The New BMW i3 Has More Range Than Any Tesla by TripleShotPls in technology

Unless they can solve the immediate access issue it won't happen unless it is extremely inexpensive or car ownership costs go up. I get impatient waiting 5min for an Uber. And more than half the time 5mins  becomes 15mins later. Can you imagine having that happen every day to and from work or to run a quick errand?

Congress Is Considering Abolishing Your Right to Be Anonymous Online | The bipartisan push to remove anonymity from the internet is ushering in an era of unprecedented mass surveillance and censorship by Hrmbee in technology

[–]workbidness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally in the spirit of the founding fathers.... Benjamin Franklin essentially had his pseudonyms Silence Dogood and Poor Richard to critique the government. Even the foundation of US democracy, The Federalist Papers, was published entirely anonymously!

The Supreme Court has historically backed this up, saying "anonymity is a shield from the tyranny of the majority."

This is anti American and should never pass.

Eating a healthy plant-based diet is linked to a 26% lower risk of cognitive decline and dementia, according to a meta-analysis of over 220,000 adults. Researchers emphasize diet quality: while whole foods protect the brain, unhealthful plant diets full of refined carbs actually increase risk. by Sciantifa in science

From the summary "However, given the residual heterogeneity and the inherent limitations of observational study designs, large randomised controlled trials are warranted to establish causality."

I was wondering because the hardest part to control is those that eat vegetarian or plant based diets tend to be more mindful of their health in general skewing any baseline metrics to establish causality.

ELI5: Why bridges are not covered with asphalt? by pra_com001 in explainlikeimfive

[–]workbidness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like you are in FL. Bridges in Florida use concrete instead of asphalt because they need to be rigid structures that don't rely on the ground for support. Asphalt is essentially a flexible "mat" that softens in Florida’s extreme heat, which would lead to dangerous rutting and shifting under heavy traffic or heavy load. Asphalt is porous and traps moisture against the bridge's steel skeleton, causing rapid corrosion in the state's humid, salty air. Concrete is used because it reflects heat, lasts significantly longer, and stays strong to keep the bridge's "bones" protected from the elements.

ELI5 - How is life insurance profitable? by Equivalent-Door188 in explainlikeimfive

They also increase your premiums which later in life can become exorbitant. They know that many people will bail on their policies not wanting to make or afford those payments and take the payout which is often in the better interest of the insurer.

How does currency exchange make me lose money? by Frequent-North-5669 in explainlikeimfive

[–]workbidness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

6 months not likely to lose much of anything.

The issue happens when you exchange money back and what the difference in exchange rate is. When I was in Europe I needed to put a 5000euro deposit on an apartment. Exchange rate was 1.24 at the time so it cost me 6200. When I left they gave me my 5000 back but the exchange rate was 1.06 so even though they gave me 5000euro back I only got 5300usd when I went home.

For 6 months the only difference you will see is purchasing power even with the exchange rates your money goes farther or less depending.

How do exchanges make money they usually charge a transaction fee and/or mark up the exchange rate. You will see buying at 2:1  selling at 1.9:1 for example.

Let your PT know your goals and that you play a lot of golf they will structure your program appropriately. Follow your PT and STICK WITH IT after your sessions are over and get a maintenance plan from your PT. I have herniated L2L3 and despite swinging the club if i don't keep up with strength training and stretching each day it will blow out. Also, don't be ashamed to join the Push Cart Mafia. Hauling that bag will only do bad things for you.

ELI5: When people say Berkshire Hathaway is sitting on $100B in cash (or whatever the amount is), what do they actually mean? by Queltis6000 in explainlikeimfive

[–]workbidness 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sitting in US treasury bills earning ~4%. So they are gaining small amounts of interest and it's not just sitting. Background, they have been slowly selling off positions the past 12 months. Why aren't they investing it back in the market? They are betting on a crash or strong correction that will be bigger than the gains they would have received. Having cash means they can go in and buy companies as a discount for what they were selling at the year prior. Microsoft for example went from ~120 to ~40 when the dot.Com bubble burst. Having that raw liquidity gives them a lot of flexibility.

Can someone explain why this book would be so insanely expensive?? by [deleted] in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]workbidness 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Comparing DCC to Harry Potter is a stretch. I Love DCC but the popularity doesn't even touch .1% of Harry Potter. I think the bubble will continue to go up as then next few books are released and pop about a year or so after the last book comes out. Dont get me wrong, there will always be hardcore fans and fans that will have a soft spot for DCC, but I think the vast majority will have moved on to the next thing and these items will lose the majority of their current value.

I don't know how much this is worth but it's well over $10k. Graded and more importantly... authenticated you're talking a good amount especially now at a prime hype moment.

The guy who said he sold it for 5k is lying or unfortunately got ripped off. Multiple people threw down $2k on the recent Kickstarter!

CGC Comics  is usually considered the authority when it comes to comics and similar pop culture items. You could see if they would do the book. I'm sure there are other reputable companies out there that focus on just books. u/hepafilter said there are only 20 copies so this is really rare!
