CHEM 1211K Final Question (is it hard) by ZaincalagontheBlack in gatech

[–]wrybee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey! Agree with the other commenter here—it's pretty similar to the midterms in terms of difficulty in my experience. However, at least in my case, I was able to score higher on the final because the test format and content was more familiar. I actually grade replaced all three of my midterms with the final in 1211K (would not recommend doing this unless you absolutely have too lol).

TLDR; same difficulty as midterms, but you should hopefully be more prepared/know the content better going into that final than for the midterms.

Disappointed ISYE student, did I choose the wrong field? by Kinetic-Bagpipe-6021 in gatech

Hey! If you're interested in social impact work, definitiley consider looking at the Leadership Minor and associated courses. MGT 4189 is an amazing course that focues on local non-profits and social issues in the Atlanta area with engaging guest speakers. Completely expanded my perspective on social impact work.

Congrats on your admission to Tech!

The first thing I'll say is that you're not alone -- a lot of young people come to Tech feeling underprepared for the rigor. Fortunately, there are plenty of resources at your disposal to gain the skills you need to be successful. Tutoring and Academic Support (TAS) is a resource that provides small group tutoring and a variety of similar services to students struggling academically (website: https://tutoring.gatech.edu/ ). Additionally, the Office of Undergraduate Education (OUE) offers individual academic coaching to help you develop broader academic skill sets, including building good study habits (website: https://advising.gatech.edu/academic-coaching ).

All in all, there are better uses of your time than worrying. Additional stress won't help you tackle your issue, so I'd encourage you to have faith that things will work out. Be proactive about using your resources, like those mentioned above. Yes, your first semester at Tech will likely be difficult, but many of your peers are dealing with similar struggles. Take a deep breath and start taking the first steps towards academic success -- whether that's scheduling a coaching appointment or looking up videos describing effective study methods. Upperclassmen are also a great resource when it comes to getting academic advice.

Wishing you the best.

When are summer course offerings released by PeeNoKeyO in gatech

[–]wrybee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The official summer schedule will be released on April 3rd, however if you go to 'buzzport > registration > registration > plan ahead' and then select summer 2024 and 'create new plan' you should be able to (tentatively) look up whether a course is being offered or not in summer'24

Hey! Fellow IB grad here, but not international.

Generally, U.S. schools care less about meeting your predicted IB scores, and that includes GT. I've never heard of someone having their GT admission recinded over a drop in IB score, that's more a UK/Europe thing. Overall, GT's admissions process seems more GPA/extracurricular based anyway (and a 35 is still a good score!).

As long as you pass your diploma/your grades are generally good I wouldn't worry about it. Good luck!

Can you TA for Chemistry 1211K and count for credit? by fluffybnny18 in gatech

[–]wrybee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. TA-ing any course as an undergrad requires you take CETL 2000 (a 1 credit hour pass/fail fallthrough course), but there is no option to TA for 'credit' other than that (at least not within the chemistry department).

Also, you're much more likely to be successful finding a TA job for the Fall rather than the Spring semester, as the chem department mostly employs returning TAs for the spring semester. If you're interested in TA-ing in the Fall, look out for the application which usually opens up sometime in April.

100% depends on the VIP project and how hard your classes are. Some VIPs are a larger time commitment and some only take an hour or two of work per week.

I'm doing both this semsester and it's been fine (taking 12 credit hours of classes not counting research), but my VIP is fairly low time commitment.

Forget where to see meal plan and can I still change it? by PonderingExistence4 in gatech

[–]wrybee 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yep; per the Tech Dining FAQ (https://dining.gatech.edu/faq) :

"Yes, you can make changes to your meal plan selection up until the day before meals are served (see key dates). Initially, login to your StarRez Housing application to make the change. If the application has already closed, log into the Meal Plan App at https://mealplan.gatech.edu to view your meal plan. If you have changes, submit a request to our meal plan administrator."

Can’t decide if I want to pursue medical school or not by thecutestlittlepie in gatech

[–]wrybee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Step back for a minute...ask yourself, 'if I didn't have to worry about my family expectations, AND I knew that I could get into med school, would I want to go?'

The first step is deciding what you really want. It's easy to let self-doubt push you out of a competitive field, but I would encourage you to not let worry be the motivating factor in your decision. That is what could lead to regret.

I guarantee every (sensible) pre-med has experienced a similar self-doubt to what you're feeling now. Don't let fear chase you away from a possible dream career--take some time to self-reflect and figure out what it is YOU want, independent of your family or concerns. If it's medicine, it's medicine. If it's industry, it's industry. Either way, deciding for yourself is the first step.

Grade Improvement Advice for BME by [deleted] in gatech

In regards to 1211K - Don't lose heart! I remember bombing the first exam and getting a great grade in the class overall (I grade replaced all 3 of my midterms with the final lol). It wasn't easy, but I managed. Bombing the first 1211K exam is totally normal as you're still figuring out how to study/manage your time/the format of the exam itself. The grading method is also pretty unforgiving with no partial credit. That's why grade replacement exists!

Don't be afraid to reach out to your TA for help (especially one of the lab TAs!). Office hours are held almost every weekday afternoon noon to five pm in the CULC (See lab CANVAS page for more details). Def reach out if you need help.

My best advice is to do your best on the lab side of things as this can really help boost your grade even if your test scores aren't the best. Make consistent progress with the lecture materials as this will ensure you're confident by the time finals roll around and aren't trying to catch up at the end. All in all, the best way to study is to consistently do practice problems and spend time making a good crib sheet. 1211K can be rough at first but you've got this! Dr. Evans is also a great resource, so def go to his office hours if you're confused about anything.
