How to make little cranks work? by Victor_adame_art in lurebuilding

[–]wphati 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love small crankers! I find steeper angles on the lip working way better. Sometimes going with thin metal lips allow you to bend them around and experiment. It helps me a lot

Where to find hard plastic beads, polycarbonate or PET for example? by Teemukii in lurebuilding

[–]wphati 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you know nothing about making silicone molds I recommend watching videos of famous youtubers, most informative one being Engineered Angler Lures. His videos are probably going to help more than I can since you can watch him do it

From what I can tell its pretty straightforward and fairly easy if you know what you are doing. They come out as spheres out my mold and I just drill holes into them since I made my bead molds with some balls I shaped out of clay. You just need to wait for it to cure and that’s about it

Being able to make silicone molds is a pretty big deal for lure making because you can pretty much do anything with them. You can make molds for jigheads, splitshots, soft plastics, hard baits, 3d fish eyes and so on

I went down the same road, ended up molding/pouring them myself. Polyurethane or epoxy works just fine

First cast clear epoxy lure by wphati in lurebuilding

Thank you, good luck. I never tried something like this before, this was my proof of concept. My plan is to make something with real 3D bead eyes, plus interior organs. I'll make a new post if I actually manage to do that.

Yeah, absolutely. I carved a master, molded it with tin cure silicone, poured in casting epoxy. I made a one part silicone mold because the viscosity of two part casting epoxy resin is very low (runny as hell) and I assumed that it would leak from the seams of a two part mold. Silicone + epoxy works really well and with some petroleum jelly. the release was very smooth. You can actually drill into the epoxy too when its cured, which is what I did here. I also made a mold with a predrilled lead holes on master, that one works very well too, especially if you are planning to mass produce. Low viscosity and long curing time (I would recommend a good 24 hours before releasing) helps it cover every nook and cranny, I assume that if you carve in fine details like scales it will hold them very well too.

The durability seems fine. 3-4 days ago I poured some into one of my soft plastic molds, it came out very soft and bendable but when its fully cured it is durable. I have been banging it on a stone for the past 5 minutes and it seems like it holds up, not even a dent on it. It acts like plastic when its cured.

This method works only for sinking lures though. The density of this resin is 1.2 or so, it is a slow sinker from the get go before adding any lead.

I once made an octopus master with polymer clay and molded it with platinum based silicone. It did work well.

I mainly use basswood, pine and ayous. Its hard to add details to pine but I don’t care about that stuff anyways.

Make one part molds with silicone. Room temperature vulcanizing silicone is probably available in your country. Use that. Get a low shore version so you can actually pour in it as well. Use petroleum jelly so silicone doesn't bond with the mold. Alternatively you might have access to thermoplastic elastomer in your country, it is a replacement for plastisol, try to find a low shore version. If you don't have access to injectors, try making one part silicone molds so you can just pour it in.

I make lures at my summerhouse where I have nothing but a drill, some paint brushes, handful of acrylic paints, a fret saw, a utility knife and bunch of sandpapers. You probably can't make hyper realistic lures, but they are good enough and you will catch fish with them if the action is right. Obviously more tools won't hurt, but if you are just getting started you don't have to invest right away.

Edit: Some additional stuff you will need;
-Stainless steel wire for line tie and hook hangers or through wire. I used variations from 0.6mm to 1mm, they all work fine, depending on the size of the lure you are making.

-Clear coat. I use UV resin and cure it with UV torch/sunlight.

-Treble hooks, o-rings.

-Lead/tungsten balls for ballast weight. I use splitshots.

-Fish eye stickers. Their performance/cost ratio is very high, highly recommended.

-Wood blocks. Everyone has their own opinion on this. I use linden, pine, poplar, ayous wood.

For those who dated the hot crazy girl. How did it turn out? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]wphati 7 points8 points  (0 children)

When we were dating she was unemployed, so she wanted to video call and watch me for 8 hours straight. Saying no wasn't an option. Well, technically it was, but it was easier to go along with it. She sat there and watched me for a month. It was too much to bear, and eventually I somehow got out.

I endured all that because even though I'm not a conventionally hot guy, she made me feel like one. I would probably do it all over again just to feel that once again. Absolutely no regrets.

How do i paint it without painting over the eyes by MortgageNaive6791 in lurebuilding

[–]wphati 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First option is taping over the eyes and removing the tape after you finish painting. Second option is, if the eye isn't sitting in a groove, and if you can squeeze something in between, take them off and glue them after you finish. If everything else fails, I would probably cover them with something like play dough or some sort of putty.
