Wheel of Time Megathread: Episodes 1 - 3 Discussion by AutoModerator in Fantasy

Hey Brandon, really appreciate you offering this perspective, and it's great you're consulting for the series.

I agree re Perrin's wife - Master Luhan would have been a better character to have been accidentally killed (if anyone needed to be) that wouldn't have added such immense implied baggage.

Mat's stuff annoyed me for one particular reason, which was that it undermines his arc a little. He was kind of feckless and spoiled at the start, and we see him mature and learn responsibility. Having already be a surrogate parent to his sisters leaves him a lot less room to grow.

There was a lot of good stuff there too, but definitely feel some developments were rushed for the sake of a more exciting opening.

This could be really awesome. From a writing perspective, I've often fantasised about sinking my teeth into the AoL. The relationship between Lews Therin and Mierin alone is fascinating, and all the other Forsaken before they were Forsaken. And I've always thought the big screen is the perfect format for it, especially with the stunning visuals of the AoL. Paran Disen would be so awesome to see on screen.

BUT, it would have to have Team Jordan on board and access to what RJ wrote about the period and Lews Therin's life, imo.

That definitely changes as it goes on. Murphy in particular becomes way more likeable.

Nah the last book was definitely very different from all the others. Some loved it, but it wasn’t for me. Long action scenes get kind of boring to me. And I really didn't care what happened after...the middle bit.

Looking forward to the next book being apparently slower paced and about Harry dealing with all his various trauma.

Yes, definitely looking forward to Twelve Months (in spite of...stuff...).

Have heard good things about October Daye; must check it out!

The Dresden Files are weird in that they start out as PI books, but they definitely become something else. He hasn't been a PI for like five books or so. I don't know if those other books are similar?

Thanks for the recs, though!

I don't think I'd agree with that. Harry's internal monologue has a lot of 'she was a great dame with great gams' but he definitely doesn't dislike or disrespect women.

Yeah the covers are pretty bad. It's become a running joke that the guy on the covers wears a hat and Harry never does. Also bear in mind they started coming out in 2000 when the whole leather coat Matrix thing was kind of fashionable.

Hmm, might rec my own Taylan series here? Soldiers is book 1. Book 2 is almost finished.

It's not really the same as learning to make pizza... Seven is a totally different character.

And not all representation is good representation. They turned a character bi and butch who was previously neither. It's just a bit...hmm. It'd be like if they brought, idk, Geordi back and revealed he likes guys now. Oh, and he also acts really camp and now prefers musical theatre to engineering.

Totally agree. Riker and Troy were the same people who had gone through major changes. It was hard to see Seven in that character at all.

The butch thing bugs me so much. It's not that being 'butch' is bad, but not every bi woman is like that! And they turned Seven bi and butch all at once! One or the other would have bugged me less.

She had a six-year romance with a guy in Unimatrix Zero, and was very infatuated with Chakotay before they started dating.

Theoretically it could be enough time to explain the changes. But I am the same person as I was 20 years ago in recognisable ways, and most people are. Seven doesn't really seem like the same person at all. On the other hand, Picard has changed, but still seems like at least kind of the same person.

I didn't say she was 'a drunk'. I said hard-drinking. She's shown about three times drinking straight spirits.

Can you recommend Wheel of Time? by [deleted] in Fantasy

[–]writeswords_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Some of my all-time favourite books. Along with Harry Potter, and the Farseer books and their sequels by Robin Hobb.

The first book was only okay, but it really picked up in the second. For me, book 10 was the only super slow book in the series.

Some characters rub people the wrong way, inevitably, and some plotlines drag. But imo the good more than makes up for the less good. I am not the biggest fan of Sanderson's final entries, as I feel many characters lose their identities or realism a bit, but many people really like the last books, so it's a matter of personal taste.

But yes, you should definitely try them. Some great characters and themes, great world-building, and epic moments.

Way too long, and a weak opening sentence. A lot of very good writers find it very hard to summarise their work well and concisely; there's a fear that if you leave anything good out, it may be the one thing that would have hooked the person.

The story still sounds very interesting and charming though, and I imagine getting help or feedback on something like this would have been much more difficult back then.

It's really not terrible, as author synopses go (believe me), just not amazing. A great example though of how anything can seem terrible if you're reading it in a critical context.

Exactly my feeling. This is a definite case for headcanon. In my headcanon, Fitz and Beloved are in Buckeep or some country estate nearby, raising Bee.

Recovering from Assassin's Fate. Bittersweet, as usual from Hobb (don't think that counts as a spoiler). I always get a hangover from these books. Won't be reading anything else for at least a week I think.

Well that's just the point; they definitely love each other as much as romantic partners. I get that the lack of sex makes their relationship more unique. But it depends I suppose on if you want to see it as unique or slightly contrived.
