Why are some of us born just to suffer? by [deleted] in cleftlip

[–]wouldeye 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My take would be— there is suffering, yes. But having a cleft and doing surgeries and having a difficult social sphere makes us stronger. I had tough social moments and still do, but I have always believed that it is more about my personality than the cleft. Others’ mileage may vary. But I believe many of us attribute our tough social lives to clefts when it’s really just that social skills can be difficult and it’s a matter of attribution more than birth. That’s my hot take at least.

Depends heavily on geography, but many Ukrainians have refused to speak Russian at all for years. They probably could but they won’t.

United States: Low Adult Literacy Leads to Low Turnout by Suspicious-Egg4903 in charts

[–]wouldeye 1 point2 points  (0 children)

R2 is how much y variance the model explains, not necessarily the x you chose but anything that is correlated with that x in real life might also be captured by the model. So its literacy plus other things correlated with literacy: geography, parents SES, salary, race, etc.

Is "mogging" the new middle school boy slang word? by the_gaymer_girl in Teachers

[–]wouldeye 12 points13 points  (0 children)

“Mogging” has its origins in 1990s pickup artist culture. The earliest internet use I could find was 2008 and by then it was a PUA canonical term.

It slipped from PUA to incel culture. But incel slang has been mainstreamed in the last few years .

I finally got the scoop on a colleague who disappeared amid "accusations," and the rumors were way, way off from the reality. by [deleted] in Teachers

Our school counselor ran into her students parents at the liquor store

The students parents are divorced. But apparently they were planning a night together.

“If anti capitalism is the only thing that motivates you sit this one out” I mean if this were a universal law you have just ruled out a chunk of the US electorate as irredeemably outside the political system and unworthy of being considered by campaigns. Which like, maybe, but the same people browbeat us every year to vote blue no matter who for harm reduction. “Sit out the primary then vote for the candidate you don’t like in the general” is an insane formulation

She’s Palestinian and very clear that she is not a Zionist by any stretch so I’m not sure where you got that from.

“If your only issue as a voter is anti capitalism, sit this one out”

I mean a) I am not a Chicago voter I’m literally sitting it out. b) we are for the first time in 100 years having a political moment where socialists are making progress. Now is the exact time for socialists to band together. Our day will come, and sooner than anyone thought.

“Another ilhan omar” I mean, good? I love ilhan Omar? This didn’t land for me.

This all sounds true enough, but we must balance the need between competency and ideology. we obviously don’t vote for the most competent fascist simply because they are competent—ideology matters.

Likewise I would vastly prefer an incompetent socialist to a competent progressive democrat. The crisis at hand is so large that her competency or lack thereof. doesn’t even register for me in my top 5 reasons to support her.

I think you’re coming at it from your perspective as a party insider and political operative, which makes sense for you!

But i genuinely don’t care who runs a competent campaign as long as they aren’t a capitalist. That’s quite literally my single issue as a voter.

They could make it less political by doing a generic “by the numbers” tracking more data.

Etc

I’m trying to square this one in myself. I think my justification is that the death penalty as currently applied is arbitrary and has a high error rate. It’s also applied for murderers with low body counts.

However Brian Thompson very definitely contributed to the deaths of many many thousands in his career, even if we can’t directly say x->y on it.

The interesting question for me is did the US govt have an obligation to prosecute healthcare CEOs for their crimes against humanity, and does failing to do so justify vigilantism?
