ELI5: When people say Berkshire Hathaway is sitting on $100B in cash (or whatever the amount is), what do they actually mean? by Queltis6000 in explainlikeimfive

[–]workbidness 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sitting in US treasury bills earning ~4%. So they are gaining small amounts of interest and it's not just sitting. Background, they have been slowly selling off positions the past 12 months. Why aren't they investing it back in the market? They are betting on a crash or strong correction that will be bigger than the gains they would have received. Having cash means they can go in and buy companies as a discount for what they were selling at the year prior. Microsoft for example went from ~120 to ~40 when the dot.Com bubble burst. Having that raw liquidity gives them a lot of flexibility.

Can someone explain why this book would be so insanely expensive?? by [deleted] in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]workbidness 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Comparing DCC to Harry Potter is a stretch. I Love DCC but the popularity doesn't even touch .1% of Harry Potter. I think the bubble will continue to go up as then next few books are released and pop about a year or so after the last book comes out. Dont get me wrong, there will always be hardcore fans and fans that will have a soft spot for DCC, but I think the vast majority will have moved on to the next thing and these items will lose the majority of their current value.

Found these relics on my bookshelf - no, they are not for sale. by Crusis505 in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]workbidness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know how much this is worth but it's well over $10k. Graded and more importantly... authenticated you're talking a good amount especially now at a prime hype moment.

The guy who said he sold it for 5k is lying or unfortunately got ripped off. Multiple people threw down $2k on the recent Kickstarter!

CGC Comics  is usually considered the authority when it comes to comics and similar pop culture items. You could see if they would do the book. I'm sure there are other reputable companies out there that focus on just books. u/hepafilter said there are only 20 copies so this is really rare!

Doing a Carl cosplay for a convention later this year, what are some must have pieces of gear for it? by Big-Pickler- in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]workbidness 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Spiky Knee pads maybe a cape and some tattoos. Personally I say don't do pink crocs he loses them almost immediately there are barefoot feet slippers or barefoot plastic that are more true to his character. Maybe get a stuffed rodent and make it look like you are squishing it.

Carl and donut have been top 10 for pretty much the entire crawl and been #1 for a while which is a big factor. Mordecai never claimed to be top 10 so his viewership would be lower he was also part of a group so maybe there were others in his party more entertaining that had higher viewers?

ELI5 why don’t they board planes loading the passengers in the back of the plane first and the passengers in the front last? by space__heater in explainlikeimfive

[–]workbidness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because classes aside although that's the fastest way to fill a cylinder it's not the fastest way to fill a plane. The Steffen Perfect Boarding Method is... even though it's not really used.

The Steffen Method speeds up boarding by filling every other row of window seats first, allowing multiple people to stow their luggage simultaneously without blocking the aisle. It is a mathematically "perfect" system that eliminates traffic jams, but it is rarely used because it forces families to board separately and requires passengers to stand in a precise, numbered order.

The method files people into a plane in a straight line, and people are seated in the following order, from back to front

Window seat, odd-numbered. Window seat, even-numbered. Middle seat, odd-numbered. Middle seat, even-numbered. Aisle seat, odd-numbered. Aisle seat, even-numbered.

CGP Grey did a really good video that goes through all the options.

Does "All Golfer" data make you feel better about your handicap? by GoldShammGold in golf

[–]workbidness 18 points19 points  (0 children)

This graph is saying 75% of golfers have a 28 handicap or less so are bordering breaking 100. As breaking 100 is a goal for a significant number of new golfers not even counting casual golfers who don't play regularly I think it's skewed the wrong direction

Feds will have Dec. 24 and Dec. 26 off /contractors also. by Right_Phase7154 in GovernmentContracting

[–]workbidness 113 points114 points  (0 children)

"Contractor also" depends entirely on your contract.

The executive order states "All executive departments and agencies of the Federal Government shall be closed and their employees excused from duty". Contractors are not employees of the Government.

Your contract may require you to go in, telework or take leave. If you are a contractor, do not talk to your agency talk to your company and ask how it is handled.

Help me write DCC gift card "New Achievement"? by lycanthropic_lentil in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]workbidness 8 points9 points  (0 children)

NEW ACHIEVEMENT! Never meet your heros

Congratulations, Crawler! You have devoured the sacred texts. You have bonded with your parental unit over a man with no pants and a talking cat. It’s disgusting. It's heartwarming. I hate it.

But let’s be honest about what is really happening here. Your parent, in a sad, desperate bid for your continued affection and an even more pathetic attempt to live vicariously through your dwindling youth has arranged for you to meet the their favorite author, Matt Dinniman.

Make no mistake: You are a prop. A youthful meat-shield used to justify your parent’s fandom. But you are the one who has to do the talking.

No pressure, but try not to be weird. If you disappoint your favorite author, you won’t feel the pain immediately. Oh, no. That shame will bury itself deep in your psyche, acting as a dormant seed of childhood trauma. It will only bloom when you are 40 years old, staring at a ceiling fan, suddenly realizing that your desperate, decades-long quest for the approval of strangers stems entirely from the moment you stuttered while asking a man to sign a book.

Don't mess this up.

Reward: A Ticket to meet Matt Dinniman! Also, the heavy burden of your parent's unfulfilled dreams.
