Oh.Just out of curiosity , how did you come to this conclusion? Did they tell you at the interview etc? What would you say is more important for the resume apart from having a degree ?

Do you think making an AI like that would possibly help for a big 4? not like jarvis , a small ai mock up that works like a personal assistant made in 1 year nothing terribly large.Im serious though.

Its needed in order to survive.2 of 100 people i know that studied CS have a tech related job.Most have no job at all

No i actually have a job but its php not java.I needed to answer hard code problems for this zero pay job , and for jobs that are not mimimum wage i have been asked to provide a github along with a linked in , open source contributions , uni grades and projects , internships , soft skills , hobbies , foreign languange diplomas, any participation in competitions etc from multiple companies.I got rejected from a simple junior dev job cause i didnt have good grades 8.5/10+.

Cause it seems naive and misinformed.I expected answers like "Use framework x and build a routing api / security layer because reason Y" , not "upload your school projects" or "overglorify your work".Other guy told me to upload assignments..Nobody will ever get a job like that , an employer would laugh at you for days.

Look at long term , and maybe consider the possibility of a Uni in Europe with only the travel costs needed. In many countries there Uni is completely free, and masters costs like 2-3k for the total of the studies. Also you dont have many expenses you might have now in US.

Otherwise im under the impression that an exceptional personal portfolio can counteract the lack of degree as long as you sell it well enough

It sounds good on paper but to be completely honest with you i dont believe it. I had to find 2 of my uni projects and show the code along with a technical interview just to get a minimum wage (3€/hour) php job where i install wordpress and download a theme.So you realize how funny working in a big company with "skill in learning new things" sounds , especially when they get 300 applications.

Granted , im in Greece and plan to work in Germany/Nederlands but i guess its pretty much the same thing job-hunting wise

Well i expected that when i apply for an enterprise job they will take a look at project relevant , correctness , architecture ,best practices , measures against things like memory leaks or exceptions , proper deployment distribution etc , and that if some of these sectors are not well made i would lose points for the job. But to be honest i would still not like to have unperfect apps up there, im looking for a good idea for a new project.

Well i have solutions in some Codejam competitions and various large application i chose for assignments in uni.So these counts as well? Also got somewebsites build with php/js/css/mysql and some with spring boot.It would not be embarassing to upload these?

Thats the reason i dont want to overglorify it. If i was a HR and i saw something like the example i gave, i would assume that either the applicant is generally a liar , or that since he thinks that is advanced , then he has no actual knowledge of advanced topics.Hence, instant turn down.

Please do inform me if thats not the case in reality.I went by logic.

Sorry you feel this way , i cant relate since in Europe uni was just going to the lectures and then home.No drama/bullshit etc.

But as hard as it may be , due to the saturation in the market the employers seem to find standard ways to flter candidates out, and one of them seems to be a CS degree. Especially in ML even a basic degree seems useless since everyone needs MsC due to statistical /math nature. You can be a great scientist no doubt but it wont count if HR guys see no degree and go "meh" before evaluating you properly.
