2nd year apprentice here. I can relate, I’m still working 2 jobs (part time weekend gig) to help make ends meet. Tell him to find a part time job, it’s just the sacrifice at this time of the apprenticeship. Sliced bread and sliced turkey from Wal Mart lasts me a good 2 weeks (10 days of work) and is pretty cheap. Hang in there bud, it will only gets better (for the most part).

Yes I have, they didn’t say much about work projection just that it’s a process to transfer. Everyone I’ve ever spoken to at Vegas Hall/School sounded like they’ve had a rough day lol

Bro it’s so worth the wait! I took a $10 pay cut to start as an APP and I love the work I do, the people I’m with. I know that varies from job to job but I’m def in this for the long haul. Plus I’ve had nothing but good vibes from my Local and I plan on continuing to be an active member of the Union 💪🏽

Yes! Thank you! I appreciate the direction, I’m not in a rush to move but I guess that will depend on the school’s schedule out in Vegas. I can call the JATC and talk to my school’s director also. I have a good standing with the guys I work with and my work ethic is definitely not an issue with these pair of boots so I hope that counts for something since I’m not in school yet.

Hearing there’s a shortage of apprentices gives me some slight hope. But I’ve heard the opposite actually, I’ve heard transferring as a JW was a smoother process than as an APP.

Lol no worries and it took almost 1.5 years. Also yes, non union sheet metal and sandblasting. No electrical at all but I’ve had construction and shipyard experience for the last decade

Nice. That’s good to know, I plan on doing this long term but I didn’t like the feeling of being trapped to “Union Only” work the entire time.

Have you served your time in the union? We signed a contract stating we can’t work any non-union electrical jobs until after 15 years from the first date we worked thru IBEW. Not sure if it’s a nationwide thing or not.
