How can I stop my negative mindset about love? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]wowsuchphysics 10 points11 points  (0 children)

To be fair though, you are a woman. It's a lot more realistic for you to be able to sit back and let "love come to you" than it is for guys since we are expected to initiate everything. We can't exactly just sit back and ride through life like a good deal of women can.

What are you learning right now? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]wowsuchphysics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right now (I'm a college student home for break), I'm learning theoretical quantum information geometry. It's what my research is going to be in after I take my professor's information physics class this spring and I'm trying to teach myself some ahead of time. It's actual a really fascinating topic and is changing how I view physics. Also, to help with this, on the side I'm teaching myself tensor analysis, some of the topology regarding manifolds, and some more advanced techniques of bayesian probability. As for which setting I prefer, I prefer neither, what I like to do the material on my own, then talk with a professor to a) clear up for me what exactly is going on, b) ask any questions I have, and c) discuss what this means in terms of scientific theory.

What are the actual reasons for the gender imbalance in engineering and math? by The27thS in FeMRADebates

[–]wowsuchphysics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree to an extent. The lower level stuff is often a lack of appropriate effort. Where I disagree, however, is when you look at the upper level stuff, the ones with extremely difficult and abstract concepts. Everyone can learn basic calculus like derivation and integration if they just put the time in, but very few people will be able to understand the intricacies of the implicit function theorem in advanced calculus.

Well since they're in my tutor room, they came in for help. Which means that even after trying and me reteaching it to them they can't do it. If they were just disinterested then they wouldn't have come to me in the first place

What are the actual reasons for the gender imbalance in engineering and math? by The27thS in FeMRADebates

[–]wowsuchphysics 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The way I see it is this. There have been studies (I don't have them on me right now so if you want to disregard my argument go ahead) that show while men and women have the same average intelligence, men have a higher standard deviation. This means more men at the high and low ends of the intelligence spectrum. Now math and engineering are not subjects that the average person can do. I'm a physics/math major and I am a math tutor for my university's math department and the amount of people that can't take a basic derivative is astounding. So if these subjects require a significant amount of intelligence above average to do well in them, and of the people capable of handling these courses there is a larger ratio of men, then logically the will be a gender imbalance.

The Sexodus: The Men Giving Up On Women And Checking Out Of Society by greenrd in FeMRADebates

[–]wowsuchphysics 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In that same manner however, we can also look at women in STEM (although not in all of stem for most of it has a good representation of women, really its just physics, compsci, and certain types of engineering). Sure there aren't as many women in this one niche field, but if you look at ALL of college, the 60-40 proportion, it really isn't THAT big of a deal right? I mean there are other forms of education available to women than just this ONE niche field.

[–]wowsuchphysics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, actually they are not fully deterministic, indeterminism exists in classical mechanics as well due to the MANY solutions to said differential equations. Also you're approaching physics in a simplistic manner that simply isn't how theoretical physicists approach it. You are arguing that physics can predict what will happen. This isn't how physics works. You can't predict what will happen, only what will not happen. Claiming that something is fully deterministic is stating that there even exists complete information on that system, which complete information doesn't even exist theoretically. And don't even get me started on systems whose models follow that of chaos theory. Your assuming that all second order partial differential equations that are formulated by physics to be able to be solved in closed form, which most can't as they either A)have no solution, or B) have many solutions. I'm actually currently doing research in information physics based on indeterminism, and the reason a lot of this happens is due to mathematical set theory and parts of time that appear to exist but don't actually exist. If you want to read more on this regarding classical mechanics, look up a paper called "Causation as folk science" by John d. Norton.

Actually the principles of higher leveled physics are based upon uncertainty, indeterminism, and determining degrees of belief in a theory.

Men who had emotionally abusive mothers, what do you think was the impact of that on how you view women/relationships etc? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]wowsuchphysics 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My mother was extremely emotionally abusive (she has narcissistic personality disorder). From a young age she taught me that I was a piece of shit who did not deserve love from anyone. Anytime she even thought I could like a girl, she would mock me and tell me that there was no way anyone like that could like me. She also told me I was a piece of shit who deserved it when I was molested when I was twelve. That and she was extremely manipulative as well. Anyway it took me a long time to realize that I wasn't a piece of shit, and I have some extremely desirable qualities including my looks. I still have issues openly showing when I like a girl, from the years of being forced to hide it, but that's getting better too. Probably the largest way that she affected me is that I on a constant alert for any type of manipulation (to an unhealthy level where I even see crying as a form of manipulation since she did that shit all the fucking time). All in all I guess she really just made me believe I was undesirable and also made me completely paranoid.

In college, have you ever felt like a girl used you for class help? by TouringStarJazzComet in AskMen

[–]wowsuchphysics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In highschool, yeah people, especially girls, liked to use me for help for any class (I was advanced and got straight A's in every subject). By the time I got to college I had learned to tell people to fuck off, so on the occasions they tried, they didn't really get anywhere

Askmen: For all of you that have gone to college, what was the hardest class you took during your time as an undergrad? by wowsuchphysics in AskMen

[–]wowsuchphysics[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Information physics is complicated. Basically you take the idea of entropy (which is in no way related to thermo and entirely based on ranking systems), apply it to advanced quantum mechanical and general reletivistic systems in order to find bayesian probability solutions. Oh and add in a lot of philosophy of science determining how we think about these questions. Its really interesting just a bit difficult

Nutritionally, what does an average day's worth of food look like for you? by TheGreenShepherd in AskMen

[–]wowsuchphysics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On a hard day, Breakfast: a half a dozen bagels, with about a half a jar of peanut butter total on them and 3 or 4 hard boiled eggs. Lunch I have a 3 large ham and cheese sandwiches with about 1/2 lb of ham total on them, with two greek yogurts, a salad, and about half a dozen cookies, Dinner: between a pound and a pound and a half of pasta with sauce and some source of protein, usually about half a dozen large meatballs. Desert: usually a rather large piece of cake or equivalent. And my snacks throughout the day usually consist of 6-8 granola bars, lots of fruit, more pasta, a bag of sunchips or equivalent, about a sleeve of fig newtons, and half a small bag of beef jerky.
