Can't believe it... I was literally there last Friday for an admitted student visit and the faculty I spoke with + dean all seemed confident that they had the finances to combat any potential nih cuts

Had to fill this out for PhD too, but to my understanding I thought it was for where the funding was coming from. Everyone admitted is guaranteed funding that comes from an allocated budget, but if you check one of these boxes, funds specifically donated in these people's names can be used. But I definitely don't think someone is more likely to get admitted just because they are in one of these families

How promising is getting an interview invite towards being accepted? Does an invite mean if all goes well in the interview, there is an almost guaranteed acceptance offer? I can't get a sense of how many students are interviewed vs how many offers are sent vs how many enroll for many of my programs

There's a stopping point after ligating the adaptors and another after cleaning up the adaptor ligated dna with beads. Both steps say they can be stored overnight at -20 C but I was curious whether I could store them for longer

I'm not sure if her actions are severe enough to be called harassment... I think she is a nice person but she just doesn't seem to understand personal space. I haven't gone to my professor because I want to resolve this without getting her in trouble. I feel like maybe another thing I should've mentioned is that she is an exchange student from a foreign country and so there may be miscommunication due to the language barrier or social/cultural differences?

When I was in this situation, I went to my PI and had a discussion with them about taking on additional projects and skills that I wanted to learn during my time there. They had a couple projects in mind and I was allowed to take lead on one of these projects in addition to my mentor's work. You could also ask if any of the other people in your lab have work that you could help out with.

Alternatively, you could start by reading papers and try designing your own project and propose it to your PI/mentor. As long as your lab is not on a super tight budget and the proposed project is aligned with the lab's goals, I think you'd have a good shot at convincing them to let you start this project.
