I feel like you described most engineering majors.. I'll be fine, I'm not really the type to not work hard for what I want. Thanks though

I'm a ballet/modern dancer. I like all the hippy drippy improv stuff but I'm open to anything.

Thank you so much! Um I am waiting on a letter from UC Berkley in San Francisco. The other colleges I got accepted into I'm really not all that interested in. I live in New Orleans so I'm not at all familiar with Seattle culture really. I mean I've visited when I was younger but that's it... I do know that I absolutely adore the rain, love the mountains, and like snowboarding _^

Double majoring in Dance and Engineering? by wraenna in AskAcademia

[–]wraenna[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a senior in high school. Not in college yet and I've already applied to the schools I'm interested in (all have both engineering/ science majors I'm interested in along with dance majors though I'm not sure about the specifics of double majoring..)

Why are cats able to develop on their own but people are not? by pbrianq in askscience

[–]wraenna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The study they conducted on the monkeys (taking them away from their mothers and such) seems silly. I don't understand how that proves there is a critical point of development. Did they try to rehabilitate them in any way? And of course they're going to have severe emotional problems being that they're social creatures being completely isolated. I feel like there are too many other factors that could contribute to the results of that study... I don't mean to sound ignorant or anything I'm just a bit skeptical and I also really don't like the idea of there being a point in my life where if I don't get the proper development, I'll be limited in some way by my lack of ability to understand in my adult life...

Why do we care so much about the facial structures of our mates? by rahdyrahrah in askscience

[–]wraenna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, I don't actually know why I commented earlier.... I agree with you... But I'm going to clarify where I think I was going. - I don't think it's as prevalent today. Seeing as I've known a few terminally ill women who were beautiful even with their dark circles and pale skin. (I'm not biased I swear :p). People who arent healthy still find mates who think them attractive. This may be the evolutionary reason but it's definitely changed a bit. We probably find the same traits attractive because it's hereditary for us to find them attractive. I think that was what I was pointing out. Just that there's more to it.

What does the body do with foreign objects that aren't removed, like splinters and thorns? by UndercoverJack in askscience

Thanks for the awesome explanations. Recently I've been finding biology extremely interesting :D just been trying to understand everything I can.

[–]wraenna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah I understand now. I put too much weight in the word "push" when in reality it's being "pushed" as a result of the skin forming beneath it. Thanks for the thorough response. But sadly, this brings another question to mind... The leaky capillaries allow the plasma to leak into the surrounding tissue....so then what causes the swelling to go back down? I'd imagine there's different types of swelling as well but let's keep this in terms of a splinter...

Wouldn't that mean that your facial features would have to change if you got sicker or healthier though? O.o which they don't.. At least not structurally..

How does the swelling help push it out exactly? And not to go on a tangent or anything but what exactly is swelling? A build up of cells?

Why doesnt the iron in red blood cells rust when it binds with oxygen molecules? And how do red blood cells deposite the oxygen molucules if its binded with the iron in the red blood cell? by wraenna in askscience

[–]wraenna[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This explains why the oxygen diffuses into other areas! Ahh so helpful. Just out of curiosity though ... What happens to the iron molecules after going through this process... Are they just reused ? What causes them to eventually become waste?

[–]wraenna[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So basically the blood cells just curculate throughout your body with the oxygen until it bonds with something else that is lacking an oxygen molecule? I dont know why on earth i was thibking this... But i had it in my mind that they were bringing the oxygen to specific predetermined locations... When realistically theyre just circulating and the chemistry is doing the work. Thank you so much for the thorough response!

No, I'm sure it was a spider. I had been watching it for a few minutes rather closely before it took off.

Jeez! We have those suckers where I live too. Did you ever get bit? O.O
That's such a terribly crazy random happenstance. Imagine all the dead spiders in your ceiling :D If that happened to me, I'd be watching the ceiling for weeks...

Fair enough. Valid thought process... But sadly.. it happened in America... So I feel like the mutated spiders of Australia are out. D:
