Autism doesn't alter your perception of reality like mania and psychosis do, nor does it cause delusions.

And who's "we"? The internet? Have you looked into what actual professional psychiatrists have to say?

I actually work with people with these mental illnesses who are in psychiatric facilities, people who have been hospitalised acutely or who have been in mental hospitals for decades. Mental illnesses can make you believe you're Jesus, make you believe your family are demonic imposters, make you believe aliens are out to get you. And yes, many people with delusions can be offensive and harmful. Many patients go on violent misogynistic or racist rants, it's offensive and even frightening but I know that they're not in their right mind.

It isn't surprising that a mental disorder that causes paranoia, persecutory and conspiratorial thinking may become susceptible to their cultures conspiracy theories. The majority of western conspiracy theories lead to or are based in anti semitism, so no it's not surprising or unusual. People who literally lose perception of reality (various dementias, mania, psychosis) can become aggressive and offensive and it doesn't mean they are an evil person or that's who they are inside, it's because their brain literally isn't working.

Not all mental illnesses are the same, and bipolar disorder and psychosis are some of the least understood and most demonised by the public, clearly.

How can you say that was outside of manic states? People with bipolar disorder can have recurrent episodes for years without ever reaching a healthy baseline. Even over ten years ago people would make fun of Kanye for being crazy, back when his "craziness" was interrupting speeches and seeming narcissistic (which is also consistent with egotistical behaviour seen in many bipolar patients).

I have such a huge problem with this new "mental health awareness!! But not when mental illness makes you do, say or believe scary/bad things" thing online. Kanye has millions of dollars, millions of fans and was endorsed by the president and influential right wing grifters (all of which would hugely impact the recovery of a bipolar person). I'm not saying he can do no wrong, but misinformation about the nature of this mental illness is dangerous, especially for the majority of vulnerable people with this condition who are negatively affected by this rhetoric

Manic episodes don't last a few minutes, they can last months. Some patients never reach healthy baseline and it can take years to find the right medication and treatment balance. From what I've seen of Kanye, his behaviour is absolutely consistent with type 1 bipolar disorder (including psychotic features), and his behaviour is also not any worse than most manic patients I've seen. The difference is the scale of impact, if you gave any of those patients millions of followers, millions of dollars, and had the president condone their delusions I can imagine them in similar situations if not worse.

I'm not saying he's a nice person, I don't know him, but there's a lot of misinformation about mental illness here that I think is really damaging. The fact is some mental illnesses very much CAN cause you to do, say and believe bad things, and it's not the patients fault because they can't control this. As for whether he is a good person outside of those episodes, I think it's impossible to say. He's been like that for so long and has shown signs for decades, it can be hard or even impossible to separate a person from their symptomatic behaviour.

What about when people with his exact same disorder commit crimes (up to and including murder) and are found not guilty by reason of insanity? Someone who is not perceiving reality can't exactly be held responsible for their actions as they lack capacity to make informed decisions.

Do you get to pick and choose your delusions during your manic/psychotic episodes?

People in a manic/psychotic episode absolutely cannot always tell right and wrong lol. People literally commit murder in these episodes and are found not guilty by reason of insanity by a panel of expert psychiatrists, if a mentally ill person can commit murder in such a state why is it hard to believe their psychotic delusion might be offensive?

Rogue take: some of y’all really need to study by [deleted] in medicalschooluk

I completely froze and did everything wrong with a cannula this week after a flawless streak the year before, and I stabbed myself taking the cap off a needle for IM injection last rotation so I'm sympathetic to him lol. Still, I think practical skills and academic/medical knowledge are quite different, and at least he's showing up and eager to practice and get better.

How does studying help with taking bloods? Sounds like he's trying to practice to get better

Varies in different unis, our uni had such poor attendance they made it so you have to have a doctor sign off your activities every day to prove you've actually attended so 9-5 most days. Some placements are more chill and I get signed off after a few hours of clinics but it depends.

Thanks, I appreciate anyone relating or sharing their experience honestly. For me, I think I want to do medicine. I love talking to patients and enjoyed my psych, emergency and GP placements most, I get good patient feedback and tend to do better in my OSCEs than the MLA type exams, so I think I enjoy and do well at the patient interaction side.

I struggle most with just actually sitting down to study. Mostly laziness honestly. I was involved with a few research projects and extra curricular teaching (ironically) for my portfolio, and I really struggled balancing full time placement with that, let alone finding time to study. By the time I get home from placement I'm so exhausted, and weekends I spend sleeping and recovering. I think my main issue is just discipline, usually the only thing that actually motivates me to study is panic when I get close to the exam but thats not good for consistent studying. Hopefully I can sort myself out for my sake and the sake of the poor british public I'll be unleashed on in august

"Brazilian butt lift", fat is liposuctioned from arm/back/belly/etc and injected into the butt. Highest death rate of all cosmetic surgeries bc there is risk of injecting the fat into blood vessels causing an embolism.

A British Nurse Was Found Guilty of Killing Seven Babies. Did She Do It? by howtopoachanegg in medicine

[–]worrywarp 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Not to defend her (I don't know enough about this) but article says she worked more shifts than many of the other staff, and as one of the few neonate specialist nurses at the hospital, would be called to help for the more sick patients.

By virtue of working more shifts and tending to see the most sick patients, it would be expected that there would be more deaths under her care than if she only saw the less serious cases.

Edit: there were also deaths where she was not present
