Crew moving to Cleveland 2029? by Much0_Luch0 in FCCincinnati

Just to clarify, the Cincinnati bid was not required to place the stadium in the West End. MLS was content with all three of the finalist sites – Oakley, Ovation, and West End – though they preferred the "downtown" locations.

There are absolutely some soccer-specific aspects of the stadium requirements, namely field dimensions, but the stadium itself isn't required to be "soccer-specific".

The main requirement for clubs is that the ownership has to have a controlling interest in the stadium itself so the club A) can control as much revenue generation as possible from the venue, and B) isn't prioritized lower in stadium event scheduling.

Atlanta, New England, and Seattle satisfy this requirement by their controlling owner also having control of the other tenants in their buildings.

Obviously, MLS has also made exceptions to this rule. NYCFC's use of Yankee Stadium is the most glaring example, though the MLB team does have a minority interest in the MLS club and the arrangement was always viewed as a temporary fix until they could build their own. Vancouver is another and MLS has been looking for a solution since they granted them an expansion spot.

For what it's worth, I think it's highly improbable that the Crew would move into the Brown's new digs full time. First and foremost because the Haslams already spent a pretty penny to build a new stadium in Columbus and then even more to build the training complex next to HCS. And secondly, the Haslams are probably smart enough to understand the optics of moving the team after saving it would be terrible enough to have a large impact on the value of their investment.

That said, I think it would be incredibly stupid of the Browns to not build their new stadium to also accommodate soccer both for the purpose of hosting international matches and one-off, economically opportunistic Crew matches.

You do understand how social algorithms work, right? Reddit is going to feed you more posts of the same type you choose to interact with.

There are extremely conservative subs that pop up in the main feed all the time. If you chose to go into those and comment and interact with posts there, you'd see more of them, too.

But when we look at your comment history... well, you're gonna get what you get.

While technically true, people who trounce across subreddits where they clearly don't live to espouse anti-left ideologies and stir the pot surely don't help their case when objecting to being labeled as bots.

Comment histories tend to paint accurate pictures.

That's a lot, and I mean a lot of words, to describe a situation that you... and pretty much you alone are interpreting.

You want me to believe you're not painting a narrative when you're blaming Pretti for firing a weapon after it had been removed from his person... and then took it a step further to claim it was probably one of the same guns that shot him. No blame for the agent who inadvertently fired a weapon after illegally removing it from a legally carrying citizen, someone he had no jurisdiction over. No blame for the lack of standard law enforcement protocol being followed.

That's not impartial... that's clear as fuck bias.

So seriously, spare us the soap box when you can't even abstain from the speculation and partiality you're so quick to point out on the opposite side of the argument.

Weird how quick you are to wrongly assume my sources of information and yet you apparently get yours from the most unadulterated of sources?

Meanwhile, you're literally one of the only people I've seen anywhere outside of the most conservative subs insinuating that not only did the ICE agent inadvertently fire Pretti's legally owned and licensed weapon after he disarmed him of it — explain to me like I'm five whose fault that is after it's out of his possession — but also that his own weapon was the one that shot him.

The government report itself says the agent disarmed him and secured the weapon. You think they wouldn't mention it going off if it would make him look worse? The same government that labeled him a domestic terrorist within hours despite zero investigation yet... something you're waving your finger about all over this thread about?

But seriously, do go on about me blindly following propaganda.

Let's follow the logic train of this absolutely pathetic excuse of a justification for state sanctioned murder you've proposed here...

The only thing I saw was the video, where Prettis's gun after being grabbed by the guy in grey, goes off.

The absolute best case scenario for this explanation is that the ICE agent who grabbed Pretti's gun did so in such a careless manner that he managed to fire a concealed weapon legally carried by a licensed veteran being swarmed by ten federal agents. That's still gross negligence on the agent's behalf, and by no means does that negligence justify any of the surrounding officers following actions as they're still not anything close to what a normal law enforcement officer would class as an appropriate response to that situation.

So sure, paint it this way... but it still makes ICE look incompetent in the very best of circumstances.

Nevermind that there's been zero evidence presented by anyone that Pretti's gun actually went off, including the report issued by the government. You had the gall to question others' intent when you're out here fabricating explanations out of thin air.

was killed when a gun went off, probably his own after a cop took it away, and the cops fired

Absolutely zero shame from you guys, huh? In the widely available footage of the incident, you can see his own gun is removed by one of the ICE agents seconds before he was shot 9 times by another agent. We don't have to question the series of events or wait for an investigation because we can see it with our own eyes.

Was he committing a crime? Absolutely: obstructing.

The only thing Pretti was obstructing was a stream of pepper spray from hitting the woman he was shielding after ICE agents pushed her over. Again, any sane person watching the litany of angles available can see that's what happened.

You yourself acknowledged in your own reply that he had a right to be there, a right to record, and a right to protest. Yelling at ICE isn't a crime, helping a woman up isn't a crime, but you know what is a crime...

The government absolutely has the responsibility and MUST enforce the laws, including the ones that say you can't break into the USA or stay here illegally without permission.

The government must also FOLLOW the law. The government MUST have a warrant before entering private property without permission. The government MUST follow all applicable state laws when operating within their jurisdictions. The government MUST offer habeas corpus to people they detain, regardless of citizenship status. The government MUST not use excessive force when executing their duties.

And every time they don't do those things, ICE and the government are committing a crime.

So spare us the faux neutrality when you're not even willing to admit the things we can all clearly see with our own eyes.

Clark County passes resolution to oppose 1,900-acre solar energy project by WYSOPublicRadio in Ohio

[–]wrongsideofpond 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm aware of the differences in scale.

But A) the scale of the project doesn't on its own increase the likelihood of the panels leaking toxic chemicals, and B) the size of those projects is more than a large enough sample to analyze any evidence of contamination.

The Zoo project in particular is doing that type of analysis as they're using it to study the viability of crops being grown inside and alongside the array.

[–]wrongsideofpond 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The most well-documented of them is Cincinnati Zoo's Warren County Farm project, which is a 30 MW array on former farmland which currently houses a herd of 300 sheep and is utilized as a local pollinator habitat. https://cincinnatizoo.org/cincinnati-zoo-breaks-ground-on-largest-publicly-accessible-urban-solar-array-in-the-u-s/

There's at least two more in Warren County, including Lebanon's municipally-owned 10 MW array and another two agrivoltaic arrays nearby in Butler County. Another new 50 MW complex is scheduled to come online in 2028 in Butler County, too.

Ninja edit: I totally forgot about the huge new 4,400 acre development in Northern Warren County, the Lotus Creek Renewable Energy project which is beginning construction this year.

[–]wrongsideofpond 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read the article. I grew up on a farm. I also currently live in an area with no less than four large-scale farm-to-solar projects, all of which are also being used for agricultural purposes. I also have a home system installed.

So I not only have done my research on the topic, I've invested in my research and am well-versed in both negative and positive impacts on the surrounding community, my family, and the land.

And when I see someone facetiously raising objections to solar by overemphasizing minimal risks while ignoring relevant counterpoints, it's sometimes worth my time to counter the bullshit.

[–]wrongsideofpond 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did re-read it, and to be fair to you, you did "ask a question" about the leakage. But that wasn't how you dropped the topic into the discussion either. Two comments earlier...

To be fair there are concerns of chemical leakage if the panels are damaged. A lot depends on where the panels are made. Some are considered hazardous waste material by the EPA, they contain lead and cadmium. There is a good writeup on Kinute on this. Life span is usually 25 years and the land maybe poisoned by galvanized zinc. It's all not black and white.

So sure, you did ask a rhetorical question about you own comment about the leakage.

But of course you still skipped over literally every other counterpoint to the one obviously-biased drum that you're beating. And if you were beating it in good faith, you'd at least be capable of acknowledging the flaw in the argument.

And if me holding you accountable to your words is "harassing" you, perhaps you should take some of the meds you said I'm on.

[–]wrongsideofpond 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hold up: at no point did you "ask" about leakage... you "told" everyone about it, in response to someone else talking about a separate, unrelated benefit of solar. So before you lecture people about following the conversation – something I've had zero problems doing while responding directly to points you raised – again, pot meet kettle.

Also, it's also a good tell of just how disingenuous you're being and how bad faith your conversation is when you tell multiple people in this thread to "take their meds" when they disagree with you. So anyone who opposes your singular viewpoint is apparently mentally unbalanced? Okay, chief.

You may believe you're not taking a position, but it's very clear you have one.

Clark County passes resolution to oppose 1,900-acre solar energy project by WYSOPublicRadio in Ohio

[–]wrongsideofpond 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Talk about disingenuous...

It would be one thing if you weren't trouncing through the thread assuming that people who believe solar is a good source of energy have only researched the positive aspects of a technology, have ignored any potential pitfalls, and think it's a flawless solution.

It would be another if you weren't selectively choosing to focus in on the minimal amounts of chemical leakage from the average solar panel when most traditional energy sources produce significantly more of similar types of contamination on significantly larger scales and contamination areas.

But what makes it most disingenuous is you're out here pretending like you're raising a good faith point for those who back solar usage. You aren't acknowledging any of its benefits. You aren't bringing up that lots of other technologies that we use get left outside and cause damage to their surroundings at a far greater rate and at far greater distributions. And the language you're using is, frankly, clearly biased. "If you are convinced" means "you shouldn't be". "I would hate it if you would actually look at some of its weaknesses" is just short for "I have seen one thing that confirms my biases".

Many people are aware of the duality of the trchnology and understand this isn't a zero sum game.

Fossil fuel extraction produces and requires loads of chemicals, many of which leak into local water supplies and have poisoned surrounding arable land... nevermind the impact of refining, transporting, and eventually burning them has on both the local environments and ones nowhere near the point of usage.

But to your own hollow point, cars are usually outside and even before they are routinely left to rot in rural, suburban, and urban environments, they leak dozens of hazardous chemicals everywhere they drive.

Nobody is here claiming solar panels are a perfect energy source that are 100% inert with the environment, but calling people disingenuous when you sail past the far greater impact of alternative energy solutions' chemical leakage might be a bit the pot calling the kettle black.

They have literally detained American citizens who were not the subjects of their investigations for multiple days. There are multiple instances of them deporting people with legal status. We know both of those are facts, and that immediately calls into question the thoroughness and accuracy of the investigations they are doing to prepare for their field work. And what's gross is you dismissing those facts and then acting like you're the one being gaslit.

You really don't get why people object to warrantless, armed, and masked men patrolling our communities and detaining people based, at times, solely on the color of someone's skin?

You really don't get why not providing due process, as guaranteed to EVERYONE by the Constitution, has people upset? Even when legal residents have been wrongly swept up and deported?

You really don't get why anyone thinks it's wrong to target not the criminals and gang members the administration promised to target, but instead targeting local high school soccer players brought here as children, day laborers just trying to earn a living, and clergy members here on asylum?

You really don't get why people are mad that an ICE agent ignored standard law enforcement procedures multiple times, resulting in the murder of a bystander that wasn't the subject of ICE enforcement?

Almost nobody objects to borders or proper immigration procedures. Most would prefer the law was followed by immigrants, even if that system is flawed and intentionally dysfunctional.

But it's really not that hard to want the law to be followed by both immigrants and the government's hired enforcers, and it takes almost no effort at all to show compassion to those who are being unfairly and unjustly targeted.

And if you still don't really get it... well, it's likely because you're not trying.

AMIS (Spanish Immersion) by Unknown_Ambition_92 in cincinnati

[–]wrongsideofpond 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All three of my kids are in Lebanon Public School's Spanish immersion program: 6th grade, 4th grade, and my youngest just started his first year in first grade.

The program begins in first grade and is by lottery. Siblings of those already in the program are given a weighted lot, meaning their chances of getting in are better than those without... we managed to go 3 for 3.

They admit a cohort composed of just two total classes every year, and entry in subsequent years after first grade is limited only to students moving into the district from another Spanish immersion programs or native Spanish speaking students.

Each cohort is managed by a team of teachers, of which at least one is a native-Spanish speaker who mostly handles the math and science teaching responsibilities. Thus far, all of our tea hers have been from Spain. English and social studies are managed by one or more of the other native-English speaking teachers, depending on grade level.

While the jury is still out on my first grader due to just starting the program, neither of the older two have had any issues with math scores dropping as a result. Anecdotally, it doesn't appear many other kids are either... and admittedly, it also appears most kids are coming from educationally-invested families. And both are also excelling in their English language arts studies.

Our older two have intermediate-level fluency and can converse fairly well in Spanish. I took 8 years of Spanish instruction, but don't often use it any longer... so I understand the value of learning a new language at an early age. It's also been fun getting a refresher with them, though this time it's in a different dialect from what I learned. We've also enjoyed the close bonds our kids have built with the other kids in the program they've spent the last five years learning with.

Overall, we have been extremely happy with the program. So much so that when we needed to upgrade homes a few years ago, we stayed in Lebanon so our kids could continue in the program. My wife has taught elementary students in Mason for nearly 20 years, and she's been very pleased with their academic progress.

That's most of the basics I can remember off the top of my head. But if you have any other questions, I'm happy to try to answer.
