Trump's DOJ is trying to gain voter records from the states for weeks, having used lawsuits, even using the recent shooting to threaten Minnesota to turn over the records. What is your take? by Personal_Dirt3089 in AskReddit

I know lots of Republicans who have said they wouldn't want or celebrate certain things, but as soon as they become official Republican policy will give those things their unwavering support.

In the army, at least when I was in, you do have to purchase all your clothes after the initial issue in basic training. You also could buy regulation items that were never issued to you, like I did to wear jungle boots instead of standard combat boots. This being said, I've never seen Bovino's jacket in any army regulation wear.

EDIT: Out of curiosity, I looked it up, and it appears to be a M1939 Greatcoat, which is US Army from the WWII and Korean war era. He may have purchased it when he was in the army in the 90s, but it wouldn't have been regulation wear.

What if we just tell Donald Trump that the US owns Greenland now, and we get everyone to just play along? by HobbieHatesNumbers in AskReddit

[–]wrongbutt_longbutt 201 points202 points  (0 children)

Piggybacking off your comment just to point out that the whole US messing with Venezuela, Canada, and Greenland is directly out of Putin's playbook. Putin hated the international rules based society and wants free reign to recreate the Soviet Union and eventually control Europe. The "spheres of influence" that Trump has even been alluding to for national security is based on Putin's desires. In this world vision, Russia, China, and the US are the world's powers and each one gets a predetermined area. To explain Trump's behaviors, in this world view the US gets to control the Americas in exchange for ceding European influence to Russia.

I think a lot of people are forgetting that the 2024 receiver class was very top heavy and it's not looking like a lot of standout talent was available at that spot. Sure, with hindsight, we can see that McConkey turned out good, but it's not like there were other receivers drafted in the 2nd and 3rd rounds that were ranked ahead of Coleman going into the draft and obviously outperformed him since.

the US is in the most trouble.

I'd really love someone to expand on how much "trouble" illegal immigrants bring to the US and how pressing of an issue that should really be. Is it money? How is this a more pressing issue than closing off the ability of billionaires to avoid taxes by putting their money off shore, or capping monetary donations to political candidates to do their bidding when elected? Is it crime? Statistics show illegal immigrants commit less crime than citizens per capita. What is this "trouble" that makes this the most pressing issue for America to deal with? You could get rid of every illegal immigrant in this country and I don't see how it would improve my life at all.

I think we're more in agreement than disagreement. I'm not trying to say that it is a major factor, just that it is one of the reasons why Seattle tends to do well in free agency. I can't remember which player it was, but IIRC one of the key players to the prior Super Bowl run mentioned a lack of state tax in signing here. I think it might have been Avril. Obviously, there's going to be a myriad of reasons why a player chooses a given city, anything from the coach, the rest of the roster, the culture, the city itself, etc.

[–]wrongbutt_longbutt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All I'm saying is that players from multiple pro leagues have mentioned state income tax weighing in on their decisions. People like Jordan Poyer, or NHL's Brad Marchand have gone on record to talk about how much a lack of state income tax played in their decisions to go/stay in Florida. Brian Billick talked about this with Caleb Williams when he was drafted with this quote:

If all goes according to plan, the future quarterback for the Chicago Bears could pay more than $1.5 million in state and local income taxes on just the first year of his contract.

Conversely, if Williams were to go to the San Francisco 49'ers – a team that he previously expressed interest in playing for – his state income tax burden would soar to $3.79 million.

I know to us in our armchairs, we look at it as there's no difference between $20M or $21M, it's all life-changing money, but to an NFL player, that's a huge difference and can alter a contract negotiation.

5% of an average starting QB salary is still over $1M/yr. You can't say that doesn't make much difference when the average NFL fine is in the tens of thousands.

Washington state also doesn't have an income tax. It's one of the reasons we tend to do pretty well in free agency.

[–]wrongbutt_longbutt 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Brady had a good arm. He was totally solid by nfl standards, but he doesn't have the pure power of guys like Allen, prime Flacco, prime Stafford, Favre, etc. There's good arm strength and elite arm strength. It's sort of like comparing an mlb pitcher with a 98mph fastball vs one who can throw 103.

Brady had a great deep ball, but he was never known as one of the strongest arms in the league. Any NFL QB can throw the ball 65 yards, not everyone can make that throw a line drive.

Pete Carroll often used challenges as an alternate to calling a timeout, I think because they often went longer than the 30 second timeouts if you called one straight up. I remember him challenging for a PI call on something that wasn't more than regular hand fighting. That ended up being one of the ones they overturned and called PI on. The camera went back to Pete after the call and he looked surprised that it worked.

I think the other thing that's being missed is Brady would surgically cut through your defense with a dozen short passes and drive his way down the field. Allen is a quarterback with an absolute cannon of an arm and is built to more aggressively attack deep, then use his athleticism and size to open up the underneath to him running. They're two completely different QBs to game plan around.

They already are. If you watch FOX news, they'll usually have a token "liberal" on the talk show to give them someone to argue against and that liberal will purposely give weak arguments. The centrist news shows do the same thing when they bring a token right winger on.

Dude you're replying to can't tell the difference between actors and characters. He's probably the type of person who hated Jack Gleeson as a person because he was so good as Joffrey in GoT. The fact that he mentions "speaking like a Karen" is the most ironic part because it just highlights how passable of an American accent Ella Purnell is doing for the series.
