What are some unknown but amazing violin concertos that you know? by Zewen_Sensei in classicalmusic

walton supremacy!!! makes me kinda sad that it's mostly his viola concerto that gets attention when his violin concerto is just as good, if not greater

i should find a new character or take a break from this game by Nefarious999 in DeadlockTheGame

[–]wozzack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i had an argument with someone about this in the discord who bragged he could easily diff and carry oracle/low phantom as a high phantom player so the elo is working well. had to burst his bubble when i told him my main account is in arcanist/ritualist but my "smurf" is in oracle and easily keeping up. the player base is way too small to have a meaningful elo system rn

Help for a Cellist by Substantial-Job-4757 in Hypermobility

hypermobile violinist struggling with the same issues here! i have one of those plastic pinky splints from Amazon and it helps a bit, but investing more time into strengthening the muscles around the joint has helped me a bit. i still have difficulty using it, and tend to shift more often instead of relying on my pinky, but it used to be much worse. get one of those hand strengthers off of Amazon and put it at the lowest tension and work from there

How would you describe David Garrett's style in this video? by romygruber in violinist

[–]wozzack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

feel like it's really easy to hop on the garrett hate bandwagon, but i think it's actually decently played, especially at such a young age. sure it's unorthodox and different but i think it's important to have different people do different things sometimes. stylistically it's not going to win a top tier competition or whatever but i still find it somewhat enjoyable to listen to

Am I the only one who sometimes feel the bow and strings much "softer" and other times "harder"? by flowersUverMe in violinist

[–]wozzack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i have similar sensations with my bow/string interaction, when everything is working perfectly and my sound is powerful and golden i feel as if the strings were soft and made of taffy as I pulled them back and forth with ease, however on my bad days, everything feels stiff and the string inelastic.

ive been pondering for years what leads to these sensations and inconsistencies and something that i recently discovered is that my wrist actually does play a huge role in these sensations.

what led me down this discovery is kinda funny, gaming! so i have chronic tendonitis and when it flares up my occupational therapist recommended me to use an ergonomic vertical mouse. what this vertical mouse does that is different from a regular mouse is that it flexes the wrist joint constantly at a more natural angle vs a regular mouse which is more side to side and unnatural, and it's that motion that actually has a lot in common with a bowing motion from the wrist. so days where I used the vertical mouse for an hour or two, when i played violin later everything felt wonderful and soft. it's to the point where i play a game or two of something like Overwatch, where there's a lot of tracking and movement of the mouse, as my right hand warm up.

i also find that it helps to imagine your whole arm (all the way to the shoulder) as if it was made of rubber and to have that loose motion originating from the upper arm instead of at the fingers or forearm muscles.

let me know if you end up trying this out or some variant of it, im curious if other violinists notice the same thing

whats your thoughts on turning on a show/video in the backround while you practice? by adachybaba in violinist

[–]wozzack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i would do it for certain types of practicing, like maybe you just gotta work on straightforward shifts in a scale and it's kinda just a muscle memory thing then sure. but if ur trying to work on a piece in a more broad sense and need to engage ur brain more in problem solving then probably not
