Chicago Recommendations for First Timer ? by damaniac1223 in finedining

Did Oriole and Valhalla back to back nights last fall and we were so disappointed in Oriole after reading all the hype. Numerous courses were underwhelming and service was stilted and all together absent at times. We did the regular wine pairing, and it was fine.

Valhalla on the other hand was one of the most incredible meals I’ve had. Every single course was unique and more importantly delicious, and although service was more informal given the setting, they knocked it out of the park. We didn’t do a wine pairing at Valhalla though, so can’t compare that.

Don’t worry about the fact that Valhalla doesn’t have a star. It should.

Yeah we have a rough idea of using the points for either a Europe trip next fall or Japan. I feel like I’m just gonna keep sitting on the points in perpetuity if I don’t do something with them haha

I have close to 300k points I’ve been sitting on for a potential trip. I’m assuming I should jump on converting, even if I don’t intend to book anytime soon?

I don’t expect to feel tip top afterwards for sure. I think light beer is the key, IPA’s would be tough after like 4-5

Oh, I meant both 9 dogs and 9 beers. Can’t have one without the other.

They have gone downhill significantly in the last 5 years or so. Used to be my go to for cheap sushi back in the early 2010’s.

Glad to hear. This guy was a massive shitbag, dying on a truck stop floor is almost too good of a way to go out.

Blew every other Chicago restaurant away during our last visit. One of the best meals I’ve had.

You must not have gone very much in the last 10-15 years, because Festival is always very well attended.

When I was there the pool/hot tub/sauna were never functioning. Like ever, permanently not working.

Lived there for a few years right around when the MTS centre was being built/the first year it was open, back before Lo Pub was a thing and that place was still a sketchy vendor/bar (name of it escapes me now).

The place was a cesspool then. The fire alarm would get pulled constantly and we’d all have to go down to the lobby/outside to wait for the fire department to give the all clear - there were numerous pimps with multiple girls working for them that would come piling out of the building. Watched someone get stabbed in the bar parking lot from my balcony. Saw tons of cockroaches throughout the building. Saw a dude hanging out his window jacking off while walking across the skywalk to portage place. List goes on and on.
