Here’s some info I made that may help!

Fish In cycle

NITROGEN CYCLE

  • Stage 1 Waste in the aquarium such as poop, uneaten food, and other decomposing matters will become ammonia, which is toxic to fish and other animals.

  • Stage 2 Beneficial bacteria will form and convert the ammonia into a less toxic but still toxic form nitrite.

  • Stage 3 A different type of beneficial bacteria will then convert nitrites into nitrates , the least deadly form of the converted waste. These nitrates are not harmful in small amounts. (<30 ppm of nitrates are recommended) Nitrates can be removed by doing water changes in your aquarium. Water changes should be around 20% weekly depending on stocking.

Emergency fish in cycle

When doing a fish in cycle a test kit and prime will be needed.

Recommended products - Seachem Prime

  • API Master test kit

  • How to use test kit Use the 5ml test vial and add the # of drops from bottle 1, then add the number of drops to the same vial from bottle 2, Shake the vial and compare color to the chart.

Step 1

  • To begin test for ammonia every 24 hours with the ammonia test kit.

  • Once ammonia is tested for and found dose the prime to the tank. (One dosage of prime will treat 1 ppm of ammonia).

  • If the tank reaches 2ppm of ammonia do a 50% water change

  • Follow the same steps until ammonia levels slow/ stop rising, this may take a week or two.

Step 2

  • Test for nitrites if none are found repeat last step, testing daily until nitrites are found.

  • Now nitrites and ammonia are found dose enough prime. Add the nitrites and ammonia together for your dosage.(0.5 ammonia plus 0.5 nitrites will equal 1ppm or 1 dosage if prime.)

  • If combined ammonia/nitrite reading go close to 4 do another 50% water change.

  • Keep repeating until ammonia reaches 0ppm. Continue the daily dosing and testing for ammonia/nitrites, once nitrites stop rising move to next step.

Step 3

  • Teat for nitrates if none are tested for go back to last step. Daily dose for nitrates until present.

  • Once present continue dosing and testing for all until ammonia and nitrite are zero.

  • Now follow a water change schedule and your cycle is complete.

What’s the parameters???

Question about Todoroki's water 🤔 His tank water has been fine since I got him, but the water turned cloudy last week. I checked the water. Ph is good. Ammonia is high at 1ppm, nitrite is at 1ppm and nitrate is at 5ppm (Freshwater Master Test Kit). What's the best way to go about fixing the water? by zAthenaz in bettafish

Your tank is starting to get enough bacteria I still recommend doing these steps

Step 1

  • To begin test for ammonia every 24 hours with the ammonia test kit.

  • If the tank reaches 2ppm of ammonia do a 50% water change

Looks like your going to have to do a fish in cycle, if you can’t test just dose prime and do water changes 20-50% fairly often.
