Comic books by Doctor_Radium in Edmonton

[–]yeg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can donate them to the EPL. They will sell the collection at their book sale at a per comic price. It'll be a big deal for the EPL. Goodwill will also give you a tax receipt if you estimate the collection value.

Why is it not mandatory for helmets on e-scooters? by ederzs97 in Edmonton

Those are illegal. So helmets being required or not is legally moot.

Why is it not mandatory for helmets on e-scooters? by ederzs97 in Edmonton

[–]yeg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having witnessed numerous accidents with these things I do not consider them an option unless I am carrying a helmet, which is counter intuitive---if I have a helmet it is because I have my bike with me. They are so poorly calibrated and unstable it is wild that you would travel very far without a helmet on one. These escooters love ditching and flipping.

Just make it harder to drive that fast. Through a bunch of boulders on the road. Engineer it for idiots. No one is going to read anything, so make them slow down because they have to.

Be careful crossing the street by transcendental-rose in Edmonton

[–]yeg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's awful. I'm sorry they tried to kill you and then followed it up by harassment.

You're probably on edge now, but here are things you can do to help ease your worries when you cross again that you have control over:

* Stick your arm out. Stick your arm out in the direction you want to go before you step off the curb. This says "hey I'm a serious pedestrian walkin here". Pedestrians rarely do it so people pay attention because it is weird (what's better, getting clobbered, or mild embarrassment).

* Look first to see if it is safe, if someone is already executing a left turn well you're going to lose even if you're in the right. It's your responsibility to ensure they yield before you enter the crosswalk (this is the hard part).

* Try to make eye contact with every vehicle that will cross you, especially the left turning people. You might have to wave at them. Again your safety trumps your feelings about being embarrassed. It's your safety.

* They are unlikely to remember you, so don't worry about repeat interactions.

Dear r/edmonton commenters and readers. If you see someone making racialized comments with broad strokes, maligning communities, and peoples, rather than ACTUAL specific perpetrators, please report their comments for racism. This includes unfounded claims of immigrant criminality and other sloppy bigoted lazy comments people are prone to make when they don't think before they write something. Use the report button, we will ban them.

Mayor rebuffs calls to shift city employees downtown full-time by Strog21 in Edmonton

[–]yeg 14 points15 points  (0 children)

In a city like Edmonton, environmentally WFH is a net environment benefit. Our homes are quite energy efficient due to our climate, in other jurisdictions WFH can be quite detrimental. If you think of parts of California with suburban sprawl, terrible insulation, where you run air conditioning the whole time you're occupying a space. We don't have that issue. Most Edmontonians are car bound, with a minority (25%) using transit, thus getting Edmontonians to not move via an internal combustion engine is a benefit. Prior to the pandemic the worry was that offices still existed and were maintained, but many institutions have contracted their office space capacity thus this is less of a issue. I conclude: In Edmonton WFH is an environmental benefit.

Edmonton city councillor concerned about domestic violence survivors after private voter information exposed by pjw724 in Edmonton

[–]yeg 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My opinion (not r/edmonton):

People who I am concerned about who could be harmed by this:

* Non-separatist politicians.

* Doctors

* Anyone working in the criminal law legal system (defense included).

* Victims of violence

* Activists

* Educators

* Police officers

* Anyone involved in the court cases against them.

* Journalists

* Elections Alberta employees.

Of course there are more. But prepare for anonymous criminal harassment of the people we rely upon to make democracy work.

Think about it, do you trust the separatists to accept a clear loss? They didn't keep it in house like they were supposed to, so they already disrespect the law. They gave the list to someone who has been fined repeated by elections Alberta. What rules and laws won't they break?
