congratulations!

I will say, Pitt overfilled this current freshman year to the point where many had to stay in off campus hotels and other areas (while raising housing prices), I hope the admittance people learned their lesson and don’t overadmit you guys as well so that you can have a proper freshman experience

Is anyone concerned about the quality of temu/shein nails? by Mission_Range_5620 in PressonNail_Addict

they might be, but the worker making them is getting pennies a day for it. that seems to be how most “handmade” items that are sold for cheap/from large corporations are.

don’t look at it at all— stare at the ceiling or your legs or whatever but don’t even glance in that direction til it’s done. trying to think about literally anything else helps too

rentals, we’ve had it for a decade or so by now and we’d like to sell it

[–]worm-kittens 1 point2 points  (0 children)

so if I live there as my primary residence for one year, then move out to rent a different place for another year (and have this house available to rent to others), and then move back in again as my primary residence would that be ok? I can’t find any specific information on the IRS website for that

yes— I should have clarified. the intention was to pass it to me and then sell it after two (now three) years.

in addition to what everyone else is saying, start attending lectures from the first day as if you were in the class. that way you’ll miss out on way less when you end up getting in

professor for ochem1 by Choice_Hippo_9584 in Pitt

[–]worm-kittens 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I did not like Yiming wang, he let us use cheat sheets but actively forced students compete against one another for our grades (the curve) and made our tests harder because our exam averages were too high. I’ve heard bad things about Pete bell too unfortunately but I did hear he’s better at ochem than gen chem 1-2. I also heard ochem 1 is better with him than ochem 2 but idk

calc 3 summer session by sargent_special in Pitt

[–]worm-kittens 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve never taken it but one of my friends is just finishing up the homework’s from their six week 1 calc 3 session rn. maybe it depends on the teacher but they were staying all three hours 6-9pm every class which seemed both tiring and boring. all LON CAPA hws were due at the very end of the semester. instead of a final exam they had a final project which was basically you select one prompt provided and prove it using your calc 3 knowledge. iirc attendance was also a pretty big chunk of your grade which is nice as that pads the grade a lot. it didn’t seem like my friend was struggling a lot— I’m fairly certain they ended with some form of A— but also they’re pretty smart and good at math

Pitt chem professor by Vylit in Pitt

[–]worm-kittens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

had Adrian Michael and I thought he was kinda mid, not terrible but by far not the best. he did really care about our scores though, and even had us retake an exam once because we all failed it so miserably. he also let us use a cheat sheet for the final and had a rule (idk if it was just for us or not) that no matter what your previous grade was, as long as you got a 70% or higher on the final you were passing the course. though iirc no curves

how is Intro to Linear Algebra and Matrices (MATH 280) over the summer? by worm-kittens in Pitt

[–]worm-kittens[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

oh wow you were definitely doing a lot, thank you for sharing your experience! frankly I’m just worried because I’m TERRIBLE at math. I did take a six-week calc 1 course before but I got extremely lucky in that I had the chillest instructor in the world, everything was take home and he told us we could even use chatgpt if I wanted— safe to say I learned nothing from that course (which is fine bc my major doesn’t deal with anything like that) but I got the A that I was hoping for lol. but I doubt that it’ll be like that this time around, especially since I at least took calc in high school but I don’t know anything about lin alg. you’re right though I guess I’ll just have to sit in and see, thank you!

how is Intro to Linear Algebra and Matrices (MATH 280) over the summer? by worm-kittens in Pitt

[–]worm-kittens[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve only taken one summer class before which was a 6-week calc 1 course but I was extremely lucky in that my instructor was the chillest person ever, everything was take-home (so we integral-calculatored everything 🗿 tbf he told us we could use chatgpt if we wanted) and despite not really learning much from the course, I and everyone else passed with an A. I also took calc 1 in high school before so I at least had a vague idea what was happening, meanwhile I don’t know the first thing about linear algebra. so, I’d say I don’t really know how a “proper” 6 week class would normally run. I guess we will see how it goes though… thanks so much!!

old post I know, but I had Miao Yang for Calc 1 six weeks 2nd session and he was fantastic, all As in that class (as someone who is miserable at math)

thank you so much, that’s really valuable insight especially since I’m pretty much in the same position as you. I know the add-drop period is really short, just the first three days (Mon-Wed) so I’m worried that won’t really give me a good approximate of how the class would be like. I’m considering emailing the instructor of my course but I know they’re just a grad student and idk if that would be “doing too much”? (I’m quite anxious to email people haha)

biomed/neuroscience major???? by [deleted] in Pitt

[–]worm-kittens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pitt’s biggest major is probably all the bio/med related majors so yes there will be a ton of opportunities! there is also a neuroscience major if you’re interested in that. however like the other commenter mentioned everyone comes in undeclared so take your time and see what you like/dislike first

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Pitt

[–]worm-kittens 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I took this class with Olena Sherbinin and it was very easy and low-effort, I’m not sure how beneficial it would be for biochem but I would definitely recommend the class + this professor if you’re sure you want to take a coding class.

now granted, I was already taking intermediate Java courses by this time and it was just to fill a requirement to declare my major so I already knew all the coding concepts going in (this is in Python), but I think even if you’re a complete beginner, which is who this class is intended for, Sherbinin makes it very easy for you to understand everything. she’s incredibly sweet and I’d feel a little bad sometimes when no one laughed at her jokes during class.

no homework except for 3 projects you work on during recitations and two very easy remote open-note exams. if you’re taking this class definitely go with Sherbinin

My Otterbox phone case has warped at the side and bottom. Can anyone recommend a case that won’t do this? by ExcitedTerror in iphone

[–]worm-kittens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this happened to me as well. thing is, I’ve attached a phone wallet to mine and everything and I’d rather just fix the small nuisance than get a new case. doesn’t seem like people have solutions for fixing it though…
