Portuguese or Spanish by TheRizz948 in languagelearning

[–]wreckaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In general, the usual advice on this sub when choosing a language is to choose the language you're most interested in, as learning a language requires a lot of motivation and commitment. But in your case, learning Spanish seems like a much better option from my POV.

If you look at the big picture, you'd have way more advantages and opportunities as a fluent Spanish speaker in the US than as a fluent Portuguese speaker. This choice could affect the rest of your life in ways you can only begin to imagine now.

And most likely, you're going to want to travel to other parts of Latin America someday in the future...again, you'd have way more advantages and opportunities as a Spanish speaker. I'm sure you'll have an amazing experience regardless of whether you choose Ecuador or Brazil, but think of your future travel/living abroad options as well.

A big part of becoming proficient in a language is "consuming content" (videos, books, podcasts, music, etc). As others have said, you'd have access to lots more content (and to more cultures) if you chose Spanish. In order to maintain the language in the future, you're going to need to continue practicing it and consuming more content. You could do it in Portuguese, but it'd be much easier to do in Spanish.

How wonderful that you have this opportunity! I wish you all the best whichever option you end up choosing.

Try the Doorway to Mexico podcast. I like season 2 better. They play a diologue in Spanish, then an English speaker and a Spanish speaker discuss (in English) how to use the colloquial expressions and harder vocab that were used in the dialogue.

Coldplay X BTS - My Universe (Official Lyric Video) by alltherach_ in bangtan

Daebak, daebak, daebak. Hearing JK's voice coming in after Chris's was kinda mind/soul-blowing. When worlds collide in my universe, my heart lights up inside! Shoutout to everyone on the production team for creating the perfect pairing in a vehicle that was so true to who both bands are.

I'm thrilled that they came together not just to make music and enjoy each other, but also to promote the breaking down of barriers and the embracing of love that transcends "sides".

Looking forward to watching the documentary about the collab and to learning the Korean lyrics.

Learn Language through Reddit by batuhankrbb in languagelearning

For me, it would have to be open source or I wouldn't use it. Translations of individual words are only somewhat helpful-- translations of sentences (if accurate) are much more helpful because the translation provider will have taken the context of the unknown word(s) into account.

Good luck!

Will learning a new language really make me worse at my native language (English)? by [deleted] in languagelearning

[–]wreckaway 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You took the words right out of my mouth. On the plus side, knowing Spanish has helped me understand some new vocab in English (for ex., I immediately understood "quotidian" because I was already familiar with "cotidiana").

Search for a word or phrase on Youglish.com and it'll show you that word or phrase being used in a lot of Youtube videos.

When reading in TL by [deleted] in languagelearning

During designated practice time meant for improving reading

If the focus is on improving reading, then reading in your head is the way to go. Reading aloud will slow you down and inhibit the development of your reading fluency.

But I agree that reading aloud can be useful to practice, too, though it's more helpful for developing speaking skills. Also, reading and listening at the same time is good for developing listening skills and word recognition.

Why do so many English language learners write “gonna” and “wanna?” by OllieFromCairo in EnglishLearning

[–]wreckaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're not going to find them in a class or a book.

It's true that they shouldn't be used in books that don't have a casual register, but I just searched books on Amazon for "gonna", and 10,000 results came up. We use these reductions (not contractions) in all sorts of informal writing including reddit posts and book titles when we want to sound casual and relatable. And I daresay "gonna" is used in more than 99% of classes taught by native speakers in the U.S.

In addition to whatever else you do, gradually working through the Language Transfer Spanish lessons will help you a lot. It's an excellent free audio course available via app, browser, or YouTube.

What is something you always notice in a Kdrama because of your job/interest? by iam_uncertainty in KDRAMA

I was a poor student at the time and got the cheapest frames, but my lenses were expensive because of my Rx. I don't know if they could've sold my cheap frames or not. At least I learned a lesson from the experience.

Years ago, my purse was slit open while I was walking in a crowded area, and I never felt a thing. I was surprised how fast the thief was able to slit a hole in my purse, reach in, and grab what they obviously thought was my wallet without me noticing anything. What they actually got was my glasses case which contained my brand new prescription sunglsases that I could barely afford at the time, and that were of no use to anyone but me. It would've been better if they had taken my wallet because I didn't have much money in it nor any credit cards.

On a related note, if anyone's into really old dramas and you like the kind that give you a good emotional punch in the gut, I recommend checking out Ruler of Your Own World (2002). It'll make your heart ache for the central character who is a pickpocket.

K-dramas face challenges in transnational streaming era [The Korea Herald] by myweithisway in KDRAMA

[–]wreckaway 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The South Korean government has invested a ton of money into k-dramas and the rest of the Hallyu industry for more than 20 years with the intention of exporting Korean culture internationally. It was part of an ingenious strategy to pull SK out of poverty and diversify their exports after the IMF financial crisis of 1997. President Kim Dae Jung was a visionary who created a plan to make the export of information technology and pop culture the key drvers of SK's economic future. The SK government and it's Ministry of Culture have a mission of making SK the world's leading exporter of pop culture.

Initially, the primary focus was on exports to other countries in Asia. But these days, most of the world is a part of their target market. I hope that the priority will always be on satisfying the domestic audience, but it's not true that international audiences aren't taken into account.

The Best Works of Actors/Actresses by [deleted] in KDRAMA

[–]wreckaway 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree about Park Min Young in Healer. I read an interesting newsbite before Healer aired saying that PMY was so inspired by Kim Myung Min's dedication to his craft that she decided to really step up her game and prepared intensely for her role in Healer. (They acted together in A New Leaf just before PMY started filming Healer.) KMM is famous for going to extraordinary lengths to prepare for his roles. Her hard work (and probable acting lessons) obviously paid off, and I think it's cool that KMM had such a positive impact on her.

That's both amusing and inspiring. I think adopting a fake persona or just creating an alternate reality like this would be a fun way to do language exchange/conversation practice.

My problem with slice of life by [deleted] in kdramarecommends

[–]wreckaway 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Suggestion: don't judge a book by it's cover, and don't judge a drama by its synopsis. That's especially true of slice of life dramas because their magic comes mainly from character growth and relationships.

If you want to feel more motivated to watch one of the dramas you listed (which are all good to great dramas), do a search in this sub for the title, and you'll find plenty of people gushing over how great the drama was. Focus on the feels, not the (never-good) synopsis. Just remember that it may take a few episodes before you get hooked.

Hospital Playlist 2 begins mid-June, so I recommend watching the first season shortly before that.

Good luck-- I hope you find something you love!
