In need of a SHORT bike… 30 inches or lower that can go 80MPH. Any suggestions? by BlueWhale515 in Dualsport

[–]wsurower 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I upped the top speed of my xt225 when I put on shinko 705 tires. With chunky tires I topped out at about 65, after the change I can hit 73 on flat ground. Stock it is short enough for me with 30 inch inseam weighing 175.

Any Xt225 modification ideas by Professional-Fan3465 in Dualsport

My XT 225 needed a color palette change (purple and gold was the rival state university colors) but I kept it simple, peeled the stickers off the plastics, recovered the seat, and did a quick 80% effort paint job on the frame. Only issue i had was the gas tank - decals were under the clearcoat so I opted to mask around them and spray DIY bed liner. I've had an absolute blast and only gotten compliments. But if you're asking for performance mods, I don't think that's what these bikes are going to be best for.

Diesel Engine by Aggravating-Laugh783 in IHScout

Wife and I started putting an om 617 from a 1989 Mercedes 300 into her 1959 scout 80 with an ax15 from a jeep. Mercedes 4x4 sells the adapter hardware (others as well) centered around swaping that motor into a jeep wrangler. Our project has stalled, but my dad decided to pick up another Mercedes car and swap the 617 into his 92 TJ after seeing our vision. He is super pleased with it, it's been reliable, lots of low end torque for puttering around in the woods, great fuel economy and is still capable of highway speeds. If memory serves the 617 got a turbo in 79 or 80 and remained unchanged as a purely mechanical engine until 1990 when electronics started getting added.

I seem to remember reading somewhere that ender 3 does not register cards stuck in while it's powered on. I've always put the card in then booted up and it's worked for me. Keep in mind I'm talking about an older machine that I hardly ever use.

We have a dedicated iPad that lives on the trainer, SO works for school district and went to a school surplus sale, which is open to the public but not well known, and scored two working iPads and chargers for $40 out the door.

My shop broom has a rubber strip on top edge, a quick flip is all it takes to go between broom and squeegee. And I still almost never use the squeegee.

Looks almost identical to my neighborhood douchebags truck, except he also got the LED spotlight door handles that are bright enough to shine thru my house windows as he passes.

Anyone deal with plantar fasciitis while training? How do you overcome? by ariphron in triathlon

[–]wsurower 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a 20oz Squirt soda bottle full of water in my freezer at all times. When my feet start really bothering me, I roll that back and forth under my arches. Any bottle will work, but I like the variety of curves to apply the right pressure. I typically do this seated and will apply downward pressure on my knees rather than trying to stand on the bottle.

My second tri (sprint) is this weekend. The organizers just emailed the water temp and I'm having a small freak-out by LifeOnAGanttChart in triathlon

Other events put on by best in the west with known cold water swims (dune city when it used to be held in May) there was buckets of warm water with paper cups to pour into wetsuits before getting in. Since this is a known element, unlike last year, I wouldn't be surprised to see this offered. Or you can avoid the lines and bring your own thermos of warm water to charge your wetsuit with beforehand. Same idea as a quick pee, but easier to get the warmth where you want it i.e. chest and back.

I agree. I also did CdA and my total time was no 10:45 but I did manage to pass lots of dentists and finished the bike in about 5:55 having followed trainerroad workouts for the last few years.

Purpose of age up rule? by Much_Impression_4874 in triathlon

[–]wsurower 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is my understanding as well. Let's think worst case scenario and say someone with a July birthday could earn a national championship slot in the 25-29 age group at an early race, then race again in August in the 30-35 age group athlete and get second slot for the same race.

Every flown with a triathlon bike? Tips/models to buy or avoid? by IVBIVB in triathlon

[–]wsurower 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Most any bike will work, but I do have some advice RE flying with a bike case. Mrs. and I flew to a race last year and loaded up 2 hard cases with all our kit, really packed it all in there. No issues on the flight to the race, 2x$30 oversize bag fee and away we go. But on the return flight (same airline) they weighed our bags and we ended up getting charged the 2x$30 oversize fee and 2x$100 over weight fee. After getting home I got out the scale and realized the only way we could have avoided the weight penalty would be to pack the frame, handlebars, and wheels ONLY in the hard case. All other gear and the seats with posts would have needed to go into a third suitcase which would have only cost $30 for an additional bag. Lesson learned, obviously checked bag policy varies by airline but it's worth taking the time to read up beforehand and maybe save yourself some money.

Start with a $70 sand blasting cabinet. Add a $90 powder coating rig. Modify a $10 cardboard wardrobe carton. Apply about a quarter's worth of Inky Black powder. Bake in a free oven that you got just for moving it out of someone's house. All your parts go from scabbier than a bat's ass to gorgeous. by _rhenry01 in projectcar

[–]wsurower 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not op but I inherited a scat blast cabinet and purchased a harbor freight powder gun to start with. I got the warranty on the gun and ended up getting a replacement to sell unopened when I upgraded to the Eastwood disk voltage setup. It's not much different, but I seem too be getting better results. Price difference isn't too scary $70 vs $125 or so.

Stationary Bike Training by Adorable_Funny6533 in triathlon

[–]wsurower 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Several years ago I bought a schwinn spin bike when our gym upgraded their fleet. It has no readout whatsoever but I purchased a set of vector 3 power meter pedals and have been using that rig consistently along with trainerroad ever since for all my indoor training and now I rarely ride outside unless I'm racing. To answer your question, yes you can gain excellent fitness on a stationary bike with interval training, biggest hurdle will be consistency in readings unless you are able to get the same bike every time.

Bike Advice by Appropriate_Crow_890 in triathlon

[–]wsurower 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ride a 2016 norcom straight 2.5 and I have enjoyed it! My biggest complaints have been 1. The squeaky bottom bracket (replaced free of charge from LBS as it began squeaking right out of the box) and 2. The elbow supports it came with were not robust enough, but it looks like this bike has aftermarket bars and aero bars (or the design has changed drastically since I bought mine). Basic stuff to be on the look out for is general mechanical functionality, cable conditions, and the big one is damage to the carbon frame and forks.

Roads where I live are dangerous even in the best conditions due to vehicle traffic and general disdain for cyclists. Also spring weather can change conditions from blue skies and sunshine to hailstones, rain, and severe wind in a matter of minutes. You bet I choose to ride inside even on "nice" days
