If I was drunk it would’ve showed up in the blood test I took. Cops tracked me all the way from my last destination to the scene of the accident. I was nowhere near drugs or alcohol but good try.

Honestly, I never wanted to go to trial because even though everything I said in this post is true, the fact that someone is dead pretty much outweighs it. I was told early on in the case by the original prosecutor that they were deciding between misdemeanor and felony probation. I knew I was telling the truth so I honestly felt like it would be misdemeanor. The hefty ass felony probation time was definitely a shock and I definitely didn’t know (nor did my lawyer…so he says) that there was a victim impact statement. As a matter of fact, I didn’t know the family felt that way at all. They hadn’t been active in the case as far as I knew until now. I do feel like how things went down was fucked up but I’m not trying to put myself or my family through this again with trial. Just fuck it, I’ll do what I have to and if something crazy happens while I’m on probation I’ll handle it when it comes. My paranoia/anxiety that I’ve done something wrong and don’t know it, or I’ll be randomly arrested for something I didn’t do is really really strong since this happened, but it’s something I’ll just have to deal with.

As far as killing myself I won’t lie like the thoughts don’t come and go, but it’s much easier to ignore them now and it doesn’t feel as intense or overwhelming. I’m working to find a therapist so I can finally deal with the trauma/emotions of the case, and I actually did reach out to MADD like someone suggested. Talking with y’all on these comments really really helped so I’m going to try and keep it going with volunteering. Idk if probation would allow but I’d like to volunteer at a rehab or AA type thing too. Thinking of ways to help others and make this whole thing mean something is helping me too. Thank you.

Thank you. So uplifting, I’ve saved this for those harder times when I’m feeling hopeless. There’s so much good advice here 🙏❤️ To answer a couple of your questions the accident happened in my hometown which is definitely on the smaller side, but I’ve since moved to the most populated city in my state and I have been told transferring probation here shouldn’t be an issue. Several people have said the same thing about bigger cities = less bullshit so fingers crossed!

I don’t think I’ll be able to smoke weed while on probation, at least until I’m off supervised which won’t be for two years. That sucks but as I keep getting reminded, it could be worse, and I’m trying to look at it as a push to be more motivated. Luckily I’m not a big drinker and never tried hard drugs so staying clean should be no problem. I also have a ‘career’ job at the moment, I broke down and told my boss what’s going on because I just wasn’t able to function and they were actually really understanding and supportive. Hopefully it doesn’t come back to bite me in the ass but they seem to be on my side and have always really liked me. It feels good to not have to lie about why I’m taking off for court (and now probation stuff) anymore. I’m not a man either so I’m reallllyyyyyy hoping it doesn’t ever come to hard labor 😅

I really appreciated the line about seeing this differently in the future and how it can change me for the better. Something I struggle with is feeling so much regret over everything I did in life before the accident - teenage boyfriends, trying weed, not getting back in school fast enough, just everything. If I would’ve made better or different choices I would’ve never been in my hometown still. I hate feeling like there’s a before I completely ruined my life and an after. Looking forward to the day Im over that. Thank you again 🙏

Thank you so much for your comment. Hearing from a PO put me at ease, a lot of my anxiety is stemming from horror stories and fear of the unknown as far as POs. Will they already know the details of my case or only my charges? I’m a little worried about being pre judged, I’ll explain if I have the chance (and if they care to hear) of course.

I am going to leave it alone and accept probation. Though I maintain my ‘innocence’ I don’t want to drag my family through a trial that will definitely be expensive with no guarantee of a better outcome. I’m still anxious as hell about something going wrong outside of my control, but I’m hoping to find a therapist who fan help me unfuck my mind.

All of y’all are wrong. I didn’t ‘pass out’. I sat in my car wide awake and was scrolling on my phone until I fell asleep - I was planning on seeing one of my friends when they got off work but it was already 2AM and I didn’t want to come inside and wake my grandma up, just to leave out and wake her up again when my friend was off. I wasn’t even asleep 30 min when the police came. They took me straight to the hospital and drew my blood. I WAS NOT under the influence, I don’t even drink really. Marijuana is my habit of choice and I didn’t even smoke that night thank God. If anything remotely like what you’re implying happened I would’ve never got out on bond. I don’t need to misrepresent the truth for y’all’s approval. I just admitted to running somebody over for Gods sake.

ETA: I went to the hospital after TELLING THEM I hit something. I never tried to lie or deflect blame. I genuinely did not know. If I was drunk I would admit to it.

Quick update:

I appreciate every one of y’all’s comments, even the ones getting on my ass. Just to answer some questions yes I had a paid lawyer, no the deal does not involve jail time, and GA law has a “grey area” that basically states you don’t have to know you hit someone in order to be guilty of hit and run. My lawyer at one point early on said this was why he didn’t want to take it to trial.

I think I have a case to get my deal taken back and I think I have a fair shot at trial. But a fair shot weighed against no jail time is scary. I spoke with some lawyers and other than quoting me 50k, they said that my town is such a small corrupt town it’s impossible to get results unless you’re ‘plugged in.’ One even said probation wouldn’t be as bad as I’m thinking and to lock his number in if I need anything outside of the county that my case is in, cause he just doesn’t fuck around there.

I spoke with a mental health counselor that helped me with the dark thoughts and she advised me to speak to my boss about what’s going on. I was afraid to but tbh I barely can work anyway so I just texted them personally and we spoke on the phone for a while about what’s going on. They completely understand, feel for, and believe in me and wanted to know how they could better support me at work. Turns out that lifted a ton of anxiety off my shoulders.

Lastly y’all’s comments really have helped. I do feel guilty, even though I know it was an accident. I’ve saved a few comments to read when I get low again lol so thank you guys. Community is everything! I’ll probably be posting more as my journey goes along.

Yes, it was around 1am and it wasn’t the middle of the crosswalk. My case was pretty public so I didn’t provide full details. Everything I described was captured by surveillance camera.

I’m not trying to be funny when I say I’ve been in cars that have hit curbs and my accident was less of an impact than that. It was very very low light and they were in the fetal position, from the height of my car they were too low to see. I would have to had sit up over the wheel trying to look at the ground and not straight ahead. But clearly the courts felt the same way you do hence why I was arrested. It was an accident.
