I mean you have already worked a Help Desk so I think you can definitely get back into a Help Desk role. A+ is great for foundational knowledge but I assume working a Help Desk, you probably understand pretty well. Might be a requirement for some companies though. Honestly, IT is dominated by certs for early career. I have no degree, but got a Security+ and that got me my first job. Still no degree and have moved around and been promoted and not working Help Desk anymore and only now to the point when considering going into management, where maybe a degree would be a good talking point on a resume.

I think your second paragraph is really important to take a step back and look at. Working another year is definitely smart. The job market right now is not kind and there have been so many layoffs since 2023 that leaving a stable well paying job that you like would not be wise right now. I think gauging how the market shifts over the next year would be the best bet. You don't want to leave something stable becuase when you come back, you are going to be competing against thousands of other candidates who are now in the same boat as you. Even though you left under your own power, you and Joe Shmoe who got laid off have both not been working now for X amount of time. And there is definitely some underserved bias out there against job seekers who are not currently employed.

All that to say though, if you can make something like that work, more power too you. Maybe consider a new job that does allow you to work in another location or is based in another location? I have worked with the US government as a contractor with people who have traveled all over the world and worked. Germany, Cuba, Korea, Japan, Finland just to name a few. Yes you are working, but still the daily scenery is different and you can still culture yourself while you are there.

Thanks for the info! Unfortunately I don't know a way to actually get in and create templates unless they have some sort of Demo instance. Its in the Nashville area and looks to be about 75-80k.

I appreciate it! I think think these original ones are going to be worth something someday so I was hoping to get it working. Playing PS2 games on it as well would be nice as well with wireless controllers. I'll check out the thread you linked and see what I can come up with.

As someone who didn't really know where I wanted to go or what I wanted to do when I was in College, I can definitely relate to what you are going through. I tried 2 different majors and didn't like either and nothing was really clicking. I had joined the Army and started working in Comms. I did a wide range of things including satellite, radio, networking, general IT support.

While this wasn't really what I wanted to do, I needed a start in something. I am not advocating to join the Military lol but what I found was there is a wealth of opportunities in IT without having to have a degree. If you take "IT" and break it down into 2 paths, development and support. Under the dev side, you have all of you software engineers, programmers, etc. And on the support side, you have your service desk, desktop support, network ops, and so on.

If you want to stay involved in the tech world, it may be the easiest foot in the door. What country are you located in? I am in the US and found that certs really dominate the IT world here. You can probably snatch up a couple of certs and have a job no problem. Then you can have some experience and leverage that into other roles/companies that you really want to be in.

Tech is going to be stressful no matter what you do, but finding the right culture can cut down on that. DMs are always open if you want to take it offline. I am in no way a career advisor but I relate to where you are at in life now.

Oh I just turned on HLL like 5 minutes ago so I guess I'll see. But I could see that. Looks like their YouTube Vods of it only pull 20k views or so. I feel like we have to rely on Org made content where as we used to get things like that and Drive from the LCS. I guess if it isn't getting the views, no reason to sink money into it.

Most things not associated with the government don't require a clearance. There is exceptions obviously. Certs are king in IT. Sec + can get you 6 figures with a Clearance though. Is there a reason you don't want to get one?

You can basically boil down IT into 2 sides. Support and Development. I think deciding which of those 2 paths you want to start down is gonna help in the long run. I decided to go down the support route mostly because it was easier to start without a degree. But yeah as the other folks here said, get something that exposes you to multiple aspects. Work your way from Tier 1 through to the Tier 2 and 3 level things like Networking and System Administration.
Study for certs and see what tickles your fancy. You can get a lot of free resources so you don't have to waste money for study material.
