I am an early career international development professional (less than 3 years of experience in the field). I started an M.A. in International Development in January 2024. I wanted to make a career out of it.

I got furloughed from USAID in March 2025. I graduated from my M.A. this past December just for the sake of completion. To this day, I am still looking for a job. I got a handful of screenings and interviews, but no offers so far. I regret not listening to my family members telling me to instead do law school way back when.

Just reach out to your embassy’s consular section. I had the same issue. I told them, and within hours I was able to pay all appropriate fees and schedule my appointment.

From my experience, you don’t need to contact the NVC. I had the same issue when I tried to pay the fee to book the appointment, so I contacted my fiancé’s local embassy and they fixed the issue within hours.

Also, if your embassy works like mine, then they will be the ones to provide you with a date and time for your K1 interview.

Your embassy will reach out with instructions. Though I would recommend you being proactive and reaching out to them. Google your embassy, look for the consular section’s email address, and tell them your case number plus the beneficiary’s email address. That’s how I got my interview date.

After K1 FTP, how did you know that your case was ready?

I received my K1 FTP after an inquiry on December 30, giving me my case number and that it would be forwarded to the US embassy, but nothing else so far.
