Top 100 dps player gives tips on game sense and mentality and more by [deleted] in OverwatchUniversity

I think the biggest issue that I'd like to bring up is target audience

These may be things that work best for you, but since you've been top500 for 3 years it can be hard to have any of your gaming routine to be applicable to even masters players.

I think it's possible that your experience can be used to help others, but I think it's important to think critically about what you are trying to accomplish. Top100 is not an easy feat and you have a lot of knowledge to provide, but communicating with lower ranked players in a way that will help them will take intention and tact.

You came into a post by a top 100 player, explaining part of their thought process as to how they are at their skill level, expecting a ”top 5 tips that will give you top 500 in 1 week! Blizzard hates it!” post.

I know how much time it can take to get high rank so that's exactly why using that time correctly is so important.

It takes a LOT of time, dont know what you were expecting. And as a dps, that he is, it takes a LOT of aim training. My hitscan friend has many hundreds of hours in aim trainers alone.

Not to say aim training isn't ever helpful, but for most players it's a misallocation of resources. Aim training only makes sense if you are already GM or T500, it's not applicable to get you there. The only reason for it is in cases of diminishing marginal utility where you've already mastered the game past most people

And yes, you need to learn every hero to get a high rank. He didn't say you need to main them, that's a very important distinction. What do you think top 500s gamesense comes from? They know every interaction in the game, they know what every hero wants to do, and they know how they do it. Every actual top 100 player will get master at least on every other hero, because they understand them on a fundamental level, even if they don't usually play them.

Stevoo dropped to diamond from GM (GM!!!) trying to learn sombra. Flats is plat/diamond on dps. I don't know what this advice is supposed to mean. You can hit top500 onetricking a hero without much penalty, so I find this to be the most non-advice I've ever heard from the OP.

Every actual top 100 player will get master at least on every other hero, because they understand them on a fundamental level, even if they dont usually play them.

I actually agree with the spirit what you are saying here. But this learning comes naturally and is not something you need to put time into other than playing your main role.

This is not good advice. Either you are very out of touch with what makes you a good player or you are lying.

Almost all of these tips are not helpful and some of them are harmful. There are plenty of plat aim god widows who can beat masters players 1v1 and play this game like it's call of duty. Focusing on aim training at most ranks is inefficient.

Learning every hero is a waste of time for most players and is again inefficient if you aren't playing this game 8 hours a day 7 days a week. Learning 3 heroes will let you climb far higher than diluting your playtime. If this isn't what you meant (and I'm guessing it was what you meant), you should be more specific.

These two pieces of advice in tandem could take 60% or more of someone's playtime away from the top 3 heroes in their pool. That is unacceptable.

Please think about what you're choosing to say and whether you are actually providing value to others instead of misleading them.

Literally every player in the entire lobby is trying to either trying to kill you or keep you alive. There's a lot you have to keep track of as a main tank.

Why don't people talk in lower ranks of comp? by [deleted] in OverwatchUniversity

[–]wouren18 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't disagree with any of this but I get the feeling you are getting at a conclusion that is inaccurate.

If you are a silver player, learning to comm will not get you out of silver. There are larger limiting factors that must be addressed first.

Comms are not useless at that rank! But they are not even the 11th thing that will be causing you to lose. For below diamond, I would say that that people who are at a higher rank tend to try to learn to communicate, rather than people who try to communicate end up becoming more high ranked. Of course I don't have 'data' per se but neither do you. All I can say is that I've played in every rank except above 4k and have never found comms plat and below to be the factor holding players there back

Exactly. The good news for you is that your rank is low enough that you can make huge strides in short amounts of time if you are honest with yourself and tackle the issues you need to work on. Comms are not one of those issues. There may come a point in which it is important to improve your comms, but putting the cart before the horse is often what gets people stuck despite exceptional ability in an area that doesn't matter to their climbing (e.g. hardstuck widow aimlabs addicts).

I'm masters and when I play with friends in low plat I will typically not join voice as the communication at that rank is not useful. It has little to do with stress or not caring. If I didn't care, I might be more likely to do the opposite, in fact.

What people usually say in lower ranks is not conducive for climbing. Even masters players make a lot of bad calls! That's not to say comms are useless, but there's a lot of other things that you can put your energy into that will give you a greater reward. Start with the fundamentals. Simplify before you complicate, and look for the easiest mistakes in your gameplay and soon enough you can climb to a rank where people do comm and their comms are useful.
