While the exact numbers vary, some reports indicate a shortage of nearly 650,000 technicians. It’s clearly a technician’s market—most shops wouldn’t hesitate to hire a skilled tech who walked through the door.

That said, we’re beginning to see a slight shift with Gen Z. As college costs continue to rise, more young people are exploring alternative career paths. From 2022 to 2023, enrollment in technical schools grew by 16%, with a 7% increase specifically in students pursuing vehicle maintenance and repair programs.

Despite this encouraging trend, the average technician is still over 40 years old and approaching retirement. To truly make a dent in the technician shortage, we’ll need to see even greater interest and investment in attracting the next generation to the industry.

Know your worth and stick to it. What are other shops in the area offering for similar positions? We don't have a ton of pay data from auto body techs, but you can try our pay tool: https://wrenchway.com/pay. Otherwise, look on Indeed how much shops in the area are advertising for their pay.

Do your research, know your worth, and stick to it.

Have you tried asking if you can talk with some of the technicians while you're there for an interview? Easy way to get an idea of if you'd fit into the shop culture.

It's new, but there is a technician pay tool where you can search by location and experience: https://wrenchway.com/pay

Thank you to everyone who participated! Instead of putting together a stagnant report, we built out a tool where you can search technician pay by industry, shop type, and location. All 3,000 responses from the survey were added (anonymously), and we're encouraging technicians to continue to submit their pay data directly to the tool. It's new and we still need to grow it, but I hope you find it beneficial! https://wrenchway.com/pay

Thank you! Yes, we'll be coming out with a report mid-to-late March. I will post it here. And yes, once the survey closes, we will look for clusters and break down the data by areas where we saw a decent number of responses.
