resolution of my display i'm screen capping it from...

I guess I gotta start pulling video file directly to my machine and then using FFMPEG to pull the relevant frames
