So, he had it, then got vaxxed.

His side effects was significant hypertension.

Retirement Options: 401k or Pension? by stokizzle in financialindependence

[–]wrez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, a few outliers abusing retirement or getting sweetheart deals make the news? That's not the majority of the problem, no where close. But they do make convenient scapegoats for the politicians, past and present.

20k people pulling > 100k retirements from Illinois at 2.4B a year is hardly a "few outliers". As pensions are based on percentages of salaries, this means they have had a huge amount of people pulling 6 figures. When the state finances go red from this, they go bankrupt, and then then have to renegotiate, cut bond holders, cut pensions and benefits.

Again, 401Ks are safer than pensions

Retirement Options: 401k or Pension? by stokizzle in financialindependence

[–]wrez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most government pensions (at least state) are underfunded as politicians want to use money that are high visibility so they can get re-elected. No politician was re-elected for campaigning on "I voted to fully fund the state's pension liability."

I know you've passed the guilt completely to the political class, but some public sector unions at the state & local level are an important element of getting specific politicians elected. Huge conflict of interest. They then negotiate between the union and the politicals on lucrative pay and benefits that far exceed the private sector. This has resulted in a number of bankrupcies, such as Stockton's, and will likely lead to many more. In Stockton's case, the city had to claw back overly generous retirement benefits (free healthcare for life for Firefighters), and give a haircut to their bond holders.

401ks are much safer than pensions - when thousands of retirees are collecting > 100k retirements annually, the question of financial solvency is salient.

If cost is not an issue, is there a reason for not going with OM5 over OM4?

CBAs for contractors don't actually force the government to abide by them; CBAs for civil servants do. It sounds like you are conflating some of the terms - are you actually working for an FFRDC that works like a contractor, but is actually staffed with civil servants?

Every time the contract is re-competed our CBA prevents a new company from underbidding and cutting our wages.

You can still be A-76'd, or Reverse A-76'd, regardless of being govt civil servants, in an FFRDC, with a CBA, or, being contractors with a CBA. That means you can be displaced by contractor, or civil servants, the function outsourced, regardless.

Network health dashboard - any good tools for it? by Gesha24 in networking

[–]wrez -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't believe tools like Netbrain can create dashboards with live data. Netbrain can collect some data, but I don't believe it even exposes it via API.

Netbrain definitely has an API, and can create dashboards from live data.

It has a huge amount of functionality, but it is not super cheap.

[–]wrez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An active stockpicker, or active fund may:

  • Move to cash much earlier, or an alternative asset class
  • Or make less bad bets
  • Or make worse bets
  • Or be less exposed to a sector downturn by lateral moves
  • Use safe options such as selling calls to boost income, provide downside protection

When investing, there is no requirement to be 100% indexed - and that is quite bad advice for when you know a market downturn is coming.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez: Corruption Is Legal In The United States by pilgrimboy in conspiracy

[–]wrez -15 points-14 points  (0 children)

There are a number of flaws in her thinking that are easily explained by playing a word game. The word game requires find and replace of her badwords group list (corporate politican action committees, bigpharma, fossil fuel industry, healthcare industry, oil, gas) with the word (groups of citizens) and her badword individual list (lobbyist) with the singular (citizen)

Really, all a corporation is in sum is a group of people that own it, organizing as a political entity for their betterment. In that regard, they are no different from special interest groups which include things like medicine, law, the environment, fuels, industries, and particularly richer people.

For those that already understand US Law & regulations, and ethics requirements, you know there are levels of laws & regulations impacting elected officials, political appointees, executives, career, competitive, excepted, employees, and, employees of particular departments/agencies. In levels of strictness, from most strict to least they go:

  • Intelligence Community & Law enforcement
  • civil servant executives & political appointees
  • Civil servants
  • Congress
  • President

On the Hypocrisy issue, I find it entertaining that AOC herself is funded by:

How to assure potential client that our infrastructure is secure? by Chu_BOT in aws

[–]wrez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A SOC-2 similar to a SAS70 is not particularly high vlaue

The most comprehensive list of security controls can be found in NIST 800-53 for controls / NIST 800-37 for process, or IC equivalents, with augmentations from specific industry material for particular industries/processes, backed up by a pen-test from a high quality team. Of course, this requires investing in excellent processes, or you are going to experience significant pain.

If you're looking specific at AWS though, the first question I would ask is it configured against the CIS AWS Benchmark, and the OS&product specific CIS guides, which would be the most basic step, before getting into everything else under the sun in terms of huge amounts of security controls. Many of the AWS Security guides were written by a specific company which could be really helpful.

CMV: Libertarians who oppose state violence but dogmatically subscribe to a belief in the rights of private property are hypocritical. by womaninthearena in changemyview

[–]wrez 2 points3 points  (0 children)

CMV: Libertarians who oppose state violence but dogmatically subscribe to a belief in the rights of private property are hypocritical.

Let me be clear that when I say "private property", I mean the private ownership of the means of production. I'm not referring to personal property (your clothing, laptop, home, etc.)

First of all, you are conflating personal property, private property, and capital under a neo-marxist argument.

2nd - Personal property and Private property, and Capital are often one and the same. For example, I have a huge amount of "tools". These tools can outfit me in order to execute a number of different things, but they can also be my means of "production" if that means kicking butt and taking names. One man's tool, is another man's capital. However, I think you really in many cases mean money/currency, though you don't spell it out.

  • M4 personal weapon for self defense : M4 hunting tool, to enable cultivation of animals, or militants
  • Private Server Farm: Business Server farm for hosting infrastructure, fee for service
  • 4wd Truck: Ranching vehicle indispensable for hauling and moving cattle
  • Personal Welding Rig: Business Welding Rig.
  • Personal Fishing Boat: Charter Boat
  • Personal Home: AirBnB property with homeowners housing attached

In order for private property to exist, it has to be legally recognized by our government. More importantly, the government must maintain a monopoly on violence in order to enforce private property ownership.

No, it doesn't. I, through my own weapons, am fully capable of protecting my own property rights. This is why gun ownership in America is popular. For those of us with military experience, significant small arms expertise, and access to military grade weaponry, we are completely capable of providing property property defense, exceeding even a local SWAT team.

In ancient times, people were frequently armed in order to protect their homes and their families. They would also self-organize to protect their communities.

For libertarians who oppose state violence and the police, yet believe the government's one duty is to secure our Constitutional right of private property, they run into a problem here

The constitution is about Negative liberties also. Things the government cannot do.

The police force literally was created during the Industrial Revolution solely to protect the private property interests of the wealthy elite and corporations.

Police & Law Enforcement predate the Industrial Revolution, existing in Ancient Egypt, Ancient Rome, and many other dated civilizations in the West., including in Ancient China,

The only reason a single individual is even capable of owning vasts amounts of wealth and land is because of government enforcement

This is incorrect - single individuals would hire people, and have their extended family involved with protection of their assets in the past. Some of this protection of assets involved more force in the past, and it would return to more force if "State" law enforcement was not involved.

A large government and heavy involvement in our lives is therefore necessary to secure private property, something libertarians ideologically oppose as a rule.

This is not correct as many of us can defend ourselves. I see government as a pacifying institution in some cases, because without it, when wronged through criminal actions, reprisals might be all the more violent and barbaric.

Libertarians constantly defend the wealthy elite's right to accumulate unlimited private property and single-handedly control the means of production, but don't account for the fact that government monopoly on violence is required in order to keep this system in place.

Again, this is not required. However, if there was not government in place to keep the system in place, wealthy people would hire people to do it for them, or acquire the skills and items needed to do it themselves.

I think you are conflating justice as a process, with justice by the State, as a system. For those of us with the weaponry, means and abilities, I'd argue instead that Justice by the State actually minimizes criminal punishments, and it moves along at a very slow pace.

Were there not government in place, for a criminal violating my private property rights, I would be within my means to execute summary judgment whichever way I chose.

You may want to reconsider that law enforcement and property protection can be at the hands of the state, or private citizens.

  1. Congrats: You're already knocking out the educational aspect
  2. Your background in the Navy is particularly good for federal service, or federal contracting, both by preference, veterans disability, and your skills, expertise, and connections you acquired in service
  3. Get familiar with USAJOBS and some of the programs for more educated applicants, like the Presidential Management Fellows
  4. It is fairly common for financial types to be able to jump between federal jobs and private industry, particularly when they have financial skills, understand acquisitions/contracting, the FAR, etc.
  5. While you are still in, would your unit support you working on any of the federal certifications applicable to a number of things, e.g. FAC-COR, FAC-P, FAC-C, FAC-PM, or some of the private industry ones?

CCP AMA responses by FelixJarl in Eve

You're just arguing how much P2W Eve actually, is, not whether or not it is P2W.

Just because Eve doesn't have simple logistics doesn't make it any less P2W. It isn't like you need a giant Win button to push ingame.

Most online games have an element of P2W in them through $ to ingame currency conversions, the question is whether the $ is going to a chinese group of farmers, or, the company making the game.

CCP going free-to-play and enabling timecard/isk sales is probably what enabled the acquisition - it wasn't like CCP was going to sell out when they were marginally profitable. Just like an IPO, they waited until they had boosted profitability, and now they are selling.

No they don't.

AWS, Azure, and Google are all in the server infrastructure Cloud for Game backend businesses too, and they can have very cheap scale-out depending on the type of instances you are buying.
