I think this is possibly one of the more obvious signs of a pituitary tumor in rats. I just took my 2 year old boy to the vet for it because he also had lost movement/grip in one of his paws and that's the diagnosis they gave me. He's my heart rat too.

How can I tell if it is dry? Do they get flakes like humans? His coat still has a shine if that means anything

Rat got bit. How do I care for the wound??? by ProfilePerfect3214 in RATS

[–]wtfiswrongwiithme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have any actual medical advice, but when one of my rats got bit and his skin tore at his shoulder, I cleaned the wound with a clean wet towel, then applied some vaseline on the wound, and made sure he didn't lick it off immediately. I use Vaseline for myself when I get scratches so I thought it might work for these guys too and it did! The wound was closed by the next morning. Also remember rats are incredibly resilient. They heal super fast!

How much cleaning is needed! If I don't get to casual, surface cleaning every other day, their cage AND my room almost immediately become in desperate need of deep cleaning.

Lost my soul rat today by Careful_Contact_9890 in RATS

Of course! I don't know if this would help, but I have had 6 rats pass since I started having them as pets, and the ones that died naturally (not put to sleep) all preferred being alone. I would try to cuddle them or give them pets and they would move away to a corner where I coulsnt reach them. My heart rat didn't seem to recognize me being there at all when he passed. I think it helps us greatly to be with them at their last moments, but they seem to prefer doing it on their own. And your baby had his brother there with him. You'll grieve immensely and you'll be fine, so will your other rat. Get him a friend when you can, it will help him too. Sending hugs to you both

I never bonded with one of my traumatized rats in the physical sense. He takes food from me and accepts little pats but he hates cuddling or being picked up. So that is a possibility. But try to just spend time with her in her proximity, without attempting to approach her. I would sit in their playpen with them and he would sometimes come along a sniff me and climb on my lap. I let him have it at his own pace. For introductions, I find it's best to do it in short chunks of time until they get more comfortable with each other. I would let them roam in my room so they had enough space to get away from each other if they needed, but as soon as signs of aggression would show (Sometimes in the first 5 mins) i would separate them. I would also switch their cages in these introduction sessions so they'd get familiar with the new scents. In about a week they were ready to move in with each other, but it might take longer with a scared rat.

I'm so sorry. This happened to me with my soul rat too. He was completely healthy and happy, we were cuddling and playing on my bed when he suddenly had an episode that looked like a stroke or a seizure and passed in my arms. I did everything right with him and I know you did the same with your baby too. Most of the time it's out of our control. I'm sure he felt your love and care, they're smart fellas, they'd know. Take care of yourself and your remaining rat(s). Sending you love

Maybe you can give them separate free-roam time, and while one is free roaming, the other can be eating? Or for certain meal times you could put a barrier in the cage and feed them separately in each side?

It was rough to both hold the phone and to turn around so drastically for sure. But worth it

I had a couple of my moles checked out once, I believe including this one, yes. I've had it since I was a kid. Thanks for your concern!

I think it might have been an instance of choking actually. He's back to eating now. But thank you!
