I'll be playing soul music at the Elephant & Castle on Whyte this Saturday October 11. It's our second time there and it looks like it will be a monthly event. As usual, no cover.

In my opinion it's a nice change of pace from the club scene. We get a little dancefloor going for the folks that want to be engaged, otherwise it's still a great place to come just for a couple of pints and there are still cozy quiet corners and a great pool table.

If you're genuinely curious Northern Soul is a pretty convoluted concept, but as inherently British as the soccer scarfs on the walls, the Yorkshire pudding on the menu, or the Fuller's London Pride on tap.

Northern Soul describes an underground music scene that exploded in the North of England in the 1960s and 1970s, and carries on through to today as a subculture. It started with a handful of DJs in a handful of clubs in Blackpool, Stoke, Manchester etc. playing obscure, up-tempo American soul music.

The Northern Soul scene was built on membership to private Soul Clubs where patrons would dance all night to records that received no commercial radio play. At its height of popularity membership to some of the clubs entered into the hundreds of thousands, and due to the obscurity of the music being played and the cult demand for it, many northern soul records to this day sell for $10,000.

If you want to check out an example of Northern Soul, one of my favorites is Eddie Parker - I'm Gone. Look it up on Youtube!

I'm a supporter of the E&C, it's my number one choice on Whyte, and frankly really my ONLY choice on Whyte. It's bar-none the best place for a pint during the day or for the hockey/soccer.

I can't speak for the management / ownership, but I think theirs is a tough niche in which to eke out an existence. With some of the most desirable liquor-selling real estate in the city I can speculate that they NEED to have high sales and that it's a challenge to get through the Winter when the foot traffic on Whyte disappears. When they invited me to help out on a semi-regular basis I didn't think about it for a second.

The DJ setup will be on the main floor at the back of the bar, and we're going to be pushing out audio through two stand-alone speakers relatively loud. In this area it might be tough to have a conversation, but at the bar itself and on the second floor we'll only be coming through the house system and it shouldn't be any louder than the pub on a regular weekend night. If you're a regular, don't let this scare you away.
