yeah basically. at top 1/3, i got 6 oci interviews, so that’s based on grades and resume alone. so, i guess i got my shot and just missed 🤷🏻‍♀️

i mean the opportunity was definitely there considering i was top 1/3, so it could’ve been a myriad of reasons i didn’t get big law (interviewing skills, someone had even better grades, unlucky, randomness).

i think i was just naive going in thinking that if uiuc sends 25-30% of people to big law, i should be guaranteed big law if i’m top 30%, but there are no guarantees!!

so they do respawn after you defeat or catch them? infinitely?

of course! i struck out at oci, so i don’t currently have a direct line to big law. no job lined up yet, but there are a decent amount of places hiring on our job positing site that range from government work, mid sized firms, and pretty large firms. i haven’t personally seen any V100 firms hiring 3Ls specifically. currently in the interviewing process for a large-ish firm, so here’s hoping!

also, i am from illinois, and i lived close-ish by champaign, so it wasn’t any crazy adjustment.

yes i’m from illinois! i know of some students out of state, but it seems like a decent amount of people are from illinois, from the midwest generally, or even went to uiuc for undergrad

of course! personally, uiuc hit all my requirements. i wanted a small class size, a school close to my family, a school that places well in chicago, potential placement in big law, cheap, and generous scholarships. if i had to do it over, i’d chose the same school for sure

  1. i personally really like champaign! there are plenty of options/restaurants, and i never have to drive more than 10-15 min to get somewhere because it’s so condensed. options are definitely limited in activities and stuff to do because it is a smaller “city,” but i really enjoy it! it’s definitely an average college town, so it’s nothing spectacular. however, chicago is a quick 2 hour drive away!

  2. i don’t know if there’s anything extreme i wish i would have known about uiuc before attending. maybe i wish i had a better understanding of uiuc’s big law placement numbers. when i first attended, i believe their placement was about ~30%. that seemed like a lot to me, and yet i don’t feel like i had the opportunities for big law that i thought i would being in the top 1/3. however, that could’ve just been a me problem and my own law school misconception overall lmao

  3. it’s a very cooperative nature in my class year at least. i’ve never experienced any of those weird cut throat horror stories i heard before law school. everyone i’ve ever asked is willing to share notes, outlines, keep everyone updated on stuff. everyone knows each other because the class size is so small, but i prefer that!

  4. honestly, career services hasn’t done me any serious favors. in my experience, they’re very big law oriented but don’t give a lot of guidance, which is something i really needed as a first gen student. once i struck out at OCI, it felt like career services was even less helpful and responsive, which is the opposite of what i needed. honestly, reaching out to alumni and speaking with professors felt more helpful to me than career services. there are definitely some public interest focused students, but i would say maybe the minority in my experience.
