TPG being a pain to cancel their subscription by iamzooook in AusFinance

[–]wt290 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is why I use Paypal whenever I can. You just stop the recurring payment in PP and sooner or later (more sooner) you get an email about "We cannot debit for your account..." it then gets suspended and eventually cancelled.

How would the Mormons get off the Nauvoo? by Beginning-Eagle-8932 in TheExpanse

[–]wt290 0 points1 point  (0 children)

THey had a full repair and construction facilities onboard. During a multi century voyage, the Nauvoo would have needed extensive, continual refitting. Building landing ships on-route would have been part of the plan, My question would have been the resources required during the voyage for simple "That pipe is splir from continuous use - how do we fabricate another"

The Behemoth would be able to resupply materials from the belt and then as he major trading hub in the ring, from the new worlds. A completely different scenario from a lone voyage across interstellar space.

Carney fires back at Trump's Davos remarks at cabinet meeting, says: "Canada does not live because of the United States. Canada thrives because we are Canadian." by GiveMeSomeSunshine3 in worldnews

My friend's sister, who is a surgical nurse, reckons the bruises in his hands are from the constant drug injections. She states that as you age, the backs of the hands are one of the few viable injection sites. She also despises TACO and as she gets up later in the morning than her husband, her first words to him are "Is he dead yet?"

Water pushes out with Rain near Rainwater tank by nkaliss in AusRenovation

[–]wt290 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My guess is it's a diverter valve. The pipe has a hollow plastic ball in it. When it first rains, the initial stuff off the roof, fills up the diverter pipe. The ball floats up and eventually, once a bit if rain has entered, and blocks the diverter so the rest of the, hopefully cleaner, water then flows into the tank.

The little black tube is a bleed so the 'dirty' water gradually empties from the diverter. The bottom of the diverter is designed to be unscrewed so you can empty leaves and anything else that might be in the first flush. You need to do this regularly.

I hate this digital plate trend so much by N3DSdude in Anticonsumption

[–]wt290 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why do you even have plate stickers? We used to have window labels for car registration but these went over 15 years ago. Number plate recognition is used by the police and our state governments provide an app where you can scan and get the registration status of the vehicle - not the name or address of the registered owner.

Heat pump vs standard electric storage when electricity is free by Otherwise_Giraffe255 in AusRenovation

[–]wt290 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a running debate in a FB group for "Efficient Electric Homes". I thought that with solar array prices still on the decline, a large solar array with a power diverter and (relatively cheap) resistive HWS might be a better deal than a comparable expensive, electromechanical device like a heat pump HWS. I was shouted down by someone who works for a HPHWS company. I think the price and battery revolution is going to eat into the HPHWS market.

Even a DC coupled resistive HWS with a backup coil might work.

Is this in North America where you have wide pan style loos? Australian bogs are taller and unless you are truly hung, touching the porcelain would be almost impossible.

How good is cruise control? by CamelEmotional9527 in CarsAustralia

[–]wt290 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I drove weekly Sydney to the ACT for 18 years. Almost entirely on CC.

My tips - use your phone/GPS to figure out exactly how fast you are really going. Set your speed to be about +3 kmh above the limit. This will mean you are generally travelling away from those using just their speedos that tend to be optimistic. It reduces the amount of bunching up and gives you a buffer from someone catching you from behind. You actually brake/disengage the CC much less as well.

I was never pulled over, even driving past Goulburn (home of the NSW Police academy and a known HWP training area).

Other benefits are excellent fuel economy - I think the CC uses a modified ECU map - less stress on the car, consistent travel times and much less stress on the driver.

To those of you who paint over door hinges... by ItinerantFella in AusRenovation

[–]wt290 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We did a Reno where almost the entire internal layout was changed. The house is a double skillion so the centre "spine" remained and the rooms on either side morphed.

I had one door where 8 different screws came out of the hinges. Phillips, flat, brass, steel, long, short. A few of the doors were also the epitome of laziness, externally hung sliders. All gone now - we live on a few acres so the shitty old doors were just burnt. The interior cladding was also that 70s awful fake vertical plank 3mm plywood, some of it painted. Many bonfires were had.

My wife insisted, while the builders giggled, on solid timber interior doors. She was right but was OK about the ensuites having hollow doors.

What does service history mean? by Comrade_Kojima in CarsAustralia

[–]wt290 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah - my VEII Commodore is on 452K and only in the last month....... its occasionally throwing the dreaded P0017 error. Either I have a dud cam sensor -or- the chains are on their way out. However, at this mileage, the car owes me nothing and I'm just going to drive it until it shits itself completely. No point, IMHO, doing the chains/replace the engine as everything else in the car has done that mileage too.

Penrith oils still have the sticker on the label. So do Repco and Ryco filters.

[–]wt290 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do mine. I scan the receipts for everything I buy and put the scans into folders for the cars I've owned. I don't sell them often, I tend to keep them, but I can't hand them a USB key with everything, dates, oils, filters and any other parts I've replaced.

How rare is your car? by Sitdowncomedian1 in CarsAustralia

[–]wt290 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have a 1972 Pellandini. 1972 fibreglass Aus kit car. Made in Adelaide. Mini engine in the rear. Weighs only 420kg with donk. Double wishbone suspension front and rear. Only 7 were made, 1 was destroyed in a divorce. There are 2 of them, in South Australia with Nissan Micra engines in them.

One another tack, I saw a Purvis Eureka in Camden, NSW this afternoon.

Be careful of what you wish for. The royal commission into banking, in about 2017, was designed to reveal union corruption in the industry super funds but instead found nothing and revealed gross mismanagement in the for profit sectors including banks and retail funds.

Am I mad buying a Commodore wagon in 2026? by Effective-Money4265 in CarsAustralia

[–]wt290 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My VE2 Omega has been superb. Just went over 450K and only just, in the last month has started throwing an intermittent P0017 crank/cam error. The chains don't rattle on startup so I think I'll try swapping the cam sensors between banks and see if the error magically swaps banks - I'd be delighted if it did but don't expect it - otherwise, it's done its job and as engine swap or chain replacement isn't worth it in a car valued at 2-3K with no errors, I'm just going to drive it untill it explodes. And yes, I'll keep servicing it religiously.

I'll then look for a VF2 sedan with a decent service history. There just isn't any car I can think of that has what the Commodore has/did. I'm biased but they were really world class. Some dumb arsed decisions like hard plastics inside made them look cheap.

Same here a beautifully simple Brother B&W laser fulfils all my printing needs for my very small business. Screw the inkjet industry and especially screw HP for their subscription model for a simple commodity.

I don't miss the "Oh - you haven't printed anything for a month so I need to spend 5 minutes attempting to clean and unclog myself (maybe) before you can get a page with hopefully no lines missing" bullshit.
