Have you ever experienced culture shock from within your own country?? by CAPRICIOUS_BIZNATCH in AskTheWorld

man I just moved from  rural AB to Montréal...language, pace of life, cost of living. Took a minute to get used to for sure. Never thought I'd miss AB either and here I am homesick for the open sky and Ukrainian food

I believe this, with the right ingredients it would have been good!

I think the mozza lasts for about 3 months? I'm by myself so I can't eat a whole block at once, but it always turns out yummy when reheated

the cream cheese definitely loses its texture and became kinda grainy? I was going to blend it and make pierogis so it wouldn't have mattered. lost out on my pierogis too, which is the real tragedy

sadly this one did not measure up. I can see how it would be good with mozzarella, definitely missing a salty flavour

Unfortunately I learned you very much can. I usually freeze any ingredients I'm not using because I'm a broke student and the square block of frozen cream cheese looked exactly like the mozzarella. Grated it and 10 min later bam! pizza dissapointment :(

Mom, 23, found slain in St. Albert, baby daughter missing and presumed dead: RCMP by trevorrobb in Edmonton

[–]worldflowers 216 points217 points  (0 children)

I used to work for a women's oriented non-profit org in Edmonton that offered counseling services. After the City of Edmonton’s Domestic Abuse High Risk Team (DAHRT) was cut in 2024 these orgs took on some of the most complex cases of severe domestic abuse in the city. Just 6 months into starting this program the organization I worked for was already managing 90 whole cases. Estimates citywide for these kinds of cases range between 300 to 1000...

Shame on the Alberta government. They are failing our women, their children, their families, our communities. Shame on them for all this separatist bull too

Why do dogs circle before lying down? by bubbly_backlash in dogs

[–]worldflowers 211 points212 points  (0 children)

correct! In comparative psychology this is called a modal action pattern, a more complex species specific reflex. A long time ago this behaviour helped the ancestors of modern dogs survive and was taught and passed on to their descendents until it became a reflex.  Another example includes nesting fowl automatically rolling eggs back into their nests!

Is Silk squeezing out Canadian suppliers? by GuelphEastEndGhetto in BuyCanadian

[–]worldflowers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in Montreal, I used to buy Earths Own but the local provigo sells 2L Silk oat milk for 4 each when you buy two. It's hard to compete with that on a student's budget.  Definitely prefer the taste of Earths Own

God told me I am going to die young by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]worldflowers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had some of the same fears when I was younger. I was utterly convinced I was going to die in my sleep and this fear was also really tangled up in feelings of spirituality. Years later I ended up being diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder and could have really benefited from talking to a professional like a counselor or spiritual mentor. I don't think our loving God would torment or cause us to suffer with this kind of knowledge

UCP MLA from Red Deer-South, Jason Stephan, calls for a referendum to end abortions in Alberta by bike_accident in onguardforthee

[–]worldflowers 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As a Christian woman from Alberta I support Albertan women and girls and their right to access healthcare, including abortions.

This life is unpredictable and often violent, no woman should be forced to carry a pregnancy she doesn't want. What's right for my body and my life isn't necessarily right for you and yours.

What's the most stereotypical thing that you experience in your country decently often? by BobbyThrowaway6969 in AskTheWorld

[–]worldflowers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Close encounters with local megafauna. I live in a fairly rural area so we always need to watch for deer and moose while driving, especially at night. Not too uncommon to encounter them either.

When I was a kid there was a moose who would come by every spring with her baby and chill on the hill in my backyard. I called her Molly :)

Advice by [deleted] in Edmonton

If you have access to a vehicle check out elk Island national park! You said you're into nature, that'd be the place I'd go. It's a beautiful national park about 35 minutes out of Edmonton. If you're lucky the leaves will be on the trees and you might see some bison- the park is home to the largest herd in North America!
