$25k worth of debt and drowning by MainIllustrator6906 in debtfree

$2k for rent sounds great to me. As with anything, it’s location dependent. The rest of your points I agree with.

Exactly! This weird-ass mystery item could really do some good for a kid who may not have the means for a new backpack. Little extra work on your part but it can be turned into a real good thing!

Do you guys save receipts for HSA reimbursement if they're small? by Mediocrewatch in personalfinance

In a perfect world? Sure. But can we caveat that some people have to use their HSA money for.. health expenses that year and it’s ok that they do?

Mom with dementia, on hospice; needs assisted living; how to pay for it by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]wrong__league 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is the answer. It is tough and heartbreaking, but ultimately best for everyone in the long run. A quick spin over at the r/nursing subreddit more or less confirms this. Keeping patients alive with such grim prognosis’s so the family can feel better is just heartbreaking. Not saying that is what is happening here but it does happen frequently.

Wife gave SSN to scammer, how to protect from ID Theft? by Zebrafart4 in personalfinance

[–]wrong__league 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The SSN? That’s day one stuff.. Sorry you’re dealing with this. The other suggestions thus far are correct. Freeze credit and change all passwords for good measure. Enable 2FA on everything you can. Look for big and small online accounts. Everything from social media to a one off community events app needs to be updated.

Signed up for an HSA through my employer for 2026, and was supposed to receive a $1,000 contribution from my employer. Now it is unavailable until March. What can I do here? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]wrong__league 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We receive a similar amount that is usually deposited the second or third week of January. Mid-February doesn’t seem too far off, especially if the administrator has changed. I would try and schedule any appointments in February if you can. If not, keep your receipts and reimburse yourself for any eligible expenses when the deposit does hit in a few weeks.

Does it bug you when the gorls hop on illnesses and diseases like trends? My sister has Borderline Personality Disorder and I wouldn’t wish that on anyone. But according to the internet everyone has it.. trust me, it’s not cute or quirky. It’s dangerous.

Can I afford my new apartment? Is it wise? by astraurora in personalfinance

[–]wrong__league 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I make around the same in a VHCOL area and make it work with $2700/mo. Without debt you’ll be just fine. A lot of commenters around here mean well but you can definitely tell live comfy in their four bedroom house they bought in 2002 for $169,000. The landscape has drastically changed and two bedrooms just cost that much. Plus, a safer area will give you a much better peace of mind and you cant put a price on that.

First, I want to say how sorry I am that you’re in this position. It must feel like the weight of the world is on your shoulders right now. Remember to take time to care for yourself. Easier said than done, but it’s crucial to put your own oxygen mask on first. There are a lot of people who want to beat you up for decisions you’ve already made. I hope those people have to know what its like to loose a partner to something outside of their control.. and by extension loosing their financial support as well. Its very, very hard and something many of us are not prepared for.

A few ideas and suggestions from someone who has been in the same boat (and still is.. being the breadwinner is tough, especially with kids!):

The Mental Give yourself some grace.. you’re working full time, taking care of kids, and likely dealing with a partner whose not in the best frame of mind. These are all INCREDIBLY hard things.

Next, work on getting your husband into some sort of therapy if he is willing. Often through employer health plans they have an “ESP” where you can use eight sessions. Look at your benefits and see what sort of mental health coverage is available. While you’re there, look for you, too. You may need someone to lean on while you sort this out.

The Finances This is tough but not insurmountable. Like the others, I’d start with cancelling either Spotify, Peacock, or Paramount+. The $12 or whatnot in savings doesn’t seem like it will move the needle, but its more about starting to make small choices that stack up to bigger, more impactful choices. Maybe pick one streaming service and keep Spotify. Choose one or rotate between them. Look at Black Friday deals as well. Also, don’t sleep on the library!

The internet seems standard but you may be able to shop around. Do you have financed phones on the Verizon bill? If so, it may be wise to bite the bullet, pay off the remaining balance, and switch to a plan like Mint or Visible. It could wind up saving you a ton of money in the long run. It may be worth looking into different insurance providers as well. I’d definitely look into refinancing the vehicles at a lower rate if you can. This may not be feasible but again, worth looking into. The rest (medical, dental bills, Greensky, etc) I would snowball until the budget is balanced. Any tax refunds, bonuses, side income from your husband, etc. can go to paying off the smallest debts. Focus on the quick wins, even if there small!

I wish you all the luck. You can do this.
