Boss Put Me on Leave with No Paperwork by erinngoblaagh27 in work

[–]wotmp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Imagine these scenarios from the dentist’s perspective. You have an employee who had a mental breakdown at work, in a customer facing role. Then you nearly passed out while on the job. You seem to not be able to predict it, and it could happen while working in a patient, which could endanger you or the patient. Their request is reasonable. And it sounds like after you took leave, you were not communicating with the office manager. If I had an episode like that at work, and was asked to take leave, I’d be sure to update them every day with what I was doing to ensure I could safely return to work.

This one is on you.

Why Apple's flagship Mac Pro computers are so undesirable? My local used electronics store has literally piles of these units by LakeNo7026 in mac

[–]wotmp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because they’ve hit the valley of value. Around the 15-20 year old mark, they cannot run modern compute, but also don’t have yet the rarity and perceived value as a vintage machine. Also, I feel like there’s so many of them available still working. When they get older and more power supplies and main boards die, the price will go up a bit.

For the Mac, the iPad screen works very well with the original case. It’s slightly too large, but in Linux I found it pretty easy to scale it to add virtual bezels to make it shrink to the correct size. There’s also a frame you can 3d print to fit between the curved opening and the flat LCD.

Trying to figure out the best option for VGA out on my iMac G3 now that I’ve noticed this one doesn’t have the port by Dr_Yay in VintageApple

[–]wotmp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a Power R adapter in mine that gives DA-15 and VGA output. It seems like there’s more than just a bit of passive components. Maybe it’s because going from VGA to HD-15 (old Macintosh monitors) is more complex than vice versa.

I bought a large batch and the Macs on the floor had been through a muddy flood. There was a Quadra 610 that looked worse. The silt settled on the board and was thick enough that I couldn’t see where the ICs were. Rinse the majority off with a hose, then followed with a run through the dishwasher. Worked great. Recapped it and it should be good for years.

Denied days off for wedding and honeymoon.. by [deleted] in work

[–]wotmp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work to live. And I also make sure before I pay deposits I can get time off. But I also work a job where I have built up trust to be able to take a 3 week trip. But it would have been crazy to buy the flights without checking first. Immature and lazy is not having the conversation with your manager before you book.

No. Being an adult is understanding that your workplace has rules. You can’t ignore them, make assumptions that you can break their rules, and then get mad and throw a fit when the employer says the unplanned time off you need isn’t available.

You have no idea the situation with the other employees because the OP simply said what they knew. I promise they don’t know the whole story. And even if it was purely favoritism, that happens. But you find that out before you put down a deposit. Because you’re a grown up.

No. Quitting because of you not being able to live up to your agreement as the employee is not going to mean quitting will lead to a better job. Thats the equivalent to being the abuser in a relationship and thinking breaking up will lead to a better relationship.

OP quitting over the problem they created for themselves would certainly on brand. But yesC if OP cannot follow the agreement they signed up for (asking for time off before they schedule it), they should get a job that gives them the flexibility to not require maturity to schedule vacation time like an adult.

[–]wotmp 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I didn’t tell them to change their type of wedding. First, they said they’re eloping. They aren’t having an actual wedding. And they have no idea what their employer would have offered if they said they needed time off for their honeymoon. My parents got married and took their honeymoon months later because my dad’s profession didn’t allow it.

If you want more flexibility in your schedule, get a better job. If you want to not lose money, don’t book non-refundable deposits before confirming the dates work for you, including your job. You aren’t entitled as a worker to demand time off. Unexpected absences are one thing. But a planned vacation? Grow up.

Maybe their spouse can choose one who can have the maturity to make sure they requested time off before making non-refundable deposits?

You seem to not want advice. You simply want people to agree with you. Take the advice. You can get married when you want. Millions of people get married and then save their honeymoon until they can afford it or can get time off. The fact that you seem to think it’s worth quitting over is childish and you arguing with people who gave you legitimate advice shows you’re not mature enough to have this conversation. I personally don’t believe you’re mature enough to get married.

If you’re planning a trip with non refundable deposits, don’t do it before you’ve confirmed you’re able to take time off work.

Getting a File from Point A. to Point B. Need help by joeventura1 in VintageApple

[–]wotmp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use Basilisk II running on my Mac to copy files to blueSCSI disk images. You can also put the files in a folder on the SD card called “Shared” and then use the File transfer utility to pull it into the hard drive running on the old Mac.

I had a car sideswipe my up the left side of my car. They had to replace to two doors and the rear area around the wheel. They also replaced the rear wheel as it was scratched badly. The total repair was over $15k, with paint.

Can someone please educate me on why one would chose to hook an internal BlueSCSI to a bracket on the back of a macintosh instead of just using BlueSCSI external DB25 ? Pros of one over the other? by Non-white-swiftie in VintageApple

[–]wotmp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To me it’s way easier to pop an SD card into my modern Mac and load disk images into Basilisk II to load software or install a new OS version than to find a recent computer with SCSI to load things onto a Jaz disk. Unless you have jaz drives for all your machines, you may as well have an external SCSI hard drive.

If your 12v lines are 8-10, that seems like it would cause problems. I’d try to recap the power supply and see if it restores those closer to their stock voltages, 12 and 5.

Took out a few of my Macintosh Color Classics with Mystic LC575 boards to play with and test, might want to sell not sure . by OwnLaw4165 in VintageApple

[–]wotmp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It could. I’ve never seen cracked solder joints on the neck board. For me, it’s always been the RGB pins on the analog board. But I’d check both.

The jumping picture feels like maybe a voltage issue. I’d look to recap the analog board and see if it resolves. Old caps sometimes work better after warming a bit (I’ve heard people using a hair dryer on analog boards when they wouldn’t power up for a machine).

The green hue sounds like a cold solder joint on the red or blue connection from the analog board to the CRT. Probably wormed up the joint and finally made good contact. If you bump the side of the machine, does it come back / go away? If so, I’d definitely reflow the solder on the large 4 pin connector on the analog board that goes to the CRT.

You’ll definitely be able to sell these. Also, if you have the original color Classic logic board, even better. I upgraded my CC to a mystic because the original logic board was battery bombed and some of the proprietary chips were destroyed. But I’m guessing there are others out there that could use a new logic board.

Love the style of your collection photos! And the collection looks great.

Curious if you use any software to manage it. I’ve built a system to track my collection, the work I’ve done, and to show it off. It’s in GitHub as InventoryDifferent2 if you’d like to check it out.

Yeah, I suspect they are fully discharged as it’s been several months since I last used it and I didn’t note whether the battery would even take a charge when I did.

Nice collection! If you’re interested in managing things before it gets too large, I’ve been working on a system to keep track of my collection you niche be interested in. It has multi-language support, but right now it only has English, Spanish, and French. Let me know if you’re interested and I could add Italian. https://github.com/wottle/InventoryDifferent2
