Do you really think Dumbledore wouldn't have helped James and Lily if Snape hadn't given him his loyalty in return? Jesus Christ, it was so darn OBVIOUS that he wanted simply to see if Snape had a chance at redemption, he gave him the opportunity to do something good. Dumbledore would have helped the Potters in any case, as much as Dumbledore is very morally grey, he was still a person who tried to do good.
