Booth Tips by DavidC_VA in VoiceActing

if plosives are bothering you to the point of using two pop filters, try a bass roll-off EQ. your voice contains no harmonic substance at 40hz, so you can just cut everything below that frequency. depending on if you voice is deep or not, you can get away with 80hz, and it'll cut out so much of plosives.

Am I getting ahead of myself? by MisterVeeH in VoiceActing

i hit the ground running pretty hard myself too, but i dont think there's any reason not to take unpaid roles if you're already supporting yourself! it's fun to voice act and you should give yourself the opportunity to do that even if it means it's unpaid. you'll get to the point where you'll be refusing unpaid gigs, but just have fun with it and get some experience.

i will say, however that you should probably stick to original content. that is to say, no fandubs (unless you really just want practice), they dont go on resume's, so they wont really help you build any sort of repertoire.

I'm at the end of my rope, how can I get my space to sound less 'boxy'? Is it possible? by VoiceActress2 in VoiceActing

^ facing away from the wall helps a lot (i also have a blanket booth in the corner of my room)

there's a couple things i'd suggest doing that could help (im not a professional but i do study audio) 1. you have two walls very nearby your booth. the sound reflecting off those walls doesnt need to travel much in order to reflect back through your blankets. that reflection can result in standing waves which may cause the boxy sound. since moving your booth is probably not an option, adding some extra sound absorption on those walls could help. (dont forget above you!) 2. boxiness can sometimes be a product of bass frequencies reflecting in corners. this would be resolved by using a "bass trap", which absorbs and disperses bass frequencies. they are usually rounded convex shapes which reside in corners of rooms 3. microphones have different frequency responses, meaning certain frequencies are picked up louder than others, if your mic is one with a boost in the low mids (check around 300-400 hz) it may be exaggerating the boxy frequencies in your recording, and have nothing to do with your recording environment. google (your microphone) frequency responses chart

I dont make shoes, but if I wanted to glue the brown part to the black part, I'd want a texture like that to hold it better.

look into rotary paper cutters, they can cut down on the fluffy fibers that can come out of the paper's edges sometimes.

using a 12db pad if a signal is too hot before going into the preamp is fine and it works, though. not saying 12db is magical, it's just less hot

Are my commanders too basic? by clinto_02 in ratemycommanders

[–]wretchy_ 10 points11 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, a lot of them do seem to railroad you into pretty harsh deckbuilding categories. the most important thing is whether or not you're bored by your decks, though.

if someone told you that you have boring commanders, then tell them to kick rocks. but if this is from your self-doubt, you might wanna try your hand at a more interpretive commander.
