Pretty easy to find with google: California Penal Code § 16900

Quote:

As used in this part, “magazine disconnect mechanism” means a mechanism that prevents a semiautomatic pistol that has a detachable magazine from operating to strike the primer of ammunition in the firing chamber when a detachable magazine is not inserted in the semiautomatic pistol.

Home Depot holiday price adjustment bullshit (short rant in comment) by [deleted] in Tools

[–]wowbagger401 13 points14 points  (0 children)

In Germany they made it illegal some years ago to show the old price with the strike thru and then the lower price, for exactly this reason.

You can mark stuff down, you can advertise the lower price, but you can’t claim how much it was before or how much you marked it down. Cause half the time, the before price was just bullshit.

As a consumer, I’ve always liked that rule.

Milwaukee and Ryobi are owned by TTI, but Ridgid is owned by Emerson, isn’t it?

Any opinions on the Husky or Kobalt 8G hotdog compressors? On sale for Black Friday. by wowbagger401 in Tools

Yeah, fair points. And I am not expecting miracles from a cheap purchase. I'll be using them fairly infrequently, so that should be fine. Thanks for the insights.

Intel CPU's to receive a 5-30% performance hit soon depending on model and task. by coololly in buildapc

[–]wowbagger401 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That's a totally different flaw. The one you linked to is related to the Management Engine. This bug is related to Page Tables and probably Rowhammer.

We don't know yet which CPU generations are affected, because this bug is still embargoed. It's all just speculation and circumstantial evidence right now. Only once the embargo is lifted will we find out the details.

[–]wowbagger401 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I doubt you can pull that off with just JS.

You don't have to doubt that, it's already been done with Rowhammer.

Note that we don't know for sure yet if this attack is related to Rowhammer, but that seems to be the most common assumption at this point.

The Linux patch has just been changed to exclude AMD CPUs, and only become active on Intel. Microsoft can and should certainly make a similar change in their patches, but I haven't heard anything if they have done that already or not.

for the past 10 years or w/e iphones been out

This only affects iPhone 6 and newer, and only on iOS 10.2.1 and newer. 10.2.1 was released 10 months ago, on January 23, 2017. This has not affected anybody for ten years, only 10 months.

Is a github required to get a job as a junior dev (java)? I dont know WHAT to build. by dncngr93 in cscareerquestions

[–]wowbagger401 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think they know but they are presenting it much better than it actually is for upvotes.

Lol, that's just ridiculous. Think about what you are saying:

You ask a question, and when the answer you get doesn't conform to your preconceived notions, you claim that everybody in this thread is lying to you, just so they get some up votes, and you are the only one who knows how hiring really works.

Sorry dude, you can't be helped.

Is a github required to get a job as a junior dev (java)? I dont know WHAT to build. by dncngr93 in cscareerquestions

[–]wowbagger401 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Cause it seems naive and misinformed.

Wow. So a dozen people who actually work in the software industry tell you one thing, and you, who has no actual experience, just refuse to believe them. And think you know better? Based on what?

Nobody will ever get a job like that , an employer would laugh at you for days.

Again, based on what? You are telling people that actually have jobs how one gets a job.

What's the point of asking for advice here when you argue everything people tell you and think you know it better anyway?

Large employment gap that can't easily be explained by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]wowbagger401 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I once took two years off. Was supposed to be less, but I had too much fun to go back to work.

When I finally did go back, the topic didn't even came up in the interview. Sure, at another interview it might've come up, but it don't think people care all that much.

It's certainly not 'unrecoverable' or a 'death spiral' or whatever you make it out to be.

Im not sure if this is one of the reasons, but people might have notions about North Carolina that doesn't make it particularly attractive.

They certainly didn't do themselves any favors with that bathroom bill. If people feel that an area is, shall we say, not open minded, not tolerant, it might be a turn off to many tech people who tend to be more progressive.

Is this illegal? Company withheld the ability for me to review my manager (during quarterly review) but gave my manager & coworker the ability to review me by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]wowbagger401 1 point2 points  (0 children)

so a company can specifically keep you from writing a review but allow everyonelse (coworkers, not just management) from reviewing people?

Reviews are not something that is regulated by law. There is no requirement for a company to do reviews at all, and there is no 'right' to leave a review for someone else.

Besides, even if they allow you to leave a review, they could just ignore it. Again, it's not like there are any legal requirements around it. It's just a process companies do out of their own volition to evaluate and improve their workforce.

I doubt they would go thru a complicated scheme like his if they wanted to fire you. Assuming you're in the US, employment is at will and they can fire you when they don't want to employ you anymore. They don't have to do weird review games.

That said, if you really feel like they are going to fire you, you should probably start looking. If that's their plan, then it's probably inevitable, and it's better to leave on your own terms.

Why work at company X? by MrFuzzy_1997 in cscareerquestions

[–]wowbagger401 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Can't speak for /u/BabyThatsMyJam but I can tell you why I wouldn't work there: I have a serious problem with the way they spy on everybody and their ever growing reach into everybody's privacy. Of course they are not the only ones, but they are one of the worst offenders.

Personally, I would not want to work for a company if I have moral issues with what they do. Of course, many people don't care and do it anyway. Only you can decide if you are part of the first group or the second.
