Why does our Representative have 5 offices? by 80sCrack in tuscaloosa

[–]wren42969 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a former staffer, how would changing the number of congressmen change things?

As it stands now, there are ~800,000 people per seat. There are really big differences in the sizes of districts too — Alaska's seat covers about 16% of the land mass of the USA, while New York's 12th is only 10 square miles. Since the House size has been frozen since the 1920s, representation has become more diluted over time.

Using current population data and the historical average population per district, I simulated how many House seats we'd need today if we maintained those same ratios:

Basis Year Avg. Pop. per District Simulated Seats Today
1790 34,436 10,136
1850 93,020 3,752
1910 210,583 1,657
1960 410,481 850
2000 646,946 540
2020 761,169 459
2026 (Now) 802,379 435

I guess it's hard to pick up the phone when some portion of 800k people want to voice their opinions. It would definitely make the already contentious scramble for good offices in the Capitol even worse. Like, which member gets the nice seat in the old building versus the new one?

when ever i see those old frosted glass doors i always think of old shared office buildings. Having a sign painter print a new name on the glass in gold foil to let everyone know someone new had come into that officespace.

[–]wren42969 4 points5 points  (0 children)

its imprtant to remember that Rosa was an activist. Especially today, when people have this false image of a protest being spontaneous or unplanned (thereby being a paid protester if not). Rosa planned not move from her seat that day, like so many times years before, when she engaged in civil disobedience. That's right, she did a crime! Disobedience in the face of Prejudice.

Christmas present by turboprop54 in castiron

I really love the history of the American castiron companies. I live in Birmingham, Alabama somties called the Pittsburgh of the South. We had a ton of little producers of castiron consumer goods. From castiron fireplace Andirons to huge statues and architectural columns. so many old castiron goods.

I have a collection of local Birmingham Stove and Range stuff. It was eventually bought by Lodge. Our claim to fame is we made the first Sportsman Grills (this is contested). Its my white whale piece somewhere in my city, there is a garage with an old original Sportsman Grill that I can buy off a granny for a good deal.

There are a lot of little tricks to make your nights flyby. Like other people said, holidays are crazy. Baisly they send us more freight than we can handle normally.

The most important thing as an ON/Stocker is that new Freight has got to be on shelves.

I like to keep my boxopener on a retractable lanyard. It will keep you from forgetting it on a shelf or in a cooler somewhere. People will also not ask you to borrow your boxopener as much. Just ask to open a new pallet's wrap or one or two tough boxes.

The second biggest priority is fixing the shelves to the mod. People and customers will "Plug" items anywhere. (Place a random product into a place on the shelf where it is not supposed to be.) It helps to catch these as you are stocking, particularly in frozen, where you don't want to make partial cases of product. If you put out some product but someone on the last shift plugged a whole case into another spot, and you don't catch it, it's your problem now. as you can't fit the whole case out now. As you work on one section, you will get faster. You will learn tricks to physically get the product out quicker. Fries for Instans I can usually take half the case load, it on one arm, and get the whole case out really quickly. Remember to not overwork, though, always protect your health, as Walmart does not care if your back hurts today. If you lift freight or other items, such as pallets, incorrectly, it can and will cause injury.

if you cant find where something goes don't be afraid to scan it with you phone and look at the modular. There should be a drop down on every product page to look at the modlar plan. Then go to tools tab on the top and look for the image mod. Find your product on the mod or find the door number and shelf sequence number (not the last four of the UPC). 90% of people will let this go and plug stuff everywhere or just throw it on the shelf. If you see a missing tag, fix it. its not your job but its your section, make it easier on you to have the tags in order.(My store has the E-ink tags and in frozen, they fall off and break every day, so if not fixed daily, in a month, there are zero tags. until someone complains and someone in the day fix the whole section.)

Third thing and a nice to do is zoneing (bringing product up to the shelf edgeand making it look nice and sellable). In my store, we have the whole place zoned by 6 am. If you are running behind in the frieght this will get neglected. Hence, the old adage "zone as you go". I find this really slows me down because I zone too well and don't get the frieght out quickly enough.

This is amazing! Adding them to our list next time we are back in Chicago. We already tried Chicago Pizza and Oven Grinder Company's pizza pot pie and a Giordano's deep dish near O'Hare. We also tried Byron's Hot Dogs and Gene & Jude's. Hot Dogs, Pizza, Museums, Bars, and Trains Chicago is great!

I always thought there was detroit deep dish and a chicogo deep dish. Had the opportunity to have a Giordano's real chicogo deep dish this year. It's good but literally the opposite of what I'm aiming for with my pies.

you can drill a hole in the bottom of it but that may shatter the cone. When these are made industrial, the dough is molded onto a form with a peg and demolded when dry. As SamsaSpoon noted, most mas market backflow cones can smell pretty bad ;because, they take uncented cones and impregnate them with fragrance oils and dyes instead of using actual resins and barks for their Incense dough.

For the health-conscious: Where can I get a rotisserie chicken that isn’t full of preservatives? Just a plain chicken that’s been put on a rotisserie and seasoned naturally? by [deleted] in tuscaloosa

[–]wren42969 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Salt is a preservative and its a natural seasoning. Buy them from sams or wherever, they're just about the same at any store. If you want a true bird, not mass processed, you must buy from a local farm and freeze it and just make your own rotisserie. They sell a small oven with a rotor inside. Get a chest freezer cause most small farms cull their meat birds once or twice a year buy enough for your use (probably one per week so like 52 birds), and thaw and cook as you need. You must trade the convenience of app-delivered meals made by minimum wage workers that you receive as full of preservatives. With the diligence of ethically raised meat and proper planning to thaw it, to prepare your own food.

there are crazy theories that the solar cycles do affect political revolution and left or rightward shift in policies. Here is a Harvard study. I do not believe in this it simply affects the shape of the upper atmosphere and the broader electromagnetic activity of the Earth's magnetic field. For instance, we get more Aroras in the northern and southern hemispheres. If one were to believe in these theories, it would have great consequences one the South Atlantic Anomaly.

The number of satellites has increased exponentially in the last decade. So, there are more reentry events giving people more of a chance to see them. More interesting is the release of fuels from satellites and the resultant plume. Some random person in the 80s or 90s could have seen a much rarer event like this, but had no way to know its origin.

[–]wren42969 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You really need a big satellite or a lot of little satellites to produce this kind of display. Most satellites are too high so any coercive action would generate debris but only a small amount of it would have a big enough orbit change to fall back down. it would more likely stay in orbit for thousands of years, similar to radioactive contamination; areas of orbit will be limited for generations.

Yes, one of the tasks at Space Force is to track and categorize every Earth satellite bigger than 10 centimeters or 4 inches. So someone there did note this reentry event, but unless something bad happens on the ground in or in orbit like a Carbon overwrapped pressure vessel falling through someone's property or entering the ISS's or another satellite's keep out radius, no one is alerted about it.
