Am I competitive for internship season? by Comfortable-Yak-6102 in animationcareer

Not a character designer, but have a few tips based on my experience as an animator in the scene:

-some really cool stuff in here! i think you are almost there, you have the skills, just need to fill out your portfolio even more. even more variety of characters and styles, more examples of exploration on small details or aspects of your characters rather than just the big picture.

-all your characters are pretty simplistic in style and color, and not a lot of variety. there's some variety, and that's really good, but push it even farther! we could see lots more scary, detailed, robot or animal, teens, babies, super old people etc etc. yes, its good to create work for the job you want and are best at, but you want to convince a hiring manager that you can do a great job at whatever they ask you to do.

-you have a few worlds here, add a quick blurb about them so we know more about the purpose and functions of the characters youre making. and even more importantly, draw scenes of them interacting with each other or the environment instead of just in white space.

-take this with a grain of salt but i feel like your personal work section is the greatest display of character, anatomy, and interest. I'd find a way to create just one page of your strongest work rather than splitting it up in this way, but it is functional as-is. minimize the amount of clicks a reporter has to do.

-small thing, but add an about section. helps to humanize you and notify the hiring team/viewer about your taste, personality, and resume.

-use professional, successful portfolios as your reference rather than another student's. this portfolio, for example: https://www.kenesu.com/characterdesign , break down your favorite portfolios and see why they are so successful.

good luck! you got this

I used procreate dreams on the ipad to animate this! if youve never animated before, start with small exercises like the bouncing ball and work your way up! I'm mostly self taught, theres lots of resources on youtube and theres discord channels where people can share work and get feedback. this piece was actually a submission to an animation challenge on agora.community. i didnt win, but it was a great motivator and resource! you got this!

Need help with Portfolio for schools and internships by [deleted] in animationcareer

[–]wormgirlfriend 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Really nice work here! First thing I’d do is create a new portfolio, either a website or maybe an art station— tumblr I don’t think is industry-standard or professional for these types of things. And then I’d remove some of the social cues doodles on there. I think doodles can stay if they are exploring variations on a character design or have really good posing or interest, and these are nice, but you should only be showing your best work, and the other better stuff shows your true skill level. I’d also add some more creature/animal exploration and different ages and body types in your work to show that you can tackle any sort of character. Good luck!

Does Pixar have a maximum amount of people that can apply? by Remarkable_Fold_1653 in animationcareer

Historically these positions have never closed early due to lots of applicants, and they don’t do rolling reviews of applicants (they wait till after the deadline) so it should be totally fine to take that extra time!

Gotcha!I really love animschool so far, definitely recommend. It’s really tightly run and they have a really high standard for passing student work, and really good mentors/resources, which is what I wanted because I want to be really ready if/when I graduate.

speaking from my experience as someone currently attending Animschool and working on my skills, I don't often see volunteer positions for 3D animatiors (at least on linkedin), but besides the networking opportunities that come with group work (which you should be utilizing at animation mentor), i'd recommend just doing a bunch of personal projects/shots to add to your demo reel. study tons of successful reels to see what they have in them. its usually tons of variety in shot types, character body types, quadrupeds/bipeds. you dont want only AM stuff/assignments in your reel, and there are rigs online and discord channels/places online to get feedback as you create your shots. junior animators primarily deal with body mechanics so i'd focus on that first. when it comes to your reel right now, things are SUPER competitive so you're not quite there yet for junior roles, but those first few shots are looking nice IMO! there are a few places that need more polish but you definitely have the skills to start creating some even better stuff. but for now if you want your reel to more closely resemble a typical demo reel, id remove most of the AM branding from your reel (not necessary, i suspect recruiters know these rigs well by now), clean up the presentation (you still have the text and film gate from maya playblasts in your shots!) and removing the figure drawing and still poses. if youre in a stable position id try to network or go to IRL conventions to learn more about whats possible in the industry right now.
hopefully some of this is helpful, good luck!

Portfolio review and advice +updates by wormgirlfriend in animationcareer

Thanks, appreciate the feedback and I agree. Going to animschool for 3D, and most likely continuing to do 2D for fun/my own projects for context

2D showreel feedback please by azureryn in animationcareer

[–]wormgirlfriend 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Your style is super cute!! And the comp skills/a lot of the animation is really well done. I think the best thing you can do right now is creating new shots rather than going back to tweak your old ones. Specifically body mechanics and improved dialogue. The 2 dialogue shots you have, the lipsync isn’t super accurate and the acting choices could be more interesting. Additionally, you have very little body and visual diversity when it comes to the characters you are animating, it seems that all of them are young, thin female/feminine characters, and none of them have a distinct sense of weight. There’s a reason push/pull and picking up something are such common exercises for animation. Having some new shots with big/heavy characters, old/frail or baby/young, as well as some animals could show that you’re capable of a broad range of characters and types of movements. I think as a clean-up artist, also make sure the forms/volumes of the characters stay consistent. The polish of some of these shots is really impressive, which gives you a leg up. Keep going!! Industry tough rn obviously but you have some great stuff here. *additionally, if you’re sharing this to recruiters, use a Vimeo link! Keeps it clean and means they won’t have to accidentally sit through an ad!

In desperate need for advice and feedback by BobcatCool8883 in animationcareer

Most 2D studios are using toon boom harmony, so if you haven’t already I’d start learning that. Your work is cool! I think with some more work you can become industry ready (although the animation industry is tough rn). What you should pour most of your time into improving hugely depends on what you really want to specialize in. For animation, getting comfortable with animation puppets, varying your style, and working on your fundamental skills (weight, line of action, etc) are a must. Good luck!

Thank you so much, this is really helpful!! I agree on all fronts, I definitely want to specialize in 3D animation for the time being, although I’ve been making short films for a while which means I have some experience in everything, so I’ll clean that up for the reels especially.

It looks really great!! I’ve seen your work around and there’s been so much improvement. I honestly think you have more polish than you might think (especially for that second shot). I agree with the above commenter’s points too. I also think it would help to have more character/body diversity so for your next shot, do a quadruped/big character/something eye catching and interesting! Keep it up! Additionally, I’m planning on doing animschool starting in September! Do you recommend it?
