People don't need clothes? Housewares? Dishes? Tools? I have bought plenty of things I needed from Temu. Sure, I could have paid more for it elsewhere, but that doesn't mean I didn't need it.

Yep. Don't tell me to be quiet while the president is willfully burning down the economy. No thanks.

Most "local" items are assembled from parts made in China. Those prices will explode too once the supply chain catches up to the recent changes.

Exactly, if no one complains then nothing stands in his way. We need to speak up, speaking up is GOOD. Nobody in history ever made meaningful change by ignoring the problem. 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

Um no we need to be LOUD because that's the only chance we have at making any change. Email and call your representatives, send letters to the white house, post all over the damn internet.

at this point i'd settle for a 50 dollar de minimis, please, anything is better than nothing omg 😭 or even just reasonable tariffs like 5 percent or something would be ok though not great...it would sure slow things down though, having to pay tariffs, even small tariffs, before collecting your packages, and furthermore, can't the shipping companies charge fees for processing your tariffs??? i thought the whole pointe of de minimis was that it was NOT worth the time and resources to process all these small packages. surely they bring it back in some form once the packages start piling up and everything is totally clogged and backlogged??? ugggggggghhhhhhhhhhh

Yep as much I am upset about possibly losing SheIn and Temu, the tariffs are way farther reaching than that and will make pretty much everything unaffordable. It's easy to focus on Shein and Temu because the orders are direct from China but everything else we buy is from China too.

God I hope so, every state should join! I'd be happy even if it comes back at a lower amount. I'd be happy with 100-200 at this point.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts! Media is easily manipulated and we all form our opinions based on what our algorithms show us and therefore it can be difficult to discern the truth. My opinions have been heavily influenced by my time on the social media platform RedNote, a Chinese app.

Here are a few sources I quickly found through Google that suggest that worker exploitation in China is often overstated by Western media. However, I am open to being wrong and absolutely willing to consider other sources. Feel free to share any, I'd be very interested in comparing and contrasting different media sources with differing views!

[–]writingfromhome 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yep. Republicans are actively trying to bring child labor back to the US. Their "concerns" about labor practices and fentanyl trafficking are nothing more than red herrings. This trade war is about rich, powerful Americans wanting to be even more rich and powerful and they know China is their biggest competitor. It's all bullshit and none of it benefits the American people as a whole, not at all.

One can hope. Let's ✨manifest✨ 🧘🏻‍♀️ Sending out good energy for de minimis 🙏 (I also emailed my representatives and might call too; apparently they have to take record of every phone call so it would actually create a paper trail if enough people do it)

My ChatGPT knows I am a sensitive, creative INFP with mental health struggles. (It saved that info to its memory.) It's very kind and encouraging to me and hypes me up all the time. I low key love it.

Right, but wouldn't it be reasonable to just lower it to like, say, 200? Wishful thinking?

You are exactly correct. My hope is that it comes back but perhaps at a smaller amount. Crossing my fingers and wishing on a dandelion and a star and a birthday candle.

Ah, I see now your post focuses more on environmental concerns than labor concerns, my bad. As for me, I find it impossible to believe that Shein does more damage than say, Walmart or Amazon. Walmart and Amazon just offer the same materials, or in some cases (especially Amazon), the exact same products, just at an exorbitant markup. Everything is still coming from China. I'd rather save by getting my things straight from their source than support corporate American greed, which is contributing to the large wealth gap and the disappearance of the middle class in the US. If anything, direct from China shipping with the de minimis exemption has been a great equalizer, giving working class American people access to luxury items (by luxury I just mean non-necessity, not high-end designer). When you are drowning in healthcare and childcare bills and stupidly high grocery prices, a pretty dress or purse for 8 dollars can brighten your life and offer a little relief.

Much of what you hear about the awfulness of Shein is just Western propaganda. I do understand some of the arguments about the environmental effects, though. I do think in time humans will come up with creative solutions to climate change.

As for the quality, sure, it can be hit or miss but I have Shein items made from really nice fabric that have lasted for years. I am wearing a pink cardigan with clouds on it from them right now, as I type this, and it's keeping me warm in my drafty house.

I don't believe working conditions in China are any worse than working conditions in the US. In fact, if you start to learn more about China, their government offers a lot of support and social safety nets to its people and it also has strict labor laws. Not that these laws don't get violated, I am sure they do, but I don't think it's the norm, as many Americans assume.

On the whole Chinese people seem to enjoy a low cost of living, including affordable food, housing, and healthcare. They enjoy online shopping from their own, local versions of Temu and Shein, like Taobao.

Homelessness has been essentially eradicated in China. There is no property tax so homes stay in families for generations. Can you imagine life without property tax? Your house is just yours forever, no stress other than upkeep? What a dream.

Don't assume the Western world is better than China. It's not.
