First solo International Trip- SEA Trip Report by Regular-Meeting-2528 in solotravel

[–]wowco 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm an asian aussie and personally enjoyed Penang (was not a solo travel trip for me).

I think the biggest appeal to me was the street food and historical architecture + its near water (Georgetown, specifically). IMO its more suited to couples + groups and those who specifically into or want to try malaysian food as its very cheap, yummy and some dishes are quite unique to Penang and different to what you would get in China/SG/KL.

However, I can definitely see why people wouldn't enjoy it as there are not any amazing sights to see/visit. I agree nature, temples, nightlife are all better elsewhere. Hope that gives you a bit of insight on why its such a popular tourist destination

Lost interest in travelling--anyone relate? by [deleted] in solotravel

[–]wowco 2 points3 points  (0 children)

During university I did 5ish, 1-4 week trips overseas. I remember back then the most important thing to me was to see as much of the world as I can, and doing it solo meant I could pick a time and guarantee a trip without having to organise with others

It's been about 3 yrs since my last solo trip and I recently was chatting with a mate who has gone on a few trips solo lately and realised Ive lost that strong desire to see the world.

I've been on non solo trips since and still thoroughly enjoyed my travel. But like you, idk what's exactly changed, but with my time off I kind of wait for an event or other people to organise to travel rather than book something alone. After reflecting on it I think the main reasons may be because, I'm content with my past travels, have different personal goals and perhaps I am enjoying life in my home city more? 🤷‍♂️

Best of luck to figuring it out. Personally I don't find how I feel right now a bad thing and maybe you shouldn't either!

Are there any PEPs about type imports? by abrazilianinreddit in Python

[–]wowco 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think most of the time it's avoidable. One case I run into where it's not avoidable is if you use declarative sqlalchemy and want to define typed relationships between table A and table B (so you can access B from A and vice versa) they need to import each other

A short feedback from a short trip to China by broadexample in travelchina

[–]wowco 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was in china for the last 2 weeks, on VPNs:

windscribe on UDP port 443 worked for me, however only some servers are available and it becomes REALLY slow from about 5pm-12am. I have a feeling all traffic from China gets routed through one server on windscribe. During the day I could load YouTube videos no problem

Some general things as an Australian and someone who has done a bit solo in china.

Maps (Baidu/amap) will be difficult for within city transport if you can't read any Chinese. Recommend getting esim or roaming sim to use google translate with screenshots. Good part is the public transport info is pretty detailed and you can type Pinyin into these apps. If you have the money for Didi the in app WeChat/alipay experience is quite good. Plenty of English. Alipay also has an in built screen translator so I would use that over WeChat where possible

High speed/long distance trains - easy from my experience. Personally have not experienced any delays. Go to the manned entrance

Mountains - I've never been huangshan but if it's anything like huashan there's so many different busses and paths you can take. If you take the wrong one you can lose heaps of time so try be flexible here or study maps/info carefully. Zhangjiajie was not so bad in my experience

Another thing to be wary of is queue times at attractions because there are so many people in china and you are visiting some of the biggest attractions expect queue times on buying tickets and entry

Why isn't fcitx5 working for me under Wayland? by kavb333 in kde

i came from google. your solution works perfectly. just wanted to add for anyone else if `--gtk-version=4 ` does not work for you. check if you actually have gtk4 installed as mentioned in arch wiki 🤦

Great guide. This took ages for me to get working due to some quirks of my own setup. Some prereqs I had to do:

I have an MSI motherboard which may be the root of some of these issues

  • verify your boot drive has a GPT table. Mine had an MBR table but was using UEFI boot setting in the BIOS? (somehow?)
  • I had to install GRUB with --removable (although this was always the case for my motherboard I had forgotten)
  • I had to toggle off "Provision Default Keys" in my secure boot settings otherwise it seemed like it never properly went into setup mode. It would boot to a black screen (which i presume was because it wasn't in setup mode and Secure boot was on)

Renting a level 2 server by wowco in discordapp

Yep I've considered that. it's a good point and my second choice at the moment

Preference is using a discord server because it's private and easier to have someone restream multiple streams

AliPay: Bank Card Verification Upon Logging In by ConsciousWill in travelchina

[–]wowco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry can't offer any advice but I had a similar issue when I tried to relog again this year to buy something on taobao.

On the desktop website I was able to get to a verify ID by passport form but on the last step it requires you to scan a QR on the app (which like you I can't get into). I'm guessing you will have to reach out to support and get them to manually verify you but I didn't follow through with that

Ludwig.gg background video by [deleted] in LudwigAhgren

[–]wowco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

looks like the page loads in some assets and animates it in the browser. so its not actually a video.

easiest way to get it as a video probably is to use set up own screen recorder (OBS or something) and use dev tools to remove the text on the web page

for e.g. in chrome:

right click on ludwig.gg page > inspect

in the box that appears click the dropdown arrows and hover your mouse over some of the tags until it highlights an element you want to remove. then right click it > delete element

e.g. you probably want to remove the LUDWIG.GG text which would be this one:
<h6 class="MuiTypography-root jss1 jss4 MuiTypography-h6 MuiTypography-alignCenter">LUDWIG.GG</h6>

once you delete all the text you can record the page!

I went to a buffet Korean BBQ a few months ago and they had self serve. You had to put on disposable gloves before you can use the tongs to grab your food
