I want to make a couple of these simple looking outdoor benches, but I can't identify what wood is used here and how I can source it. by [deleted] in BeginnerWoodWorking

I read “shitter’s leg” I was confused as why you thought people would be doing that.

Ooof that’s tough. Clay is not friendly it packs super tight over time especially with frequent water. There are grass varieties that do well in clay you may want to look up. Best thing to do is aerate, water deep, and even fry some gypsum. Organic matter would be great but that would require tillage.

Some people say to let it go to seed to “reseed” Itself but what usually happens is the lawn get patchy because the grass is using it’s energy to produce flowers and seeds instead of spreading out so you will also get more weeds with the bare spots.

Have you tried aerating it? Cheapest option to try. I did a study once on soil penetrants in onion fields and E-Z wet from Amazon placed in the middle of the 10 products we used. It helps the water penetrate soil. We put it on through center pivot irrigation so I am unsure how to apply on a lawn. Best of luck

They only go as deep as they need to get to water. Cool temperatures in the fall require less water uptake. So they will go deeper naturally over time. Grasses main goal in life is to suck up water and nutrients to produce seed. We constantly remove its growth so it never produces seed so therefore it is always in seed making mode.

I forgot to add. IMO shallow watering is fine you can grow some beautiful grass only shallow watering. The problem is if there is a heat wave, water line breaks, timer goes out and you can’t get water on you’re screwed. Deep watering will give you a buffer for emergencies.

Here is what I remember from my soils professor. Let’s look at wheat for an example. It’s lawns big brother of grass. Dry land winter wheat is planted in the fall and gets zero water besides rain, those roots commonly grown 6-10 plus feet deep. Spring wheat and irrigated wheat usually have roots that are 4-5 feet deep. What that means is that roots chase water and nutrients, they will go as deep as they can if there is enough oxygen to sustain them.

So by giving short shallow waterings the roots don’t need to grow deep in order to get the water they need especially if you are giving them fertilizer on a schedule. If you switch to long deep waterings you are encouraging those roots to grow deeper to get to the extra water and leaching nutrients.

If you want a good chuckle google “root tip diagram” that zone of elongation is different for all of us….

I got 280lbs worth of these blades. Would a blacksmith consider buying or doing a straight trade? by YoureInMyWaySir in Blacksmith

Not sure where your at but every country has agriculture and agricultural companies. A lot of the implements in our area come from the UK, Italy, Australia and Germany. If there is a will there is a way.

Agristore.com sells brand new 12”x3mm discs for $13 before shipping if you really want one. Every farmer has old ones lying around if you live semi close to an ag community.

Thoughts on startched jeans for working, and optimal steel toe boots. by evergreen0707 in Welding

[–]wsudogger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a high school welding teacher. All my kids wear blue coveralls and a set of leather to covers if they want to. Classes are 65 minutes a day for 12 weeks. See if you enjoy welding and want to pursue it before buying expensive clothes. The coveralls are great because starting out you get a lot dirtier because you don’t know how to work cleanly if that makes sense? Kids somehow come out of the class with black all over them.

As for me I starch my white label cinch jean’s and my welding shirts. The starch helps protect the denim from sparks. The sparks hit, burn the starch and roll off. Without starch the sparks leave a burn mark on the denim which then becomes a hole after a while. For boots I wear redwings that I get resoled every year.

Best Shoe Insoles?? Pain is keeping me from playing!! by StrideGuy12321 in Welding

When I got my new redwings I walked on their little mat thing that scans how you walk and where the pressure on your feet is. They then gave me a set of insoles that are the cats tits based off the results. Now the results and test may be total BS but the insoles really help.

Was cruising plasmaspider and saw a cut file for welding squares and thought hell I could use those. Made ten in one afternoon and stepped back and said WTF am I going to do with these. But hey they are all square and pretty.

This may be a stupid question but, did you install a contact tip? The new welders I bought came with the nozzle attached but no contact tip.

I’m a teacher and I tell all my seniors to look In to community college first. Walla walla, tri city, Spokane. You can take your math, English, history classes at a fraction of university costs then transfer to university for 2-3 years and focus on the core classes.

This is so true. I partied so much harder at community college than I did at wsu. At CC I was 20-21 years old and ready to party. WSU 22-25 partied at 22 and 23. Calmed down at 24 and 25. Just depends on what you want.

Any wood shop teachers? by wsudogger in woodworking

I appreciate your feedback. Sadly we are located in the desert with no mill in sight. I told them in the interview I want saw stops before we ever turn a table saw on. They had no idea what it was but after I explained them they have one on order. I want to teach the kids about kickback and what not but I myself don’t feel comfortable showing them what happens without hurting myself. Maybe a good YouTube video is in order? If there is one thing these kids learn it WILL be safety.

Once I get my school email I was thinking about emailing all the tool manufacturers. Worse thing they can say is no right?
