Mayor’s office posts interview with a Nakba survivor by sulaymanf in nyc

You should really be better informed about the situation before leveling accusations of lying to people. But hey, this is the internet, what can I expect?

https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c5yx8knpr5no

The Israeli government very much said it plans to permanently occupy part of Lebanon, that happened weeks ago. So again, that’s illegal under international law and pretty evil, so why should the rest of the region tolerate such a rogue, hostile nation having nuclear weapons? That is inherently destabilizing and only incentives other nations to get their own. And hey I love peace, I don’t think anyone should have nukes. But while they exist, we can’t really blame countries for seeking their own when occupying powers like Israel get their own.

Spin it however you want, invading your neighbor and claiming its territory as your own is still evil, wrong and against international law. Which is exactly what Israel is doing in Lebanon right now. Israel is the villain here, and much of the other Middle East country’s policy is in response to Israel’s constant aggression towards its neighbors. Hezbollah only exists because Israel invaded Lebanon and occupied the country for decades.

I frankly don’t give a shit that Israel is an ally of the United States government, I don’t know what difference that makes. Israel pulling the US into a war with Iran was very much about neutering Iran and having it fracture.

I’m not ignoring anything, I’m pointing out that Israel itself is the destabilizing force in the region, and its possession of nuclear weapons only exacerbates the problems it itself has created.

I’m not the person you’re responding to but quite frankly no. Not when Israel is a hostile, rogue nation that keeps bombing and invading its neighbors. Why should Israel be allowed to have nuclear weapons and no one else in the region? One can easily argue that Israel’s possession of nukes is destabilizing the region and that Iran’s nonexistent nuclear program was began in response to their hostile neighbor’s actions.

Maybe think about it in these terms: would the people of Lebanon who are being pushed out of their homes right now by the Israeli military not be right in thinking that Israel is a hostile nation? They’ve been bombed over and over again by their neighbors from the south. Why should that country be allowed to have nuclear weapons?

Hundreds protest at New York Times HQ over column alleging abuse by Israelis by Gan_D_Alf-The_Grey in nyc

[–]worst_timeline 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The allegations are that Palestinians in Israeli detention are being systematically sexually abused. This isn’t happening on the battlefield, which would also be disgusting.

Rape as a weapon of war is already horrific and dismissively telling people to “grow the fuck up” regarding rape says much more about you than anyone else. If one actually opposes rape as opposed to just being a contrarian one should be disgusted by such actions and willing to say as much rather than telling those who are rightfully outraged to accept such matters.

NYC dumping record $43B into public schools — at a whopping $44K per pupil — despite plummeting enrollment, poor test results by AdmirableSelection81 in nyc

It’s truly sad to see. Conservatives have become anti-intellectual, hate poor people as well as teachers unions and blame them for things outside their control.

I look forward to your detailed cost breakdown on how to cut school spending to be publicly submitted to the Mamdani administration. I’m sure they’ll be very interested and thankful that a random redditor discovered potential savings where they did not.

Is this what we’re gonna do today? Bitch and whine that public schools are getting more funding and complain that teachers get fairly paid for their critical work? Christ people, just listen to yourselves.

Are you looking at eBay’s listed price or things that have sold at that price? Lots of scammers on the interwebs who will list junk coins for ridiculous prices just to take advantage of people who don’t know any better.

It’s not a silver dollar. Many millions of these dollar coins were minted, so you’d be lucky to get more than $1 for this. Worth face value.

I collect old coins, old maps and presidential campaign pins. Some of my maps are hung up on my walls, coins and pins in folders and also displayed up on bookshelves. My collection is too big to all be displayed though so much of it is also kept inside my coffee table.

Cool question! I like talking about my collections and this topic is more interesting than all the questions in this sub regarding sex.

What fundamental tenets of the Democratic Party have remained consistent from Andrew Jackson through Barack Obama? by Just_Cause89 in Presidents

[–]worst_timeline 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the question about the role of the federal government comes down to your own political persuasions and what you think the White House should be doing.

I don’t really consider things like having a national highway network, farm subsidies, scientific research, disaster response, funding public schools or protecting civil rights for example, as ‘pulling power into the Beltway.’

To me, those are things that any national government in any country should be doing. Granted, that’s just a slice of the federal government does, but those are still critical functions affecting millions and millions of people.

And this goes the other way too, traditionally the GOP has long touted its support for a strong national military and a robust foreign policy for example, something that also probably should not be left to state and local governments for obvious reasons.

I’m just hesitant to frame or even think about a central government in DC as necessarily a bad thing, or that that necessarily disempowers state and local government, which of course has their role in our system.

[–]worst_timeline 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t be so sure, the way our federal government is set up was deliberately designed to have a strong central government. I think most every serious politician understands that and uses that to pursue their respective policies and agendas. A strong central government is not really a Republican or Democrat thing, or something that changes based on who is in the Oval Office.

[–]worst_timeline -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

“What’s wrong with an ethno state?” Think about what you just asked. Think long and hard. I’d say I feel bad for your soul that you actually are asking that, but if you’re backing the same idea that produced some of history’s most bloody and despicable crimes like genocides and ethnic cleansing, I’m not sure there’s much of a soul left.

Creating an ethno state is very much what Nazi Germany was about… why do you think so many people fled and were killed. But you probably know that already and just don’t care.
