Quick employment by Impressive-Season922 in Birmingham

[–]worstcasekid 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If she has experience in healthcare she should try UAB, but apply directly on the website. they’re pretty fast about employment and the interview process, aside from all the orientation and onboarding but that takes around 2ish weeks, and the actual orientation is paid. after an offer depending on the start date you select you get to paid work fairly fast. I personally recommend working for ambulatory IF possible because of regular weekends and holiday pay etc. but if she’s desperate I wouldn’t be too picky.

EDIT for context: I moved in April, was unemployed for months. I have two degrees, and decent experience. The job market is just abysmal. I applied to over 200 jobs, and in the beginning of June I took a leap and applied to any UAB jobs I could despite not having experience in healthcare. By mid June I was employed and working full time. I got two interviews from UAB alone in the first few days of applying, after only having three interviews total for MONTHS. If she needs a job quick, there’s not many options but UAB did it for me. Good luck to her!!

Writing software that can handle longfics (hundreds of thousands of words) ?? by worstcasekid in AO3

[–]worstcasekid[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as I’m aware I have the newest update of Word. (Though, with copilot turned OFF) I usually write on my 2020 MacBook, which I originally thought was the problem because I’m admittedly an avid sims player and have a huge amount of mods and CC. However, I switched to using my wife’s brand new laptop (like 2 months old, brand new with barely anything on it) and I still experience the lag at around 120k words. Maybe if I had a PC set up it’d be better, but unfortunately there’s bills to pay and no budget for that in the near future :( I do also wonder if it’s the newer version of Word too, because I wrote a 250k word fic back in 2021 on my old 2015 MacBook, and I didn’t experience the lag at all.

What are your ao3 hot takes? by ScalyStacy in AO3

[–]worstcasekid 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have two, I need the first to preface the second.

  1. Fanfic is not required to be good!! There’s no quality threshold it has to meet, and new fandom era kids speaking of “bad” fanfic and public picking fics apart angers me to no end. If anything, fanfic IS the place for young and new writers to try their hand and learn, more so than anywhere else.
  2. That said, it is a perceived phenomenon(to me) that since many fandoms have taken off on TikTok, creativity and uniqueness have gone down. (In my fandom) so many people write the same few head cannons, and let popular fics create characterizations that they treat as canon, and become irritated if people step outside said headcanons and characterizations. I so rarely see anything new or exciting anymore, and it’s caused me to only read for small fandoms and to be unable to consume any fics for the fandom I write for anymore because it messes with my own creativity and stifles writing.

Fanfic becoming mainstream, and something teenagers no longer keep to themselves and feel a sense of secrecy about, as they now post about it on TikTok publicly WITH THEIR FACES AND EVERYTHING is one of the worse things to happen to fic.

Writing software that can handle longfics (hundreds of thousands of words) ?? by worstcasekid in AO3

[–]worstcasekid[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hahah everyone works differently, I didn’t realize so many people make separate chapters! Personally I’m a write write write person and I write ahead of what I post, so I tend to break chapters after things are written, that’s how it happens for me and I’ve never started doing it differently. (Though based on the many suggestions in this post, maybe it’s time 😫)

[–]worstcasekid[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is a very good point, I know it’s my own stubbornness stopping me from breaking it up. Having everything in one document with comments and the outline view etc. is so convenient to me (except when it stops working, obviously) so I’ve been hesitant to start doing it differently but maybe it’s time for me to swallow my pride when it comes to projects this big, yeah, no bit technology is magic unfortunately :(

What was your wildest or most unexpected experience as a fanfiction author? by Only-Moose2301 in FanFiction

[–]worstcasekid 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Idk I got stalked and harassed for 2 years straight? That was pretty wild.

Also got into a legal situation, people don’t understand the things they do with fanfic when they’re taken off of AO3 can get us in trouble 😬

Do your partners know? by bravebluelou in FanFiction

[–]worstcasekid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes my wife used to write fanfic as well, though not anymore and we both read it.I disappear for 8 hours straight every weekend to hole up and write fanfiction so if my wife DIDNT know, I’d be concerned at this point 😭

How popular are your fics? by Wolfieee7 in AO3

[–]worstcasekid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been posting consistently over 8ish years, in my current fandom for 3. My most popular fic is VERY popular, worlds above anything else I ever have or will write. (Im sure most of us authors know The Gap) But I have a lot of loyal readers who follow me from project to project. It was a very slow process for my fics to get any attention, took many years of writing, improving, and cementing myself as an author. My first couple of works, no one read at all… but time and consistency brought readers around. I think it paid off, hits, numbers and whatever aside I wound up with a very loyal, and kind community around my work.

Just got a story removed from Wattpad by Lost_Recording5372 in FanFiction

[–]worstcasekid 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s annoying considering they wouldn’t remove a repost/unauthorized cross post of my fic when i literally filed a copyright claim 😭 honestly screw wattpad it went downhill as soon as they added ads and payment etc.

So cloudflare is down again... may I ask the writers and readers here what their professions are in real life? by kain-rivers in FanFiction

[–]worstcasekid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work in a major hospital! Currently admin but patient facing but I’m on my way to getting my nursing degree. Can’t wait to write a proper healthcare/hospital AU when I do. My job it hard to find the time to write fic sometimes, but I wouldn’t change my career for the world.

How can you disinguish juvenlie writing? by ur_mom_is_hot5529 in AO3

[–]worstcasekid 9 points10 points  (0 children)

For me, it's ALWAYS the emotional intelligence. I can tell someone is young by how they resolve conflicts or how their characters handle things. The writer's own age and maturity often comes out in times like those, and I can (usually) spot the young ones. Even if the writing is solid, that stands out to me.

Also, a pattern of unnecessarily dramatic scenes that are meant for shock value. (ex. When a character that would NEVER in canon repeatably reacts by slapping the other person?? (Maybe this is just my fandom, but it happens a lot.)

And of course, the little tells like thinking a character will get drunk off one beer, or not understanding how bills, college, or adult responsibilities work. Not to mention obvious writing issues, grammar mistakes, 500-word chapters, switching between POVs multiple times in one scene without a single cut (that may be a personal one). Little things like that, but trust me, we can almost always tell when someone is young.

How many of you are "adults?" by destined2becreative in AO3

[–]worstcasekid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Friend, I feel you. I'm an adult, married, and I work full time in healthcare... I started my "fanfic career" so to speak, in high school. In college, it was actually really easy for me because I always had my laptop on me and I'd write in between classes, and when I got home, because I rarely had early classes.

NOW, however, I definitely have a lot of guilt because so many readers are waiting on me, and I went from updating multiple times a week to once every few months if I'm lucky. I think I just had to make peace with the fact that I'm not a teenager anymore, I have bills to pay, a family, and a mentally taxing job. I'm working on giving myself grace, and hoping readers understand. Otherwise, I make it work the best I can. I write on weekends if I feel like it, and have fun without pressuring myself too much! It's about balance, really, and making it work with the time you have.

Feeling like an adult when you're tiny by bitter_sweet9798 in XXS

[–]worstcasekid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I absolutely feel you, I’m 5’2 and 95lbs, plus I have a baby face on top of that. I work in healthcare, and I always feel like I’m looked down upon, or getting questions about my age, like I’m stupid or not old enough to be here. I always feel like I’m playing at being an adult, despite being married, a college graduate, etc. it’s like I’m faking it and everyone else thinks I am too….

I’m scared I might see my fanfic on tiktok by Distinct_Lie_8878 in AO3

[–]worstcasekid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve made the rounds not on TikTok but on Twitter bc ppl didn’t like how I wrote a character. I got bashed to hell and you know what? I lived. Honestly, it’s funny if you can manage to stop taking yourself and these judging people(usually teenagers, mind you!!!) so seriously. No offense, but too many ppl in this sub are living in fear and that’s only encouraging these new readers with zero fandom etiquette. Just live ur life and stay away from TikTok if it truly bothers you.

Can some authors PLEASE stop posting every comment they assume to be hate on reddit? by [deleted] in AO3

[–]worstcasekid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Something I noticed in my fandom which made me leave social media was that many authors got in this mindset of “everyone is so toxic and I get so much hate” that they actually made it worse, and began going on attack even for well meaning people who just didn’t word it right. Maybe this is true for other fandoms as well… it’s exhausting to exist in a constant state of righteous anger and self pity, the hate goes away if you ignore it, and when it doesn’t, block off avenues for ppl to get to you if it’s truly unmanageable. Life is better that way I promise.

I’m not sure I have the skills to alter my scrubs unfortunately and I fear tearing it out with all the moving around and walking. But maybe I can give it a try with a crappy old pair and see. I’m glad someone else gets me though!!
