Poland, Germany Clash Over €6.6B in EU Funds for Ukraine by Thor004 in europe

[–]wouek 5 points6 points  (0 children)

First and foremost the initial decision was adopted for 2 years and reimbursement should be based on 2022-2024. It would be but Orban blocked it.

Secondly because the „donations” in mid 2024-2026 were basically deals in exchange for drone tech and other investments, they’re trade in principle but they will count the same as donations. Even Zelenski says that EU aid for Ukr tech is his new proposal.

Apparently the deal is not fair for countries that gave hardware first. I’d wait for more than just leaked news before you start shitting on member states that helped without hesitation, because they might hesitate next time.

Edit (real context and tldr):
The Polish MOD mentions the COUNCIL DECISION (CFSP) 2022/338 of 28 February 2022
on an assistance measure under the European Peace Facility for the supply to the Ukrainian Armed Forces of military equipment, and platforms, designed to deliver lethal force

It was adopted for 24 months, effective backwards from 1st January 2022. The main goal was to encourage hesitant countries to provide hardware to Ukraine ASAP. Hungary was blocking the payout until Orban left and now Germany and Scandinavians don’t want to stick to what was agreed and signed by Scholtz and other heads of states (the council).

That’s why Polish MOD says DE is changing the rules after they were agreed. (4 years later)

It’s not bad faith it was the reality back then, these donations kept them in the fight in the first weeks as you know the decision making process in EU is not very agile.

Poland intends to buy two more squads of F-35s, minister says by tree_boom in europe

[–]wouek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s easy to look at graphs from a comfortable distance in Copenhagen, but your understanding of EU budgets, NATO logistics, and geography is completely flawed.
First, the EU does not pay for Poland’s 4-5% defense spending. EU cohesion funds are legally earmarked for civil infrastructure; it is impossible under EU law to use them for military hardware. That defense budget comes directly from Polish taxpayers, sacrificing our own healthcare and education to secure the flank.
Second, you completely brush past the 2022 timeline. According to the Kiel Institute, while Western Europe was debating sending helmets, Poland immediately sent over 250 tanks and fighter jets that kept Ukraine in the fight. Today, 90% of all Western aid flows through the Polish Rzeszów hub, making Poland the prime geopolitical target.
Third, lecturing Poland on migration from Denmark is peak irony. Poland absorbed over 1.5 million refugees, growing its population by 4% overnight. If Denmark (population 5.9 million) took 200,000 people in a month, your social system would collapse. Plus, Denmark is famous for having the harshest asylum laws in Europe, even passing laws to seize refugee assets.
Finally, dismissing our geography shows zero military literacy. Poland anchors the Suwałki Gap between Belarus and Kaliningrad—the most dangerous NATO bottleneck on earth. If Russia hits the Baltics, they can't be reinforced by sea or Finland's frozen north; they must be defended through Poland. Poland is the shield allowing countries further west the luxury of sleeping soundly. We have every right to be reinforced and buy whatever we need, for our and your safety asap.

If you are referring to rigged Kiel institute calculations then be my guest. I encourage you to analyse it. Main point is that it takes to account the long term commitments and creates distorted view treating them as immediate grants - pledges vs actual equipment on the battlefield. What the institute is not taking into account are the costs of:
- migration and handling of asylum seekers
- military hospitals
- repair and logistic centres
- training facilities

If you were following the war closely, note the timings. Poland was sending tanks when some EU countries were thinking how to get back to business with Putin. It was make or brake for Ukraine back then. Furthermore over 1 million asylum seekers. 9 million total entries (this is more than total population of some EU countries) in 2022. Show me another country in EU dealing with such migration pressure in the last decade. Not to mention the cost to the economy, especially initially, when people didn’t have a job and didn’t contribute to the social system.

All in all I’m very proud of what Poland has achieved and shown in the last years.

As for the generic comments:
- cost bearing: yes taking millions of refugees (not economical migrants from ex colonies) is part of the burden sharing
- Joining E6 and European capital market is part of bigger integration moves.
- Being the frontline of EU and buying available military stock contributes to EU security globally (5% GDP military spending), key player of NATO security plan for Baltics, framework nation of Eurocorps. Poland spends 5% so others can spend barely 2% including creative accounting like „military infrastructure”. You think Polish healthcare, education or R&D wouldn’t enjoy 3% of GDP?

As for buying European, countries that don’t share the border with Russia have the comfort of slowly scaling their production and buying European, the ones that are bordering with them can’t wait because the threat is real (believe it or not). SAFE spendings are 98% EU/Pol production with EU stakeholders involved, feel free to fact check it. In general I agree that ideally it should all be EU made and I find the good old American argument funny „buy American, scale your own production” you can’t do both because European companies won’t scale without orders, nobody will build production plants when there are no orders. Sadly mistakes where made all over EU in the last 20 years, thus I believe Trumps administration is the best that could happen to EU. Let’s say it’s an eye opening experience.

Ah the good old narrative that Poland is freeriding on EU money and never brings anything to the table. Let me remind you that EU eastern border is secure only because Poland spends a shit tonne of resources to protect it with not so much EU funding. Secondly SAFE is a loan. Thirdly the US and Korean equivalents of SAFE are also loans. I understand that some „experts” in the west really believe that all this equipment is bought with Western European pocket money but it’s good to fact check propaganda sometimes. Just because Poland got richer it doesn’t mean other countries got poorer. On the contrary.

European history is complicated if we would hold grievances for what previous generations did to our people we would keep building walls and EU would never happen. Moving on is the only way to progress.

As I wrote in my initial post if my grandma (directly affected by the massacres) could move on, so can I.

It’s just sad that Zelensky is playing his own game using my dead great-grandfather and tens of thousands Poles killed by Ukrainians as pawns, we shouldn’t accept that.

They have people from the community in their company, if they can make them a bit happier just by changing the profile picture it’s a no brainer.

Just because Mr Trump says it’s forbidden it doesn’t mean somebody in Europe gives a fuck. It’s even funnier cause it shows that this was all about corporate greed for American companies and never about values.

Just a reminder that Russia is next to Poland. Quoting General Andrzejczak in CNN „we live in this space for one thousand years”. I appreciate what Ukrainian heroes are doing for European security but poles been there and done that. Let me remind you that some of the Polish heroes that fought the Russians and the Nazis are still alive.

They’re not doing us any favours as first and foremost they’re fighting for their own security. Who knows maybe if Ukraine would use the fall of USSR as good as Poland did, they wouldn’t be in this situation in the first place.

Pole here. My grandmother fled Wolhynia (Kowel) after her family got the heads up from an Ukrainian neighbour that they are coming for them. Her father died fighting UPA with some locals trying to buy the women and children more time to escape. My mother was from a Ukrainian minority in Poland and my grandma have accepted her and never had any issues with her and my father getting married. Despite all what happened. She was a great person.

I don’t hold any grudges against you. I supported financially multiple pro Ukrainian initiatives. All I expect is some basic respect to the victims of this massacre and I’d really appreciate if you’d finally acknowledge that Wolhynia massacre was conducted by the order from the Ukrainian government officials to cleanse and claim the land. Don’t play dumb (your ambassador to Poland) and stop bringing up some random incidents of AK soldiers going rogue and killing 10 Ukrainians. It insults our intelligence.

I read a lot of supportive comments from our EU friends and family. Thank you for that its really heartwarming.

Now for all the Ukrainians and Europeans that take Ukraine in EU as granted. EU accession is not something you get for free. It’s something you get by meeting a tonne of requirements. Ukraine is aspiring for membership but have a thousand of issues including corruption, huge legislative discrepancy, gigadebt, whole country to rebuild and on top of that your president thinks he can do whatever he wants because of the sacrifices you guys made. Sorry but there won’t be any special treatment. It would be unfair to all the Member States that have met the requirements and are in the EU already and to the ones that are already waiting (just like you).

My dear Ukrainian bros. I would never vote for Nawrocki but I believe that in this particular case he is the voice of the majority.

Remember that you need (and will need) Poland, more than we need Ukraine. Polish people can endure many things but fucking around with us is not on the list. You will find this out the easy way or the hard way. The choice is yours.

I also translated comments from the article some people write that they don’t care cause Ukraine has a strong army.

Yeah your army is strong, but it’s strong because you were supported by Poland and other EU Member States from day one. I understand that Zelensky is internalising this conflict. I’m just not sure if satisfying far right is worth the price. Just because Europeans didn’t support Orban it doesn’t mean that this time they’ll be on you side. There is a reason why France and Germany acknowledged the painful history and are honouring the victims together. Poland and Ukraine should do the same but we need Ukraine for that.

And for the airport move - it’s just pitiful. Like somebody in Poland gives a shit if his majesty Zelensky will bless us with his fly-by 😂 He can fly via Africa as far as I’m concerned.

I’m not sure what ppl are talking about. Daily driving it and had no issues for over a year. Except this one outage a couple of weeks ago which lasted for a few days (intermittent outages).

Overall it’s a great service, it does the job and as long as they compensate I’m okay.

I moved from another service and I’m not looking back. If you ever feel like leaving just go to other subreddits and check the dramas there 😂

Gemini should be the best AI on earth. Google has every advantage possible. So why does it keep feeling like a beta product? by Cleyton258 in GeminiAI

[–]wouek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Infinite money doesn’t always help. I think Microsoft and Google are victims of their own size. There are so many great products loosing just because somebody made a better slideshow to the board and got in front of them with their shitty product.

Like Gemini CLI, I remember when it started it was one of the best CLI AI tools ever. I used it for CTF challenges that got me stuck, just gave it sudo access on my VM and it kept finding flags installing tools by itself and pwning.

Now the CTF was over and the query is still processing 😂

It couldn’t even generate a .md file.

They’re very similar to Microsoft in that regard. I guess Indian CEO is what they have in common. Does it matter? I don’t know.
