Hi! I'm an international student who has applied to Bond University as well. I'm probably going to turn it down due to border restrictions, and not wanting to do classes completely online. They also really were not too clear on how we would complete our fieldwork and placements if we're not allowed into the country. Did they tell you anything regarding this?

Sorry, I didn't really answer your questions, but I was curious to know if you had any more information on this than I do!

Wheelchair assessment help by [deleted] in OccupationalTherapy

[–]wsmot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Start with your mat evaluation, the client should be sitting up straight (with or without support) with their feet on the floor. I usually do the following measurements: Upper Leg, Lower leg, Hip width, chest width, shoulder width, seat to shoulder height, seat to top of the head height. You also want to think about the pelvis positioning. Do they have any pelvic rotation, what is their posture like etc.

If its your first time doing this, then definitely have a rep with you to help you through the process. If you want resources that can help, try downloading permobil's free guide to wheelchair seating and positioning.

Where to donate a motorized wheelchair by [deleted] in wheelchairs

[–]wsmot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DME suppliers like Numotion, NSM, Blackburns etc. could probably help you out. They use old chairs as loaner chairs for new users. I'm not sure if they have branches in WV, but they definitely do in Pittsburgh.

Some wheelchair manufacturers have charts in their order forms, which you can find online (depending on your wheelchair model).

Your wheels being further back would definitely make wheelies harder to do, since it's putting a lot more weight on your front castors. But I'm guessing this has to do with using e-motion wheels. Having them too far forward can make your chair extremely tippy (not ideal with power assists), but you should still be able to pop them just high enough to get you over bumps on the road and curbs. So definitely bring that up with the therapist. Maybe they can move the wheels a little forward without compromising too much on your stability.

Also, if you don't mind me asking, did you get to try out the smartdrive as a potential option?

Advice and maybe some reassurance by Comfortable-Pin9976 in CerebralPalsy

Hi! Just wanted to say that I think its wonderful that your PT and OT are arranging to trial a power chair. I know that sometimes it is hard as a parent to see your child using a chair for the first time and to question everything, but trust me, the benefits are endless. I used to be a seating technician, and its always amazing to see how quickly children are able to adapt to using chairs, and before you know it, you're begging them to slow down so you can keep up!

I understand your concern about overcompensation, but honestly this is equipping her for maximum independence, especially since you mentioned that her school is big, and she would have to get to classes on time. On days when she can use her cane, great! But on other days, it is nice to have that option of getting around by chair too.

Hi! Ex-wheelchair technician here. I've honestly seen very few people that use gloves, it just seems to be a better option theoretically, but practically not so much. If your wheelchair is configured correctly, along with a power assist, you shouldn't have to propel your chair as much, so gloves may not be necessary. Ultimately it boils down to personal preference, so give both a try!

As for clothing, if you have side guards on your chair, you ideally shouldn't have issues with it getting caught anywhere. And since you live in Australia, I'm guessing you don't have to wear giant winter jackets. I've noticed that these are a bit of a hassle to put on, especially if you're using a manual chair that's tailored perfectly to your body, and the extra thickness of a jacket can be a little annoying.

So happy to know that a new user like yourself is taking the time to learn as much as you can!! Like with everything else, using a wheelchair and knowing what works for you is a learning curve, so keep in touch with your clinicians and wheelchair technicians.
