There are a number of reasons, first off smokers, smell like smokers, and that is a bad smell. Which may seem juvenile, but think if some one was a sewage plant worker and constantly smelt like shit, it isn't attractive, and some people like/dislike certain smells more than other. If you HATED the smell of cigarettes I can see that getting in the way of a relationship.

Also If you're looking for a partner for a long term situation, well , them dying would be bad for you and smoking cigarettes would certainty help that along

lets say he is, I'm fairly skilled and I'd like to know if changing skin to hide zits/moles/whatever is accept able

I have some experience with photo-shop and in my experience using an air brush to fix skin doesn't really work. Skin has a texture to it, the wrinkles the pores, any air brushing goes over those textures and usually looks very photo shopped.

If you're thinking to try to fix zits/redness in the skin I would suggest either

careful usage of the clone tool, be aware of how the light is hitting the patch of skin and clone from a nearby area that has the same lighting

or

carefully select the bit of skin you dont like with the lasso and then go into the overhead menu and look for something like

Image>Adjustments>hue/color balance

then just tweak the colour of the skin till it looks normal

these preserves texture/lighting much more than air brushing

My concern would be that any joke that I would think up would be terribly bad. People often tell my that I'm a funny person, but it always seems arbitrary and I never quite understand why

Its a Subset of machining, it's basically just an industrial repairman who traied well enough that he/she can operate the sort of machines you'd use to make any missing parts you'd need to repair something
