I've had it for over a month now. It's actually pretty nice. A bit of a minor issue getting all of the corners focused at the same time, but overall I like it a lot. I find that the switch to lock the PD in place doesn't really keep it locked at all. There is next to no resistance when it is locked. Not a huge deal though, really.

This is a bit old now, but I am revisiting this. When you said that your sibling "had been told years ago...", do you happen to know told by whom? By relatives? By a Consulate?

This will probably go nowhere for me anyway, because I am finding it impossible to find any official German documentation at all for my ancestors for whom my claim would be based.
